For over two years this 1992 Honda Prelude S has been my baby (except for my wife that is). Now we are having an actual baby. This change of family status means that my beloved Prelude has to go. It was my dream to one day sell this car at Barret Jackson to fund my retirement. Alas, that is not to be. Perhaps it could be your dream.

This particular Prelude is white with the extremely rare and coveted blue cloth interior. It has 226,000 miles and is a 5 speed manual transmission. It is the model S not the Si. This means that it has a SOHC engine and not the VTEC one.

If you didn’t stop reading at 226,000 miles, thank you. You will be glad that you pressed on.

Here’s what’s so awesome about this particular prelude.

  1. I’m the second owner. I bought it from a retired school teacher who purchased the car new. This car has always been adult driven. No teenagers have attempted doughnuts in a parking lot with this car.
  2. This car has ZERO modifications apart from the wheels. Nothing has been done to the engine, exhaust, or suspension. It’s 100% stock. No cold air intake, it has not been lowered, no headers, no nitrous. None of that stuff.
  3. It has been meticulously maintained. The previous owner did every service called for at a reputable Birmingham Honda specialist. I have continued to care for it in the same manner. Here are some of the things that have been done:
    • Timing belt, water pump, and accessory belts were replaced at 150,000 miles.
    • A/C compressor, clutch, coil, and dryer were replaced with brand new ones last month. A/C blows super cold and has a 1 year warranty.
    • Complete Tune Up (new distributor base, distributor cap, rotor button, spark plug wires (NGK), and spark plugs (NGK) - done at 218,000 miles.
    • New front brake rotors (Brembro) and brake pads (Akebono) at 205,000 miles.
    • New clutch, fly wheel, pilot and throw out bearings at 190,000 miles.
    • New radiator, upper and lower radiator hoses at 210,000 miles.
    • New light weight alloy wheels to replace steel wheels and hub caps.
    • Bridgestone Ecopia low rolling resistance tires (good amount to tread remaining). These tires have added about 3 MPG to each tank.
    • Recently flushed power steering, brake, and transmission fluids.
    • Cooling fan replaced at 188,00 miles.
    • New Interstate Battery about 1.5 years old (5 year warranty).
    • Of course all oil changes have been done regularly at 3,000 miles.

  4. It has original paint that’s in very good condition. Every three months I clean the paint with a clay bar and buff wax the car. Every night it goes into the garage (we’re weird but we use our garage for our cars). There are some scratches here and there as you would expect. I have a bottle of genuine Honda touch up paint that I use for, well, touch ups. I will include it at no extra charge!
  5. It’s a southern car. This Prelude has never seen the north with it’s salty roads. Nor has it seen the Gulf Coast with it’s salty sea air. There is no rust whatsoever.
  6. Runs great. Seriously. It has good power (it won’t snap your head back, but who needs that anyway, what with the chiropractic bills and all) and will get up and move merging into traffic.  I get 29 MPG combined city and highway driving. (I keep a log that I can give you if you want).
  7. It’s reliable. I know you’re thinking, it has 226,000 miles. How reliable can it be? I routinely drive it for 2 to 4 hours, to far flung places. It’s never left me on the side of the road. My pregnant wife will sometimes drive it from our home in Helena, to her work in Adamsville (about 45 minutes). I truly believe this car has another 100,000 miles in it. You just have to maintain it.
  8. It looks cool. I get stopped buy car people often who ask about it. People will stare at it. My wife thinks this is nuts, but it’s true. It’s a good looking car and it gets attention.
  9. The power windows, power sunroof, power side view mirrors, cruise control, wipers, and all the lights, work perfectly, even the power antenna!
  10. It’s not leaking anything. It’s not leaking oil, power steering fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, clutch fluid, or brake fluid. All the fluids are staying where they’re supposed to be. Inside the car.
  11. The interior is in great shape. The driver’s seat bolster could use a needle and thread but there are no other rips, tares, or holes. This has been a non smoker’s car all it’s existence. There’s not even a lighter. I even have the original floor mats (you’d be hard pressed to find a 2002 car with that)!
  12. No wrecks. There are some dings in the body. They are hard to see and even harder to try and photograph, but they are there. However, all of the body panels are original.
  13. The spare tire has been kept in good shape and the air pressure regularly checked. To the best of my knowledge it has never been used.
  14. I have most of the cars service history.
  15. I have the title in hand.
  16. It’s a Prelude!

I will not say that the car is perfect. Being 22 years old with 226,000 miles there are a couple of things that aren’t the same as the day it rolled off the showroom floor. Here are a few things that are wrong with the car.

  1. The fuel/temp gauge is not working. I use the trip odometer to know how much gas I have (in the car that is). You can get the one currently in the car refurbished for about $85 or you can replace it for about $175.00. That would be installing it yourself. If you pay someone else it will cost more.
  2. The stereo is original. To say that audio technology has advanced a little since this car was made would be a major understatement. So the quality isn’t good. To make matters worse, the speakers on the right side are blown. If you only listen to Paul Finebaum it will work just fine.
  3. It needs an alignment. It’s not pulling or wearing the tires unevenly. The steering wheel just isn’t straight. This is a result of a little suspension repair and I just haven’t had the time to do anything about it.
  4. The brake rotors are slightly warped. You only feel it if you’re braking hard and I wouldn’t worry about it until the pads are worn out but that will be awhile.
  5. There’s a small water leak into the trunk. Pressure washing or a hard driving rain will put some water into the trunk. Otherwise it’s fine. The amount is small. In fact, when you look at the carpet in the trunk you will notice that there are no stains.
  6. As I mentioned before, and as you can see in the pictures, the driver’s seat bolster could use some repair.
  7. Also as mentioned before the are some dings and scratches. You really can't see them from afar, and I gave up trying to make them show in the photos, but they are there.
  8. The right front alloy wheel has some road rash from a close encounter with a curb. This can be repaired if you are so inclined.
  9. The air intake hose is split. I have it wrapped with duct tape which does just fine.
  10. There is some residual from a sticker on the rear bumper and a bad spot on the rear trunk lid also from a sticker. I’ve buffed and cleaned theses the best I could but painting it would be the best solution.
You can see even more pictures on my Flickr Page

So there you have it. While I will be very sad to see this car go, your generous bid will ease my suffering  and make you all the happier for it!

Race Recap: 2013 Indianapolis 500 better than Bollywood; all the emotion, none of the music [spoilers]

Mon, 27 May 2013

If the 2013 Indy 500 were a movie it would be the one expected to win all the little statues come awards season, and if it were an athlete it would have made spectators watch in awe as it broke record after record. And this kind of talk comes after last year's race was considered one of the best ever - the last lap hijinks in 2012 and Takuma Sato's crash leading to a podium ceremony straight out of a Golden Globes tearjerker.
But this year's race delivered more than anyone expected, from the 250,000 fans to the commentators to the IndyCar series itself and, finally, to the guy who hopped through a two-mile window on Lap 197 to take the lead and keep it until the end.

Honda CEO says we shouldn't expect any new sports cars

Tue, 19 Nov 2013

It wasn't so long ago that Honda was known for its sporty two-door models, with models ranging from the Civic del Sol to the Prelude and from the Acura Integra and RSX to the Honda S2000. But look at its range today and all you'll see are the Civic and Accord coupes. Honda has essentially let competitors like the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ and Nissan 370Z take the place it once claimed as its own. But if you were hoping Honda would fight back with a new coupe or convertible of its own, we're afraid you're going to have to downgrade those hopes to pipe dreams.
While in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show, Autoblog had a chance to sit down with American Honda CEO Tetsuo Iwamura (pictured at right). When we asked about the potential for a new sports coupe or convertible in the Honda or Acura lineup, he pointed to the current Civic and Accord coupes - not to mention the upcoming new NSX - but said that Honda has no replacement for any of the aforementioned models (or a rival for the FR-S or 370Z) in the pipeline, saying only that the company is monitoring potential demand.
What Iwamura-san did note was that he's a personal fan of the new S660 roadster (pictured above) set to be unveiled tomorrow, and he is pushing (or at least hoping) that it will come to North America. Given that he's head of both Honda's American office and its global automobile operations, one might think that the only person he would have to persuade is himself (well... himself, and potential buyers), but the sporty droptop looks to be about kei-sized, which sadly suggests that it may be too small for American tastes and perhaps not designed with US crash-test standards in mind anyway.

Honda, Mercedes top KBB brand image awards [w/video]

Wed, 09 Apr 2014

Kelley Blue Book has announced the winners of its 2014 Brand Image Awards, which look at brands with "attributes that capture the attention and enthusiasm" of customers in the market for a new car.
The award is divided up into luxury brands and everyone else non-luxury brands, with a number of sub-awards in each group. There's also a single award for truck brands. Taking the crown for the best everyman brand (for the second year in a row) is Honda, while Mercedes-Benz was the king of the luxury brackets. Ford, meanwhile, had the best image among pickup buyers.
Honda was also named the most trusted brand among shoppers, while Kia, GMC, Mini and Chevrolet also snagged awards for value, refinement, performance and styling, respectively. Secondary winners in the luxury ranks include Lexus, Buick, Porsche and Jaguar. Mercedes was also named the most refined luxury brand.
