Japan considering offering free hydrogen cars because $30k incentives apparently not enough
Wed, Aug 6 2014There's no such thing as a free lunch. A free hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, though? It may become a possibility in Japan, says Automotive News. We know the Japanese government is being plenty supportive of hydrogen vehicles since it will provide about $20,000 worth of incentives to prospective customers of the $69,000 vehicle. And with local governments like Toyota City's Aichi prefecture supplying another $10,000, out of pocket costs could reach less than $40,000 for the Toyota hydrogen car. We don't know for sure that the 'free' H2 car will happen, but with Toyota starting sales of its first production FCV next spring (potentially named Mirai), it could happen. That would also spell good news for Honda, which will follow up Toyota's effort for its own hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. The case for the free car is still pretty tenuous. Automotive News, citing the Nihon Keizai business publication, reports that the Japanese government has thrown around the idea of subsidizing the vehicles outright to early adopters just to gain some momentum for this kind of zero-emissions vehicles. Heck, the government would even throw in free fuel for good measure. We'll see about that. Honda Gear concept explored at Montreal Auto Show
Fri, 18 Jan 2013Our friends at Autoblog Canada have just come away with a closer look at Honda's surprise Gear Concept at the Montreal Auto Show. The little three-door hatchback is arguably the automaker's first real shot at the North American city car market (the Gear is much smaller than the Fit) and may be an indication that Honda is getting serious about going after Scion on this side of the world after the CR-Z hybrid failed to deliver. Honda says the Gear Concept takes its inspiration from the fixed-gear bicycle scene, and should allow buyers an unprecedented level of customization. Designers also wanted to show that a car can be both fun and practical.
We're all for a compact stylish three door with functional room inside, but given Honda's propensity for draining the personality from its concepts on the way to production (at least the ones that don't look showroom ready), we don't hold much hope for the Gear. All Honda Accord Hybrid production moving to Japan
Fri, Apr 10 2015The Honda Accord Hybrid will no longer be made in Marysville, OH. Honda has announced that the model – as well as the Accord Plug-In – will now be made in Sayama, Japan, where both have been built since 2013. With production moving so far away from the US market, the costs for these vehicles could increase, but there's no official word on that from Honda. Angie Nucci, spokesperson for Honda North America, did not discount the idea but just told AutoblogGreen that, "We don't have details on pricing to share at this point." Sales of the green-minded Accords are down so far this year. Through the end of March, the PHEV sold just 45 units, a 35-percent drop from the 69 sold in the first three months of 2014. Things weren't as bad for the non-plug Accord Hybrid, which has sold 2,585 units so far this year compared to 2,781 last year, a seven-percent drop.
