The CR-V's 2.4-liter four-cylinder provides adequate oomph thanks in part to a responsive five-speed automatic transmission that picks the right gear and hangs on during a smooth revving process. The drivetrain makes 185 horsepower and 163 pounds-feet of torque, and that proved enough to motivate our all-wheel-drive tester even with four adults aboard. Credit the SUV's spry curb weight; it's anywhere from 65 to 472 pounds lighter than comparable base and well-equipped versions of the Toyota RAV4, Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape.

Steering is drama-free, with natural feedback and settled highway composure. The wheel directs the SUV through curves just enough, but on winding roads the CR-V feels less athletic than the Mazda CX-5 and Ford Escape. Throw it around, and the Honda's pitchy body roll exposes a limited fun factor.

Ride quality, which was a nagging issue in the prior-gen CR-V, now impresses. For this class, the CR-V isolates well on the highway and clomps through ruts and manholes with little disruption. It's not a particularly quiet experience, though. My test vehicle's tires — Bridgestone Dueler Sport P225/65R17 all-seasons — filtered little road noise. Similarly, the cabin did little to quell wind noise, which was pervasive throughout my time in the CR-V.

With front-wheel drive, EPA-estimated mileage is 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined. All-wheel drive loses 1 mpg across the board. The combined EPA figures are competitive in the field, and I averaged 28.1 mpg over some 610 mostly highway miles in my all-wheel-drive tester. That's decent, considering that mileage included hauling as many as four occupants and considerable time idling. Read more about my observed mileage here.

A driver-selectable Econ mode relaxes drivetrain response, cruise control and air conditioning to improve gas mileage. It introduces some sluggishness to the automatic's downshift response, but it didn't bog down much else.

Ever wonder how to really pronounce Japanese automaker names?

People tend to get very set in their ways when it comes to the pronunciation of words. Just look at the endless debates over whether or not to say the final 'e' in Porsche (which you should in terms of correct German enunciation). Or the argument about whether to follow the British convention and give the 'u' in Jaguar a special delivery or to say the 'ua' diphthong as more of a 'w' sound, as usually happens in the US.
This short video doesn't answer either of those automotive questions, but it does allow a native Japanese speaker to demonstrate the accepted pronunciations for several, major automakers from the country. One benefit is that it clears up the occasional debate over whether Nissan should be said with a long or short 'i' sound. Also, listen closely to how the female host says Mazda as Matsuda, the way it's actually said in the language. Even if this doesn't change the way you enunciate these brands, at least now you know the accurate way in Japanese.

Honda trademarks ZSX, could be for baby NSX

While there have been many rumors dating back to 2008 about a mid-engined sports car from Honda, last year's report was provided the most detail about what seemed to be a scaled-down version of the NSX hybrid supercar. Honda may have added some fuel to the rumor-fire by recently filing a trademark application for "ZSX," reports Australia's Performance Drive. The trademark application was sent to the European Union Intellectual Property Office late last month and is obviously close to the NSX nomenclature. The Australian outlet also reports that an unnamed source within Honda claims the ZSX, whatever it may be, could be revealed as early as next year. The anonymous employee also claims that the ZSX will be offered as a coupe and a hard-top convertible variant, with both being powered by the automaker's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Honda Civic Type R. Just like the NSX, the ZSX is rumored to get electric motors on the front and rear axles. Previous reports match the unnamed source's claims, as the ZSX was expected to be a replacement for the Honda S2000 that ended production in 2009. It now sounds like it'll be more of a mini-NSX, with rumors pointing towards one electric motor powering the rear wheels, while two motors would be on the front axle. Patents from last year, which are pictured above, match the rumors of a mid-engined sports car. The ZSX trademark is for Europe only as of right now, while the automaker's previous patents and trademarks included the US, as well. Only time will tell if "ZSX" really stands for a sports car, or if Honda actually goes through with its plans. Remember, Nissan ditched similar plans for a small rear-wheel-drive sports car recently. Honda marks 20 million vehicles made in the USA

Japanese automakers manufacturing in the United States is nothing new. But it was in November of 1982 when the first Honda Accord rolled off the assembly line in Marysville, OH. It was the first Japanese vehicle assembled in the US, and in the nearly 32 years since, Honda has made 10 million Accords here for a total of 20 million cars manufactured in America - enough to span from New York to San Francisco twenty times. It's that double landmark which Honda is now celebrating.
Honda has come a long way in those three decades, keeping that original plant in Marysville on line while expanding to three more - in East Liberty, OH; Lincoln, AL; and Greensburg, IN - with a fifth plant (the Performance Manufacturing Center) opening on the same site in Marysville to build the Acura NSX next year. It also builds engines in Lincoln and in Anna, OH, and automatic transmissions at Russells Point, OH, and Tallapoosa, GA.
Between those seven sites, Honda produces 11 different models, including the Accord, Civic, Crosstour, CR-V, Pilot, Odyssey and Ridgeline as well as the Acura ILX, TL, RDX and MDX. Production keeps on ramping up as Honda produced a record 1.3 million vehicles in the US last year, 95 percent of which are sold in the US.
