Please allow time for all 86 photos to load and inspect and be sure to click on this link for a photo slideshow: http://s746.photobucket.com/user/cars2k/slideshow/1988%20Honda%20Accord Well worth a look because exceptional automobiles such as this rarely come along.
Often referred to as the greatest car ever, for over 30 years the Honda Accord remains among the best-selling cars in the United States. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles and has been on the Car and Driver 10 Best list over 26 times.
Consumer Guide in 1989 termed the third-generation Accord, "The class of the compact class...an outstanding all-around buy among family cars. Attractions include decent room for four, adequate cargo space, a comfortable driving position, superb outward vision, exemplary workmanship and good fuel economy…we rate the LX as the best Accord buy on a value-per-dollar basis.”
With the attrition rate of these cars often accelerated by juvenile, second hand owners and highway commuters, it'd be a nice surprise to find an un-molested, low-mile example of the species that, despite being 26 years-old, still sparkles, shines and runs like a late model.
The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild, dry climate and large number affluent, automobile owners. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well preserved example presented for auction here!
This third generation Accord LX-i is the top-of-the line model and has a sleek 1980’s design with iconic, flip-up headlights. The car is very roomy inside, extremely, versatile, economical and reliable with a 21-28 MPG EPA fuel economy rating on regular gasoline. The powerful, 2-liter electronic fuel-injected engine with 4-speed automatic transmission are a bulletproof combination that will easily go 250,000 miles when properly maintained.
Having been loved and cherished by a mature couple (now in their 80’s) in Southern CA since new, this Honda has certainly led a charmed life. Last year, the car was passed-down (and re-titled) to their grandson but –as it turned out- he will not be getting his driver’s license in the near future so the decision was made to sell. So here it is, listed for the first time on eBay Motors with no reserve price! Let’s take a closer look now. Exterior:
This wonderful Accord LX-i is as nice and as original as it gets.
Having only received one repaint in 2008, it never suffered from neglect, collision or corrosion damage and is as virginally preserved as one could hope for.
You won’t find many cars of this age in such outstanding condition.
There are a couple small cracks in the windshield,
but they are not in areas where the vision is impaired (see above photos viewed from outside and inside the car in the driver's seat).
Here is a small ding on the roof.
Look closely at the pictures and you’ll see the buttery finish is not perfect. There are a few other minor door dings, blems, chips, and scratches but overall, the body and paint have held up remarkably well.
The license tags were just paid-up through February 2015 and a fresh Smog Certificate will be provided for the new owner.
Some minor cracks in the finish of the right-rear tail light lens can be seen below.
Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork with perfect hood, hatch and door gaps, it’s obvious the car was never in a collision.
Newer radial tires still have nearly 100% tread life and amazing detail.
Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how shiny the paint - reflecting true pride of ownership.
If you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 6-year old, not a 26 year old car. This one is that clean! Let’s have a look inside.
Interior:
Open the doors and you will find the original burgundy NON-SMOKER interior shows very minor wear and fading but - for its age - is in incredible condition!
The velour bucket seats still feel like they’ve never been sat-in.
The rear seats, carpets, door panels and headliner are immaculate.
With the exception of one small chip (see the white area near the right of the clock) the dashboard has no cracks or warping.
With the exception of the cruise control, (possibly a fuse) all power features, switches and instruments work perfectly.
Even the grain on the steering wheel is pristine.
The 140,773 miles shown on the 6-digit odometer are all meticulously maintained and original!
The original AM/FM/Cassette unit works (a little scratchy when adjusting the volume) and the air-conditioning still blows ice cold.
Power windows open and close smoothly.
4-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly in all gears. Very little wear on the pedals and carpet.
As you can see in the detailed photos, no panel cuts or modifications were ever made - leaving this interior 100% original.
Some flaws here and there; in the above photos, although touched-up, the vinyl has sun damage in a small area along the top of the passenger-side door panel. The same area on the driver's side door panel still looks good.
Original owners books and an offical 1988 Honda Accord Service Manual are all included.
3 keys are included.
When the rear hatch is lifted, fresh struts hold it nicely in place, providing ample access to the spacious cargo area.
When the seats fold down, cargo space nearly doubles!
Below the carpet resides the full sized spare.
Jack and lug wrench are behind the panel on the right.
Everything in this non-smoker interior looks, smells and operates like the car was pampered its entire life. Let’s have a peak under the hood.
Engine & Mechanical:
The immaculate engine compartment is 100% original.
Featuring the legendary 2-liter electronic fuel-injected engine, it is known for its reliability and longevity. It starts quickly, idles very smoothly with no smoke or unusual noises. The engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission which brings this Accord to perfection.
Minor seepage is evident below the engine but there are no excessive drips and it doesn’t burn any oil. New battery can be seen in the below photo.
The owner is a retired engineer who meticulously maintained this car. He kept a full maintenance log that can be seen in the detailed slideshow, which includes religious oil and fluid changes (many performed himself) as well as the major services including timing belt replacement and all important transmission flushes that were completed at the recommended intervals.
As a result, this low-mile Accord is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any Honda can be very tough and reliable with a bit of preventative maintenance! Drivability:
The powerful 2-liter, fuel-injected engine and 4-speed automatic transmission, provide a pleasant blend of comfort and agility. In any climate, the engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror or drips in your driveway. Warmed up, the coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs in rush hour traffic. The transmission shifts smoothly in all gears, power steering is precise and the new disk brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading.
Aided with nearly-new radial tires, handling and braking are superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Accord LX-i is a joy to drive. Despite its age, the car is perfectly reliable and ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live.
Finally, with an original MSRP of over $13,000, the 1988 Honda Accord LX-i has reached the bottom-end of the depreciation curve; a perfect time to buy.
Well, here’s one that not only survived the ravages of time but is up to any task imaginable. To state it succinctly: This Accord delivers on its promise!
There's but one stumbling block on the way to Honda Heaven: Immaculate, meticulously maintained, low mile examples have become increasingly hard to find.
All the more reason to watch this one closely;
Presently, we have a clear, California Title and a Smog Certificate which will be provided to the new owner for transfer. CA license and registration fees have just been paid through February, 2015. Six 'shut up and take my money' cars
Tue, 11 Nov 2014Any time you see this iconic moment in pop culture - Shut up and take my money! - posted in response to a new car reveal, rumor for an upcoming model or even lip-service to a vehicle that should exist, you can bet there's some intrinsic good in the idea. Though depending on the person offering up the cash, that good could take the form of extraordinary form, functionality, weight savings, power, handling, etc. You get the idea.
In fact, when I first proposed this list, I reached out to the Autoblog staff to help me brainstorm. Here are some of the ideas they offered up that I ultimately didn't use: Jaguar XE Coupe, Pagani Huayra Roadster, Mercedes-Benz S-Class "parade car" (cabriolet), Morgan 3-Wheeler with Ducati V-twin, Ford Transit Connectamino (pickup), Mercedes CLA63 AMG, Ford Fusion 5.0, BMW i8 Spyder, Lexus RC-F Shooting Brake, Volvo XC90 Polestar. Oh, and things we collectively wanted to stick Dodge's Hellcat in were almost as numerous as models that Fiat Chrysler Automotive currently makes (though none quite so compelling as the Grand Cherokee you see above.)
Ultimately though, while I used a couple of ideas from my colleagues, the list of cars I'd shell out for unquestionably is very personal. Though it isn't complete, what follows is a selection of cars whose very existence would prompt me - or the trust-fund-baby versions of me - to utter without hesitation: "Shut up and take my money."
Reveling in the reveals: BRZ, Civic, Wrangler, QX55
Thu, Nov 19 2020It’s almost like there should have been an auto show this week. If youÂ’re an enthusiast, you know the week before Thanksgiving is when the Los Angeles Auto Show kicks off. This year, thereÂ’s no L.A. show, at least until next May. But Subaru, Honda, Jeep and Infiniti rolled out significant new products this week, making us almost nostalgic for auto shows. Serendipity, or more likely previously allocated marketing budgets, gave us a familiar feel of new products, even though we couldnÂ’t feel or touch them under the bright lights of the Los Angeles Convention Center. LetÂ’s break them down: 2022 Subaru BRZ 2022 Subaru BRZ View 62 Photos Subaru stuck to basic formula here: The 2022 BRZ remains a rear-wheel drive sports coupe thatÂ’s supremely lightweight, adequately powered and attractive. Subaru debuts its new boxer four-cylinder in the BRZ. ItÂ’s rated at 223 hp and you need to rev all the way to 7,000 rpm to achieve that output. I'd prefer a bit more than the 184 lb-ft of torque the powerplant offers (reasonably low in the band at 3,700 rpm), for some more off-the-line grunt. Say 200 lb-ft, though itÂ’s almost a cliche to argue the BRZ is underpowered. The outgoing BRZ is one of the purest cars IÂ’ve driven, so rather than harp on the power, which will ultimately be fine, give Subaru props for focusing on chassis improvements to improve rigidity by 60 percent and aid turn-in. Admirably, the curb weight is less than 2,900 pounds, and the manual in Premium trim checks in at the lowest, just 2,815 pounds. Aesthetically, I like it. ItÂ’s busier than before, and thereÂ’s a lot more going on with the front fascia, wheel arches and fenders. ThereÂ’s a bit of a Porsche vibe up front, which is good, and a bit of a Honda Civic vibe in back (think 2010) thatÂ’s not. ItÂ’s impressive that Subaru resisted the urge to gratuitously power up the BRZ and remained focused on the essence of its goodness and appeal to enthusiasts. 2021 Jeep Wrangler 392 2021 Jeep? Wrangler Rubicon 392 View 75 Photos What effect will the 2021 Ford Bronco have on the Jeep Wrangler? One school of thought is that it will actually make the Jeep better, and the 2021 Wrangler 392 is proof positive that will be the case. With the Bronco attracting spectacular levels of attention, Jeep could not sit idly by and remain focused on incremental changes. It needed to make a splash.
Why Toyota's fuel cell play is one big green gamble
Mon, Feb 3 2014Imagine going to the ballet on Saturday evening for an 8 pm performance. The orchestra begins warming up shortly before the show, but it turns out the star performer isn't ready at the appointed time. The orchestra keeps playing, doing its best to keep the audience engaged and, most importantly, in the building. It keeps this up until the star finally shows and is ready to dance ... which turns out to be ten years later. That's a Samuel Beckett play. It's also how many observers, analysts, alt-fuel fans and alt-fuel intenders feel about the arrival of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) – the few of them who are still in the building, that is. Toyota's hydrogen development timeline rivals that of the US space program. In fact, within the halls of Toyota alone, research on FCVs has been going on for nearly 22 years, meaning that one company's development timeline for FCVs rivals that of the US space program – it was 1945 when Werner von Braun's team began re-assembling Germany's World War II V2 rockets and figuring out how to launch them into space and it wasn't until 1969 when a man set landing gear down on that sunlit lunar quarry. The development of the atom bomb only took half as long, and that's if we go all the way back to when Leo Szilard patented the mere idea of it, in 1934. Carmakers didn't give up on hydrogen in spite of the public having given up on carmakers ever making something of it, so there was a good chance that hydrogen criers announcing the mass-market adoption of periodic chart element number two one would eventually be right. Now is that time. And Toyota, not alone in researching FCVs but arguably having done the most to keep FCVs in the news, isn't even going to be first to market. That honor will go to Hyundai, surprising just about everyone at the LA Auto Show with news of a hydrogen fuel cell Tucson going on sale in the spring. The other bit of thunder stolen: while Toyota's talking about trying to get the price of its offering down to something between $50,000 and $100,000, Hyundai is pitching its date with the future at a lease price of $499 per month ($250 more than the lease price of a conventional Tucson), free hydrogen and maintenance, and availability at Enterprise Rent-A-Car if you just want to try it out. We've seen and driven Toyota's offering and we all know its success doesn't depend on cross-shopping, showroom dealing and lease sweeteners.
