Model Overview
The 2009 Honda Pilot has bulked up thanks to its new styling, adding over an inch to its height and width and nearly 3 inches to its length. That additional length is noticed and appreciated with wider front and rear doors, allowing for easier access for all passengers. Honda coupled these cosmetic improvements with several significant mechanical upgrades to further distinguish the 2009 model from previous years. All styles may still have the same 3.5 liter V6 from previous years, but these engines are not the same. For 2009, Honda increases the Pilot's engine output to an even 250 horsepower. The 2-wheel drive Pilot provides drivers with 2500 lbs. of towing capability while the 4-wheel version nearly doubles that to 4500 lbs.Safety was not overlooked in the Pilot's redesign. Honda claims that frame now contains more high-strength steel than any other Honda vehicle. The new frame and standard front and 3-row side curtain airbags may have played a role in the safety accolades that the new Pilot has garnered. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Pilot its "Top Safety Pick" and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Pilot its highest safety rating of 5 stars for both frontal & side impact collisions. The entry level LX style is only available with standard factory equipment. However, this standard equipment list is a lengthy one, including front and rear power disc brakes, remote entry, power windows and locks, hidden storage well in the cargo area and lift-up glass hatch on the tailgate, a new item that is standard on the LX and the EX.The mid-level EX adds available power front seats with heated leather trim. Also, drivers will enjoy the addition of an improved power moonroof that is 26% larger than previous years with a diffuser to minimize exterior noise while moonroof is open. The EX also is available with a selection of upgraded stereos as well as a rear seat entertainment system, which includes a DVD player complemented with a 512-watt 10-speaker stereo. To further appease rear passengers, the EX also provides a tri-zone climate control system with humidity control and air-filtration.The top end Touring styles provide a level of customization that should keep most drivers happy, and adds equipment that is unique to this class. Front seat memory as well as heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals are both standard. Also, the liftgate is improved to a power liftgate that can be opened at the touch of a button. Most appealing, however, might be the addition of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Bluetooth connectivity and integrated rearview camera, exclusive to the Pilot Touring class.

Thieves still love older Hondas and pickups most, says NICB [w/video]

Wed, 20 Aug 2014

No one wants to have their car stolen, but a new study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau has some bad news for older Honda owners and pickup drivers. Fortunately, it has better news for drivers overall. The group is reporting that according to preliminary data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, thefts were down 3.2 percent in 2013 (versus 2012) to fewer than 700,000 cars. That's the lowest figure since 1967. That's also less than half of the peak of over 1.66 million thefts in 1991. "The drop in thefts is good news for all of us," says NICB President and CEO Joe Wehrle. "But it still amounts to a vehicle being stolen every 45 seconds and losses of over $4 billion a year."
Honda drivers might not find it such good news with older Accord and Civic models topping this year's theft study. Toyota and Dodge can't really celebrate, either, with two models each on the list, as well. Overall, this year's list was split evenly between foreign and domestic models, which were mostly pickups.
The 10 most likely vehicles to be stolen in 2013 were:

Honda motorcycles most stolen, just like Honda autos

Tue, 26 Nov 2013

It comes as no surprise that Honda's Civic and Accord are the most stolen cars in America, but as it turns out, thieves like the company's motorcycles the most too, according to a study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Out of the 46,061 two-wheelers stolen in 2012, 9,082 of them were Hondas. While that's bad news for Honda motorcycle owners, at least motorcycle theft went down slightly from 2011, which had 46,667 reported thefts. Motorcycle theft recoveries, on the other hand, were just 39 percent.
Yamaha is up next in the theft rankings (7,517), then Suzuki (7,017). The numbers drop a bit for fourth and fifth place, Kawasaki (4,839) and Harley-Davidson (3,755). These five brands are far and away the most stolen motorcycles: sixth place, apparently held by scooter, dirtbike and ATV maker Taotao, dropped to 914 theft reports.
California had the most reported thefts (6,082), followed by Florida (4,110), Texas (3,400), North Carolina (2,574) and Indiana (2,334). By city, New York City had the most reported thefts (903), followed by Las Vegas (757), San Diego (633), Indianapolis (584) and Miami (535.

Honda gunning for world's longest Rose Parade float

Thu, 26 Dec 2013

Honda has participated in the annual Rose Parade for the past 53 years and returns this year as the presenting sponsor for the fourth time running. But it's not satisfied merely putting its name on the event; Honda intends to lead from the front with what promises to be the longest float in the parade's long history.
The float, previewed in the rendering above, will measure 274 feet long, as tall as 30 feet high, as wide as 18 feet and weighing a whopping 50 tons with 8,980 flowers covering its surface. The train will be led by a locomotive designed to mimic the Acura NSX, with Asimo at the wheel. The second car in the train showcases a Honda engine, followed by a robotic arm, and, for the first time in the parade's history, a pair of 30-foot LED monitors displaying images of spectators lining the parade route. A caboose inspired by the Honda Jet will pick up the rear.
Oh, and in case you're wondering just who Honda will be knocking off the record books with its 274-foot train of roses, that would be... also Honda. The Japanese company set the record in 2005 with a 207-foot float. Scope out the details in the press release below and click the image above to view in high resolution.
