For Sale:  1998 Honda Passport 4WD, Mechanic’s Special.

NOTE:  This car requires repairs to the frame; and should not be driven until the frame has been repaired.  It is also a good source of parts.

This car has been lovingly restored to the best condition possible, and was a daily driver.  It has 164,000 original miles, and handles well, considering the condition of the frame.
The following are the problems with the car that I know about:
  1. Rear wiper does not work
  2. Rear washer does not work
  3. Tailgate is dented (probably the reason for numbers 1 and 2)
  4. Transmission leaks (but it seems to operate normally)
In addition, the car was serviced by the local Honda Dealer last week.  All of the outstanding recalls were fixed to Honda standards; but I was advised by the dealer that they noticed excessive rot on the left rear area of the frame.  The following frame items are either missing or compromised:
  1. Left rear upper shock absorber mount
  2. Left rear gas tank support
  3. Left upper coil spring retainer
I would estimate that the value of the recall service to be at least $800.  The following were replaced:  alternator, negative battery cable, accelerator pedal pad, and the ABS control module.  The body appears to be solid and complete; and the doors and windows operate as expected.

A local body shop gave me an estimate of $1000 to have the frame repaired; but I have decided to sell the vehicle instead to someone who can give the car a good home, and may have the skills and equipment necessary to repair the vehicle.

Everything else on the car works as it should, including all of the four-wheel drive modes, heater, A/C, and cruise control.  The car easily passed a recent emission test, and has a clean title.  The stereo mounting bracket is complete; however, no stereo is currently installed.  I did have a stereo installed for a while, and all of the speakers seemed to work.

Carfax report available upon request.  I can also provide pictures of the rotted area of the frame if desired.

Kelly Blue Book Private Party Value:  $2760 (for this vehicle in good condition, presumably with a frame in good condition).

Honda Civic Tourer to debut at Frankfurt

Wed, 07 Aug 2013

Honda will be bringing its new Civic Tourer to next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, just as we predicted in our spy shots of the new MPV from back in April. The new model, which will arrive in European dealers in 2014, will be built alongside Honda's Euro-spec Civic hatchback, Jazz (Honda Fit) and CR-V in Swindon, Wiltshire, UK.
Honda first hinted at the Civic Tourer with a concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, which is set to do battle with the Toyota Auris and Volkswagen Golf in the European market. The production Civic Tourer will also be shown alongside a refreshed Civic hatchback, yet another NSX Concept variant, a McLaren MP4/4 Formula One car, and Honda's World Touring Car Championship Civic.

Honda thumbs nose at fleet sales, claims it leads in key vehicle segments

Tue, 30 Jul 2013

Fleet sales are a way of life in the automotive industry. There are many non-retail customers that need vehicles, but going too far can reduce brand image and vehicle resale value. While some of its competitors have fleet sale that account for up to 20 or 30 of overall sales, Honda is bragging that it has the lowest fleet sales of all mainstream automakers for the first five months of 2013.
After calculating new-car registration data from R.L. Polk, Honda says that just two percent of its sales through went to fleet customers compared to an industry average of 19 percent. Even though this means Honda leaves plenty of sales on the table each month, it also claims to have the highest resale value and lowest cost of ownership among its competitors. In terms of retail sales, Honda says that the Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey all lead their respective segments, and it breaks down/brags about its retail sales success in the press release, which is posted below.

Honda slowing US production due to ports dispute

Thu, Feb 19 2015

The labor dispute that idled 29 ports on the West Coast last the weekend, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, CA, is about to make its effects felt on the showroom floor, according to Reuters. Honda, Toyota and Subaru have been trying to work around the labor disagreement, cutting overtime and airlifting parts to factories, but Honda says parts shortages at plants in Indiana, Ohio and Ontario, Canada, are now severe enough to impede production. The lack of transmissions and some electronic components will slow output of the Honda Accord, Civic, and CR-V – as well as unnamed Acuras. The three affected factories will rework their production schedules from Feb. 16-23. The ports have reopened this week, and US Labor Secretary Tom Perez has flown to San Francisco to mediate a new agreement between the 20,000 dockworkers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents the terminals and shipping companies. Talks have been going on for almost nine months and the issues aren't settled; meanwhile, the West Coast ports that handle half the nation's maritime cargo and 70 percent of cargo from Asia are putting all kinds of industries on the ropes, and it's estimated to cost the economy $2 billion a day.
