When we bought the Fit, we really thought it was the perfect retirement vehicle, one we would have for many years with incredible interior space and it was ridiculously economical.  It proved to be both of those things and we will miss it.  However, we need a small pickup and keeping three cars is just not in our economic program.

The Fit is blast to drive.  It’s deceptive.  It looks smaller than it really is and I frequently saw it well utilized in India (where it’s called the Jazz,) and was amazed how people made use of the space.  With the back seats down it’s almost a station wagon and I couldn’t think of a better car for us, (we occasionally exploit a paper towel sale at Target and swing by for three cases of tomato paste from Costco - this is what “mature” people do.)

We have driven it to Las Vegas a couple of times and to the coast three or four times.  It’s nice to stop, put $30 worth of gas in it and it’s full.  It’s got plenty of pep for a small car but it’s not going to require chiropractic neck adjustments by any stretch.

The air conditioning is very, very strong.  We found this very comforting during hot flashes both biological and environmental.  The seats are wonderful and it’s quiet for a small car; it doesn’t have that rattle and road noise issue of so many smaller vehicles.  It’s got just the right set of features that make it the perfect everyday car.  Andy, one of my friends who is a Mercedes nut, always gets in it and says, “This car is amazing; does anyone really ever need more car than this?”  Probably not.

I am taller, and this car has more headroom than any other car other than my old F250.  You have to see it to believe it.  It’s truly the universal car.

There are things I don’t like about the car too.  It doesn’t support Bluetooth, which means it won’t sync to your iPhone/Android and let you answer the phone.  That came with the Honda navigation package but it was so overpriced I couldn’t fathom spending the money.  You can play your iPhone-iPod/Android using the USB cable but I never bothered.   I miss the memory seats from the BMW.  My wife is smaller, I am taller, that’s a nice feature to push a button before I get in the car to move the seat back.  The Fit was $18,800 new, how can I complain?

It would be really nice to see someone buy it who will enjoy it as much as we do.  It’s a great car.  Maybe it’s a great “go to college car.”  Our first cars were a Vega and a Pinto (also known as “the BBQ with tires.”)  This car is like a BMW in comparison.  Safer, tons of airbags, great mileage and yet still small enough it’s easy to park.  We’ll see.

Happy to deliver it after payment anywhere in Arizona or California south of the Bay Area for $250.

Q&A

Q) Have you smoked in it?

A) No, we don’t smoke.  I don’t think it even has an ashtray.

Q) Any accidents?

A) Nope.  Not since I started wearing Depends.  (Just kidding, no accidents.)

Q) Any warranty left?

A) Up to 36,000 or April 2016, whichever comes first.

Q) Dings in the wheels?

A) Not a one.  I drop the Mrs. off in low arching dives towards the curbs, never get that close, tell her to “tuck and roll.”  She’s a quick learner.

Q) Dings in the doors or body?
A) Nope.

Q) Serviced at the dealer?

A) Yes.  Just changed the oil again.  It’s at 100%.

Q) What kind of mileage did you get?

A) I averaged a little over 30.  On the freeway, almost 34.  In town, closer to 29.  I have a very light foot, I am really good with mileage.

Q) Would you buy another one?

A) In a heartbeat if I didn’t need to put things in the truck I would never put inside a car.

Q) Do you need any help selling it?

A) No, do you need any help importing the Do Not Call List into your auto-dialer?

Toyota, Mazda drop Takata as Mitsubishi, Subaru weigh options

Sat, Nov 7 2015

It's not a very good time to be Takata right now. Fresh on the heels of longtime partner Honda ditching them, Toyota and Mazda have both come out and said they will not use the company's airbag inflators if they continue to rely on ammonium nitrate. Bloomberg reports that Subaru and Mitsubishi are also contemplating a divorce. "The inflator using ammonium nitrate produced by Takata will not be adopted by Toyota," President Akio Toyoda said during a briefing today. "What's most important above anything else is the safety and peace of mind of customers." Mazda echoed that position, simply saying it "will not use Takata airbag inflators which contain ammonium nitrate in our new cars." When you lose three huge OEM accounts in as many days, it's certainly going to have a deleterious effect on your fortunes. In Takata's case, that's meant a staggering 39-percent drop in their share price over the last three days. Yesterday alone, the company saw a 6.2-percent fall, Bloomberg reports. As the business publication reports, though, Takata isn't going down without a fight. The company is "considering some plans to survive," including a fundraising plan that will see it potentially offer up additional shares for sale. Still, at least one analyst doesn't see whatever company survives staying involved in the airbag inflator business. "I really don't see how they're going to be able to survive as an inflator manufacturer," Valient Market Research founder Scott Upham told Bloomberg. "When your major clients publicly come out and say that they're not going to use your products anymore, it makes this very difficult to sustain your business." Bonkers Honda Vezel headlines Mugen's lineup at Tokyo Auto Salon

Tue, 14 Jan 2014

Japanese automakers and their tuning divisions have descended upon the Makuhari Messe in Chiba City for the 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon. And for Honda, it's all about Mugen.
Honda's Japanese Domestic Market tuning division brought a series of modified concepts and racing cars to the salon this year, including the CR-Z hybrid touring car it fields in the Super GT series, the SF13 single-seater from the Super Formula series as well as customized versions of the Fit, Odyssey and N-WGN. But the prize for the most outrageous of them all surely goes to the modified Vezel you see above.
Modeled on Honda's new Fit-based crossover, the Mugen Vezel Concept goes further than the versions we've seen until now. It features a bonkers body kit, dual exhaust, brake upgrade, sport suspension, intricate 20-inch alloy wheels and an upgraded interior. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're feeling still interested, you can check it out in the gallery above, along with the announcement below and the specs on Mugen's website.

Honda installs 3-minute, fast-fuelling hydrogen fuel station in California

Fri, Mar 7 2014

OK, but let's see how well Honda can control hydrogen refueling temperature in Houston or Buffalo. That's what some pessimists may be saying now that the Japanese automaker has installed a fast-fueling hydrogen station in the oh-so-temperate environs of Torrance, CA. That city is about 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and a sliver of it actually touches the Pacific Ocean, so we're not talking about wild swings in air temperature here. Honda is calling its fast-refueling platform the MC Fill (we'd expect a lawsuit if it was McFill, even though that'd be clever) and says that filling up takes about 45 percent less time than the typical hydrogen-refueling station. That's because the system monitors the ambient temperature in order to speed up the process. There's more scientific stuff in there - for example, the fact that the MC name comes from the "two key values in a heat transfer equation- 'M' for mass and 'C' for specific heat" - but the long and the short of it is that a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle can fill up in less than three minutes. That's pretty impressive, despite the distinct lack of vehicles needing to charge that fast today. Honda unveiled its FCEV Concept vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show last November. The five-seat vehicle has a range of more than 300 miles, while its fuel-stack power density is about 60 percent higher than its previous version. The production version is due to arrive in the US in 2015. Check out Honda's press release below. Honda R&D Installs Advanced Fast-Fill Hydrogen Refueling Station -- New station on Honda R&D Americas' Torrance, California campus built in anticipation of Honda's next-generation fuel cell electric vehicle, due in 2015 -- Honda-developed hydrogen refueling protocol significantly reduces fill time TORRANCE, Calif., March 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Preparing for the 2015 introduction of the next Honda fuel cell-electric vehicle (FCEV), Honda R&D Americas has installed a state-of-the-art hydrogen refueling station on its Torrance, California campus. This advanced station will serve as a platform for demonstrating and validating the enhanced hydrogen fueling protocol developed by Honda, named the MC Fill. With the aim of standardizing this new protocol, Honda will make the new research station available to other automakers to further validate the MC Fill protocol's performance and functionality.
