Car was purchased and sat for around a year, didn't know what I wanted to do with it. Having had an 88 Hatch, 93 Hatch, & a 94 Coupe as a daily, I grew tired of the 94 coupe. Decided to swap most of the parts off the 94 to this 91, and return the 94 to stock and sell it. I drove the car for about 18 months, and having found a great deal on a Cadillac STS, parked the civic and started driving the Cadillac. Eventually the engine in the STS developed a rod knock, so I swapped in a Optima Yellow top and put the 91 back on the road. After about a month, the engine decided to throw in the towel, and the #2 Cylinder has no compression. Either the rings got stuck, or a there's a break/crack in the piston that I can't see with the videoscope. I've tried almost all methods to free the rings (gasoline/trans fluid/mystery oil) all with no success. The car will need to have the bottom end rebuilt or replaced. The engine is about 11 years old, and was supercharged for 9 or those years (12psi). Engine has been in all of my previous civics, and supercharger kit/MSD/Ported head setup has been in the last 3. Supercharger has about 35K on it since rebuild/porting. The upper tensior pulley will need new bearings as well, as the inner bearing is gone. The Body isn't as bad as some EF Civics of this age (23 years). Has typical rocker rust (exterior), inner structure solid. Rust in rear passenger corner above light. When I purchased the car, hood and core support were caved in as a result of a tree or other large object falling on the car. Hood & Bumper filler are still in black primer coat. Drivers Fender is white, and core support is burgandy. Front could use a little stretching on a frame puller if you wanted perfect alignment from the hood to drivers fender, off by approx 1/8in height. Lens covers for bumper lamps are missing as well. Also worth mentioning, the carbon fiber vinyl has started to peel from the A/B/C pillars and will need to be re-glued. Easily a DIY or take to a trim shop and can be done a couple hours. Car will need to be towed as it currently doesn't run. I have roughly $10,000 invested into this car, not counting one penny towards labor. I did all the wrench work myself, interior, exterior, electrical, ALL. If I add a labor figure to this car, @ $60/HR and 10-10HR days (Actual is about double that), it would easily add $6000 to the value. I would like to cut my losses and sell it. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that I'm looking to give this car away. If you are truly interested, and want a fun car that just needs a little work to be road ready, contact me ASAP. Swapping the engine is literally a Sunday with pizza and beers. Asking price is fairly firm around $4250, not set in stone, but again, NOT GIVING THIS AWAY. Car is located in POSEN, IL. 3 Min off of I57, and 10 Min off of I294. I can possibly arrainge a discounted tow to the surrounding suburbs, but that can be discussed when purchase is being finalized. Honda, Top Gear working on 130-mph lawn mower
Wed, 12 Jun 2013We're not even sure they've got a blade of Kentucky Bluegrass to cut, but the folks at Top Gear have gone ahead and started building what will become, if they're successful, the world's fastest lawn mower. Actually, it appears Top Gear is not doing much of the design and assembly work at all, instead having solicited help from experts at Honda and Team Dynamics, which oversees the automaker's touring car efforts.
What the three are working on is a riding lawnmower with a 110-hp engine that can reach 60 miles per hour in four seconds and trim turf at speeds up to 130 mph. If they succeed, such a maximum velocity would put them well ahead of the current record for the world's fastest lawnmower, which is 96.529 mph set by Bobby Cleveland and his Snapper race mower at the Bonneville Salt Flats in September of 2010. Top Gear hasn't said whether or not it will officially go after Cleveland's record, but the build will be featured in an upcoming issue of the Top Gear magazine and is scheduled to be completed by June 17, so we may learn what this maniacal mower's true purpose is then.
According to TG's report on how the build is going, as well as the video of it being fired up (literally) for the first time below, there aren't many actual mower parts left on this machine. What started out as a Honda HF2620 mower now sports wheels and tires from a racing quad, a back axle from a go-kart, a steering rack from a Morris Minor and a 1000cc engine from a Honda VTR1000F sport bike. All that remains from the original mower are the pedals and body panels; even the steel cutting deck has been replaced with a lighter fiberglass version. And blades? This mower will be bladeless, instead using two electric motors to spin lengths of brake cable like a weed whacker.
8 automakers, 15 utilities collaborate on open smart-charging for EVs
Thu, Jul 31 2014We're going to lead with General Motors here. GM is one of eight automakers working with 15 utilities and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) at developing a "smart" plug-in vehicle charging system. Why did we start with GM? Because it's the first automaker whose press release we read that mentioned the other seven automakers. Points for sharing. For the record, the collaboration also includes BMW, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Ford. The utilities include DTE Energy, Duke Energy, Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas & Electric. The idea is to develop a so-called "demand charging" system in which an integrated system lets the plug-ins and utilities communicate with each other so that vehicle charging is cut back at peak hours, when energy is most expensive, and ramped up when the rates drop. Such entities say there's a sense of urgency to develop such a system because the number of plug-in vehicles on US roads totals more than 225,000 today and is climbing steadily. There's a lot of technology involved, obviously, but the goal is to have an open platform that's compatible with virtually any automaker's plug-in vehicle. No timeframe was disclosed for when such a system could go live but you can find a press release from EPRI below. EPRI, Utilities, Auto Manufacturers to Create an Open Grid Integration Platform for Plug-in Electric Vehicles PALO ALTO, Calif. (July 29, 2014) – The Electric Power Research Institute, 8 automakers and 15 utilities are working to develop and demonstrate an open platform that would integrate plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) with smart grid technologies enabling utilities to support PEV charging regardless of location. The platform will allow manufacturers to offer a customer-friendly interface through which PEV drivers can more easily participate in utility PEV programs, such as rates for off-peak or nighttime charging. The portal for the system would be a utility's communications system and an electric vehicle's telematics system. As the electric grid evolves with smarter functionality, electric vehicles can serve as a distributed energy resource to support grid reliability, stability and efficiency. With more than 225,000 plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads -- and their numbers growing -- they are likely to play a significant role in electricity demand side management.
Honda recalling 183k cars and crossovers over unintended braking issue
Thu, 14 Mar 2013A recall has been issued for nearly 183,000 Honda and Acura brand vehicles from the 2005 and 2006 model years. The problem stems from a potential malfunctions to the vehicles' stability control and braking systems.
Drivers have reported a malfunction to Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist system, though to date, no crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of it. Some of the vehicles' Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) control units may have an electric capacitor that was damaged during manufacture. A damaged control unit could cause the VSA system to apply brake force for a "fraction of a second" without any driver input, or could add additional brake force if it malfunctions while the driver is already braking. Either example could increase the risk of a crash.
To fix the issue, Honda will install a new electrical sub-harness, free of charge to the owner. The recall specifies 101,000 Honda Pilot (pictured), 60,000 Acura MDX and 21,000 Acura RL vehicles from the 2005 model year will be affected. An additional 800 MDX crossovers from the 2006 model year are also included in the recall. In addition, 51,000 of the affected 2005 Pilots will be inspected to be sure that a ground bolt for the VSA system is properly tight. Should this bolt come lose, similar unexpected brake activation may occur.
