1972 GMC Sierra Grande, Camper Special, 3/4T, 2WD pickup in original condition. Third state of Washington owner. 126,000 miles. Original 402 cc big block with TH400 transmission and factory AC. Power steering and brakes, bedside factory toolbox, front disc brakes & rear drum brakes, factory camper wiring package. Newer HEI distributor, but have the original factory distributor and coil. Not a tach dash and not a tilt column. Interior is original and exceptionally clean. Exterior is a bit rusty but intact. This truck runs and drives great. Not sure if I would drive it across the country just because I'm not up for an adventure this year, but would drive it 500 - 1000 miles easily.
Bodywork: Original two-tone paint. No signs or stories of any collision damage at any time. The hood, fenders and cowl vent panel have surface rust, but no rust through and are structurally sound. The doors have some corrosion in the typical lower front and rear areas as well as exposed original mirror holes, but are useable, repairable, and structurally sound. It needs both lower cab corners and probably rocker panels. The cab floor pans and cowl area appear fine. The upper cab and the roof panel are fine. The upper box sides have rust through areas on the upper rails - I was told that it had a camper on it for a long time and there must have been moisture in the area between the camper base and the box upper rails. The factory side tool box door is pretty much shot and needs replaced. The tailgate has a fair amount of rust, but could be sandblasted and refinished.
Most of the chrome trim including grille, headlamp surrounds, logos, side marker lamp surrounds, and tailgate trim is pitted and rusty. The front bumper is in pretty fair condition. The rear step bumper is the old style, dealer installed, painted step bumper and in useable condition.
The frame is fine with surface corrosion only and no structural rust through areas. It has rear leaf springs.
The interior is original and about as clean as I have seen in the last few years. The seat has a couple of tears in the side panels, but overall is in great condition. The dash pad is cracked and needs replaced. Door trim panels are in excellent condition. The factory carpet is in excellent condition as are the factory seat belts. The glove box cardboard interior looks brand new. The headliner is sagging a bit. Locks, keys, radio, heater and AC controls all work.
I don't believe that the motor has ever been out of the truck and it starts up immediately and runs out fine with no smoking or hesitating. The transmission shifts fine and the driveline and rear end have no abnormal noises. The wheels are from an 05 Sierra and the tires are in decent shape. All the glass is in good condition.
All in all, a great truck to simply use and drive, or restore at your convenience.

GM trademarks 'GearOn,' possibly for pickups
Fri, 13 Jun 2014On May 27, a week before General Motors applied for a trademark for the word "Zora," GM filed a trademark application at the US Patent and Trademark Office for "GearOn," characterized as a "truck bed cargo system comprised of tiered storage cross rails, utility rack stanchions, cargo dividers and cargo tie down rings."
We have no idea what it will be or if we'll see it used on anything, but GM Authority reckons it could be GM's name for a pickup truck feature to rival the BoxLink system Ford introduced on the 2015 F-150. BoxLink has been described as having "dozens of configurations of stowable cargo ramps and lockable die-cast aluminum tie-down cleats," giving owners the ability to arrange the bed in they way they need and load unwieldy items like motorcycles without needing extra equipment.
Getting purely speculative, a month ago GM pickup truck engineers said there would be more and more regular updates for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra starting next year. Beyond the suspected capability and fuel economy changes GearOn could be one of the "neat things coming in a whole host of areas."
2015 GMC Canyon is a Chevy Colorado in Sierra clothing [w/video]
Sun, 12 Jan 2014Ford may not offer the Ranger in America anymore, nor Dodge (or Ram) its Dakota. But General Motors - not unlike Toyota with its Tacoma and Nissan with the Frontier - isn't about to give up on the midsize pickup market. Less than two months ago, it revealed the new Chevrolet Colorado, and now it's following up with its mechanical twin, the 2015 GMC Canyon.
Launched today ahead of its reveal at the Detroit Auto Show, the Canyon slots into the GMC lineup (and differentiates itself from its Chevrolet twin) with styling that closely apes the larger GMC Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD, only a size or two smaller. Oh, there are visual differences, like a subtly different grille treatment and lower fascia, but it still maintains its big brother's square-jawed good looks and rectilinear flared fenders.
Two aluminum-block engines with direct injection and variable valve timing are available: a 2.5-liter inline-four comes standard with 193 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6 is available with 302 hp and 270 lb-ft. Buyers will also be able to choose between three bodystyle configurations, three trim levels and either two- or four-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmits the power to the road, but a six-speed manual is available on the base model with the 2.5 and 2WD, and there's an All Terrain package available on SLE models. A diesel is expected later.
Should heavy-duty pickup trucks have window stickers with fuel mileage estimates?
Sat, Sep 23 2017If you were to stroll into your nearest Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan, or Ram dealership, you'd find a bunch of pickup trucks. Most of those would have proper window stickers labeled with things like base prices, options prices, location of manufacture, and, crucially, fuel economy estimates. But you'd also run across a number of heavy-duty trucks with no such fuel mileage data from the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA doesn't require automakers to publish the valuable miles-per-gallon measurement for vehicles with gross weight ratings that exceed 8,500 pounds. That makes it difficult for consumers to compare behemoths powered by turbocharged diesel engines – between one another, and between smaller, gasoline-fueled trucks. Consumer Reports doesn't think it should be this way, and it's spearheading an effort (PDF link) to get the government to require manufacturers to publish fuel economy estimates. In its own testing, CR found that heavy-duty pickups powered by Ford's Power Stroke, GM's Duramax, and FCA's Cummins diesel engines (which doesn't include the Ram's EcoDiesel) get worse fuel mileage than their lighter-duty gas-powered siblings. We're not so sure HD-truck buyers are unaware of this fact – big diesels don't really come into their own until big loads are placed in their beds or attached to their trailer hitches. Under heavy workloads, the diesel trucks will almost certainly return greater efficiency than a similar gas-powered truck. What's more, HD trucks with lumbering diesels in general make the driver feel more confident while towing due to greater torque at low engine RPM than gas trucks. They also offer greater max-weight limits. Still, we agree EPA fuel mileage estimates should be offered for heavy-duty pickups. And we think the comparisons provided by Consumer Reports might be interesting to potential buyers. Click here to see the results of CR's tests, and let us know what you think using the poll below.
