CAR & DRIVER: Heavy-duty truck enthusiasts live and die by numbers, perhaps more than any other segment of the automotive sphere.

To that end, the 2011 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty sees a couple of its key numbers swell to 6635 and 21,700. Those are the highest payload and trailer-weight capacities of the GM HD trucks; the totals for the 2500 truck tested here are 2631 and 16,800 pounds, respectively. But when we finished putting this GMC Sierra Denali 2500 through its paces, it wasn't these digits that had our spreadsheets smoking.

What we have here is a 7560-pound truck that's quicker than the first Chevy Camaro we ever tested and capable of hauling most of one in the bed or towing four behind it on a trailer.

GM's acceleration numbers embarrass a 2011 diesel F-250 we tested (8.0 seconds to 60 and 16.2 in the quarter at 86 mph). Most buyers aren't drag-racing their 7600-plus-pound trucks--give yourself a high-five if you do--but the Sierra's fleetness means that, even with a gooseneck hanging off the back, it'll be the Camry in the next lane that holds up traffic.

AUTOGUIDE: The 6.6-liter, V8 turbo diesel engine boasts 397 horsepower at 3000 rpm, and an eye-popping, mother-lovin', stump pulling, 765 lb-ft of torque at only 1600 rpm! And if you want bragging rights at the drag strip, you can reach 60 mph from a dead stop in just over 7 seconds and cross the 1/4 mile in just over 15 seconds. All that power is put to the pavement via an Allison 6-speed Automatic Transmission that keeps the engine pulling in it's power band, yet somehow manages to shift smoothly all the way up through the gears. A manumatic feature is standard with a small toggle switch on the gear shift lever for up and downshifts.

To help you keep that trailer going straight down the road, there's Trailer Sway Control and an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, which work in conjunction with the StabiliTrak to identify if your trailer is swaying, and then uses the engine, brakes and even the trailer's brakes to keep the trailer under control. Also standard is the Hill Start Assist which holds the brakes for 1.5 seconds, to give you time to move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal, without any backward movement of the vehicle if you're starting out on an uphill incline. Automatic Grade Braking helps slow the Denali on downhill grades by using the engine and transmission to your advantage, giving the driver increased confidence and reducing brake wear.

Everything in the cabin is neat and clean and well thought out. The controls are easy to use and everything is placed where it should be. The center stack features a Nav system with back-up camera and park assist sonar, which has a nice size screen, and it's easy to use. The console is large and deep so it offers a lot of useful storage. There is plenty of headroom in front and back. The 60/40 back bench seat cushion folds up, to offer a very large flat floor space. Plenty of sound-deadening material, adjustable pedals, complete power (windows, locks, remote start, moon/sun roof, seats, etc.).

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 prototype shows off differences from Silverado

Fri, Feb 2 2018

Now that the new Silverado has made its debut, we're awaiting the reveal of its mildly restyled twin, the GMC Sierra 1500. While it likely won't be that different as far as capability and major equipment are concerned, we are looking forward to seeing what design changes it will have. Based on these recent spy shots, the changes will be mild, but still enough to make it visually distinctive. One of the more obvious differences will be in the front fascia treatment. Unlike the Silverado's grille that's level with the top of the headlights, the GMC's will rise above the lights, which will also yield a slight drop on each side of the hood to meet the lights. The grille is quite tall, extending far below the headlights, too. We can make out, behind some mesh, two dips on the outer edges of the grille that give the Sierra a more menacing frown. Large foglights are also found right near where the scoops for the wheel air curtains, and the headlights are unified on the edges, rather than split on the Silverado. Along the sides, the sheet metal looks relatively unchanged. At some angles, we can make out the distinctive shoulder line from the Silverado that runs up to about the rear mirrors where it stops to make room for another crease that rises up from somewhere in the middle of the front doors to lead to the front. The wheel arches are decidedly different from the Silverado's though. While the Silverado has fairly rounded arches, the Sierra's have a rear-slanted bevel to the fronts of the arches and a rounded 90-degree corner at the rears. There isn't much we can tell about the rear except for the taillights. They're quite large, and unlike the Silverado's, there aren't any areas where the sheet metal intrudes. It also appears that the tops of the taillights extend farther forward into the bed sides than the Chevy's. Because the Sierra has almost always been a mechanical twin of the Silverado, we expect it to offer the same 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s, as well as the new 3.0-liter diesel inline-6. Also, being a GMC, it will likely have a flashy, chrome-laden Denali trim level. We also will see the fully revealed model soon, as Automotive News reports the debut will be on March 1. GM will compensate SUV owners for fuel-economy error [UPDATE]

Mon, May 23 2016

General Motors will offer debit cards to owners of some of its crossover SUVs after it was discovered that GM overstated the vehicles' fuel economy on window stickers, Automotive News says. GM will offer reimbursements to about 135,000 customers that are worth between $450 and $1,500 each. Some owners will also have the option of being provided with an extended warranty free of charge instead of the debit card. GM overstated fuel economy on about 170,000 vehicles by one to two miles per gallon because of what it has said was an inadvertent error stemming from not factoring the impact of emissions-related hardware into the EPA window-sticker figures. As a result, GM put a temporary stop-sale on the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave before switching out the window stickers on about 60,000 vehicles. Automotive News says letters and debit cards will be sent out next week, and Reuters is estimating that the reimbursement program will cost GM about $100 million. With automakers ranging from Hyundai/Kia to Ford to, more recently, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi being ensnared by emissions or fuel-economy-rating issues, GM is working quickly to address the problem. For those curious, the reimbursement totals, factoring in current gas prices, the SUVs' combined fuel economy, and typical driving of about 12,000 miles a year, will provide between three and 12 months worth of free gas for those drivers (the models get either 17 or 18 miles per gallon combined, depending on front- or four-wheel-drive configuration). While about 135,000 customers will be reimbursed, Automotive News says the fleet buyers of about 35,000 crossovers haven't been addressed yet. UPDATE: GM spokesman James Cain, in an e-mail to Autoblog on Sunday, confirmed that the company will reimburse about 135,000 customers. Purchase customers will be given the option of a pre-paid debit card or a 48-month/60,000-mile protection plan, while lease customers will be offered the pre-paid debit cards. Most of the cards will have a value of between $450 and $900 on them. "We want all of our customers to have a great ownership experience, so we designed this reimbursement program to provide full and fair compensation in a simple, flexible, and timely manner," he wrote.
