GM pushing back on proposed pickup and SUV brake recall [w/poll]

Through the first six months of 2014, General Motors has recalled 29 million cars and trucks in 54 different actions. If your author's notoriously sketchy math is correct, that'd work out to one recall every 3.5 days (as of this writing). GM is actively fighting to make sure there isn't a 55th recall, though.
Safety critics, including perennial nemesis Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety, are calling on GM to recall a further six million pickup trucks and SUVs in northerly climes due to corroding brake lines caused by the use of road salt. There is a catch, here, though ­- the vehicles in question are over 10 years old, and include the 1999 to 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban and GMC Sierra, as well as the 2000 to 2003 Tahoe and Yukon (shown above).

GM's half-ton pickup line will be fully rounded up later this week when the new GMC Sierra 1500 is revealed. Though the unveiling is on March 1, GMC has provided a teaser of the new truck ahead of time on Twitter. It shows only the front fascia, but considering the Sierra's history of simply being a badge-engineered Silverado, it's arguably the most important angle of the truck. The teaser confirms a few things we were expecting based on past spy shots. The headlights look much more conventional than the Silverado's rather small units. The Sierra's grille, unlike the Silverado's, will also rise above the tops of the headlights, providing more of a big-rig appearance. We also finally get to see the GMC badge on the front of the Sierra, and it looks like it's an enormous rendition. As for the rest of the truck, previous spy shots have shown the Sierra will have other subtle styling changes from the Silverado. The wheel wells are shaped differently, and the taillights will be unique to the GMC. The interior of the new Sierra will look almost identical to that of the Silverado, with the exception of a few minor trim details. We also expect the Sierra to use the same engine lineup as the Chevy's, which at this point we know will consist of a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-six, and naturally aspirated 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s. GM able to add diesel to half-ton pickups if market demands it

A few years ago, the trend in half-ton pickup trucks was ultra-luxurious trims, often with the words "limited" or "platinum" tacked on after the model name. That was well and good, but we like this latest fad a lot more - diesel engines. First, Ram came to bat with a 3.0-liter, V6 turbodiesel for the 1500, then Nissan announced that the next-generation Titan would be getting an eight-cylinder Cummins diesel.
Now, word is coming in from AutoGuide that General Motors can, if it so chooses, drop a diesel engine into its light-duty trucks. The plot thickens, though, as it turns out that said diesel would be the same one Ram is using for its truck. According to AG, that engine comes from VM Motori, which GM owns a sizable chunk of. Therefore, GM can snag the 3.0-liter, V6 diesel for its trucks just as easily, if not more easily, than Ram.
If it's so easy for the Detroit-based manufacturer to access the engines, why not offer the a diesel-powered Sierra and Silverado from the start, then? According to GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson, The General doesn't seem so confident in a diesel pickup outside of its HD offerings. According to Wilkinson, the cost-benefit ratio doesn't line up for customers, thanks to both the impact on the truck's sticker price and the higher price of diesel, in general (the national average for a gallon of diesel is 43 cents more than a gallon of 87-octane unleaded).
