Truck Trend names GMC Sierra Denali 2016 PTOTY

Citing its best-in-class power, its amenities, and technology, Truck Trend magazine has named the GMC Sierra Denali its 2016 Pickup Truck of the Year. Seven "all-new or significantly revised pickup trucks" were invited to compete, and out of the seven tested categories the Sierra won interior, functionality, and "Empirical," and scored second in highway testing and exterior looks. It beat the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country and Colorado Z71 diesel, GMC Canyon SLT diesel, Nissan Titan XD Pro4X, Ram 1500 Rebel, and Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. In the mag's 43rd annual Four-Wheeler of the Year award, the Range Rover SVR claimed the crown. The Sierra got refreshed this year with new front-end styling with HID headlamps and LED accents, tech features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless phone charging, and optional convenience features like a remote locking tailgate and power articulated assist steps. The big powertrain upgrade was availability of the 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This is the second time Truck Trend has conferred a PTOTY award, the Ford F-150 walking away with the silverware last year. The nod to the Sierra comes after sister publication Motor Trend named the 2016 Chevy Colorado with the Duramax diesel engine its Truck of the Year. Now, there are certainly some models that are smaller (Nissan Rogue Sport) or larger (Kia Sorento) that could also be considered, but we figured it was wise to stick with those in this sweet spot of comparable size and price. Sometimes it's turbocharged, often its not, but standard engine outputs are generally in the same ballpark. Therefore, we'd recommend focusing on torque output, as it's what will make a difference around town or when passing, and weighing that versus fuel economy (the Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 make particularly strong cases in this regard). Many drivers aren't too fond of continuously variable transmissions (CVT), either, so that's another thing to consider and note during a test drive. As you can see, several models are available with performance upgrades. Besides the Jeep Cherokee's available V6, all are more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The exception to this would be the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, as their 1.5-liter turbo engines don't prioritize performance. Instead, they serve as overall upgrades to the base naturally aspirated engines standard on only their base trim levels (CR-V LX and Escape S).

2020 Chevy and GMC HD truck spy shots reveal LED lighting

With Chevy and GMC's 1500 series pickups just starting to roll into dealerships, our attention naturally turns to the Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 series trucks. We've seen these HD trucks testing already, but thes latest spy photos give us our first good glimpse of the two HD trucks' headlights through some translucent camouflage, and their designs appear very interesting and quite different from each other. The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD looks to be getting a striking set of LED lights that flank the grille. A previously released teaser image of the truck shows that the front lighting elements are split by a bulky wing that branches out from a big, upright chrome face, and both top and bottom units seem to incorporate LED slashes. If you look closely at the images, you can easily make out the Chevrolet script cut into the grille's top edge. Amidst a bevy of Chevy test trucks was one lone GMC model in a dually configuration, and the Sierra HD also appears to have some LED accent lighting up front. Unlike the boomerang-shaped Chevy LEDs, GMC's version sports a shoulder-like right angle of light bars. Assuming these are production-level lighting units, it seems the Sierra HD will stick pretty close to the face of GMC's latest light-duty pickup truck. We're still waiting for confirmation on what range of powertrains will be available in GM's next-gen HD trucks, but we're sure there will be both gasoline- and diesel-burning engines on the ordering sheet. We expect to hear official details on the trucks sometime soon.
