GMC Hummer EV First Drive Review | True supertruck, for better and for worse

Right from the start, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV has been advertised with superlatives, mostly in reference to its specifications. GMC has even called it a "supertruck" in its own materials. And while we've received a taste of the truck before, only now have we finally got our hands on the production-spec model, and had the opportunity to drive it both off-road and on the street. What we've found is that the Hummer EV is undoubtedly a supertruck, much the same way that a Ferrari or a Lamborghini is a supercar. It totally delivers on its incredible capabilities, but there are compromises. And they're worth being aware of before plunking down the more than $100,000 a first-year Hummer will run you. That six-figure truck is the version we tested, the Edition 1, which actually rings in at $112,595. It's the only version in production for now, with lower trims coming in the next couple years. It's sold out, but many of the features will be available on the next highest trim level, the EV 3X. Among those features are the three motors, torque vectoring, “Watts To Freedom” launch mode, four-wheel steering, removable glass roof panels, 35-inch tires, Super Cruise, power rear window and MultiPro tailgate. In other words, although you can literally no longer order an Edition 1, you can still order a Hummer EV with nearly the same specification. This content is hosted by a third party. No one can resist seeing what 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque will feel like. It's even a tad more torque in Watts To Freedom mode, which preemptively runs the cooling system to enable the additional twist. That mode allows the Hummer to hit 60 mph in 3 seconds, and the drama is dialed up with visual, audible and haptic cues. But even without engaging launch mode, the Hummer EV impresses and delights with its acceleration. In addition to pinning you to the seat, the entire truck squats in an exaggerated fashion. It's absurd, especially considering the truck's curb weight that surpasses a truly astounding 9,000 pounds. ThatÂ’s several hundred pounds more than the heaviest GMC Sierra HD 3500 diesel dually. Of course, that weight, as well as the nature of electric motors, means the party starts to calm down as the speed increases. The weight is noticeable in other areas, too.

2017 GMC Canyon Denali brings the bling

Denali is an incredibly important part of GMC's product strategy. It takes very little effort to create a Denali variant, and these models retail for big premiums over the models on which they're based. So if you're GMC, it makes sense that you'd want to create a Denali version of every product in your range. That in mind, enter the 2017 Canyon Denali. GMC's midsize pickup gets all of the usual Denali trimmings, including a new grille, chrome trim, 20-inch wheels, and the necessary badging. Inside, there's a unique instrument panel, Jet Black leather, heated and cooled seats, and again, Denali badges abound. GMC says the Canyon Denali will be offered exclusively in the crew cab body style, with either the 3.6-liter gasoline V6 or 2.8-liter diesel engine. The Canyon Denali will be offered in six exterior colors. VIDEO TRANSCRIPT [00:00:00] Hey, guys. This is Seyth with Autoblog, and I'm here in the 2015 GMC Canyon pickup truck. The version I'm in is about as bare bones as this truck gets. We've got a convenience group package, which means I have things like a remote lock and unlock. I've got a spray-in bed liner and then I've got the very tiny but still useful infotainment system, which allows for things like hooking up your phone, [00:00:30] Bluetooth streaming music from my iPhone to the sound system, things of that nature. Really there's not a whole lot here. What you see is what you get. The interior is pretty basic. We've got gray plastic. We've got black plastic. We've got these gray cloth seats which I actually kind of dig. They've got a cool shape. It's comfortable in terms of the interior but it's certainly not fancy at all. You go back and look into the segment and you look at offerings from Nissan and Toyota and you'll see that this really feels pretty [00:01:00] plush certainly compared to their base level trucks. We've got the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder in it. Still makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound feet of torque. It doesn't feel completely slow but I'll admit that some of that has to do with the fact that I have a six-speed to play around with. I'm revving it up a little bit higher than you normally would with a pickup truck. It's not fast. It doesn't mean that it's not a little bit fun to drive. [00:01:30] We've come so far in terms of overall ride quality, noise vibration and harshness and things of that nature in all pickup trucks that it's frankly surprising to see something at the very bottom end in terms of price of the market be as good as this is. I think that you're going to get a lot of people who are into the truck lifestyle who like the look. You're going to get a lot of people who are moving down from bigger trucks that still want to have a little bit of capability. Then with things with a truck of this nature where you're talking about a [00:02:00] sub-$25,000 price point, you're just going to get a lot of people who want a vehicle of any kind, kind of a budget vehicle.
