2017 GMC Acadia comes into focus
Tue, Jan 20 2015The future slate of crossovers from General Motors reportedly ride on the company's new, scalable Chi platform. With short- or long-wheelbase configurations possible, the chassis conceivably allows the automaker to be more adaptable in the configuration of its CUVs. Cadillac already appears to be testing Chi for the luxury brand's future SRX/XT5, and here it is again under heavy camouflage underpinning the next GMC Acadia. Unfortunately, the Acadia is so well concealed here that it's extremely difficult to pick out any of the styling changes, though the squared-off fenders and faint GMC logo peaking through the tape on the front wheels reveal what this vehicle is. Up front, the grille appears to sit somewhat lower than the current model, and the vertical LED running lights are easy to pick out. The orientation of the taillights through the camo suggests wraparound units not too dissimilar from the current Acadia (or is that Saturn Outlook?). The next-gen Acadia is expected to debut in 2016 as a 2017 model year vehicle. The powertrain options may include the current 3.6-liter V6, a four-cylinder and possibly even a turbo V6, and GM's new nine-speed automatic might also be for offer. GM announces six new recalls, covering 3.5 million vehicles
Mon, 16 Jun 2014General Motors has just initiated another crushingly large recall, this time affecting some 3.36 million vehicles built between 2000 and 2014 and sold in the US, Canada and Mexico. Once again, the issue surrounds the cars' ignition switches, which can be kicked out of the run position if they're carrying extra weight or if they experience a "jarring" event. In this particular case, though, GM will modify the keys, rather than the ignition itself.
A four-by-six-millimeter hole will be drilled into the key, which will more safely accommodate the weight of the key ring. As is usually the case, the work will be done free of charge. The recalled vehicles include the 2000 to 2005 Cadillac Deville, 2004 to 2005 Buick Regal LS and GS, 2004 to 2011 Cadillac DTS, 2005 to 2009 Buick Lacrosse, 2006 to 2008 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2006 to 2011 Buick Lucerne and 2006 to 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Only the Impala is still in production, and even then, it's only sold to fleet companies.
According to an official statement from GM, there have been eight crashes and six injuries due to this latest issue. As if this isn't a dire enough blow for GM, the company has announced five smaller recalls, covering 165,000 vehicles.
GM planning to put its fullsize pickups on a big diet, too
Fri, 19 Jul 2013General Motors is just coming off a complete redesign of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra for 2014, but in the US fullsize truck market, there is no rest for the weary. According to Reuters, plans are already unfurling for both trucks to drop pounds from their curb weight over the next few years, but this will unlikely be able to keep pace with the 700-pound diet targeted for the next-generation Ford F-150, a truck expected to debut late next year.
The biggest weight reduction for these trucks might not be available until the next full redesign, which will likely happen around 2019, but the article says that smaller updates could shave pounds in the meantime. Two examples given include an "aluminum-intensive" version of the Silverado that could shed 250 pounds and debut around the same time as the lighter-weight, aluminum-bodied 2015 Ford, and there is also talk of reducing weight for driveline components such as axles and driveshafts. These changes are all part of an attempt to meet strict new fuel economy standards coming in 2017, targets which will get even tougher in 2025.
