For sale is my 1970 Ford Torino GT.  I have spent the last several years restomoding this car to make it a reliable driver car and now find I have to sell it at the very end of all my work.  My loss, your gain.

First, please understand what you are looking at.  This is not a nut and bolt restoration car.  This car is not original.  It has been modified to make it look like an old car but drive like a new car.  It is a awesome looking car and very reliable.  I don't know what the original engine was, the original color, etc.  I don't know and I don't care.  This car was built to be a hot rod from the start and I made it look and perform the very best I could. If you are looking for a original example of the Torino line, please look at other cars.  This is not the one for you.

The 1970 Torino is one of the sexiest car out there with it's wide hips and long, low lines.  And this one has been enhanced to make it one of the best performing and most reliable Torino's out there. Because of the mods I have made, it starts every time, runs like it should, drives and handles nice.  This is a car you can own and drive for many years to come and just enjoy.

The Drive Train:

The engine started life as a 2bbl 351C.  This is the engine you want because you get the low end streetable torque the 4 bbl versions don't give because of the huge valves.  The 2 bbl heads have been ported and polished and flow tested to optimize performance.  It also has Crane Roller Rockers in it, high compression valve springs, flat top pistons, an Edlebrock 4 bbl manifold, with a Holly 4 bbl Projection Fuel injection system.  The engine has about 1000 miles on it since it was rebuilt top to bottom.  It runs like it should, with a little lope from the big cam.  Includes a GM style HEI distributor for great spark.  Oil pressure runs about 60 psi.  Drive it anywhere you want with confidence.

Additionally, I worked with Modern Drivelines in Montana to install a Tremec Rover TR3650 5-speed stick.  The transmission is brand new from the factory.  The Rover TR3650's are the heavy duty transmission with all the good stuff to take high torque applications like this 351C.  I installed an original Torino clutch pedal assembly and modified it to operate a new cable clutch system with new Ram Clutch assembly and flywheel from Summit Racing.  This also included a conversion to a modern high torque starter from the new Mustangs.  I also added a cable X speedometer converter to take the electronic output from the transmission and connect that to the original speedometer.  Works spot on.

With the 5 speed, you can do a burn out if that's your thing, or you can cruise down the highway at 70 mph at about 2300 RPM.  The car does both equally well.

The 9" rear end was rebuilt with new Richmond 3:55 gears and a Richmond Powertrax locker rear end for traction.  I also installed a new drive shaft and u-joint assembly.  The car also has blacked out traction bars installed.

I also installed a new set of Hooker headers with a new dual exhaust stystem all the way out the back with 3" Chrome tips at the ends.  I have literally had 5 sets of mufflers on this car trying to get the sound just right and finally landed on the current mufflers and dual exhaust system purchased from Perogie Enterprises.  The sound is just like the glass packs of old. It barks when you step on it and it quiets down when you are cruising. Great sound and great performance.

Steering and Suspension:

To improve the handling of the car, the wheels were changed to Cragar 17"X9" rims and fitted with 50 series BG Goodrich Z-rated tires at all four corners.  I then worked to optimize the shock and spring rates to get the correct ride height, ride quality, all while making it just carve the corners.  Once I got that right, I installed a modern Borgeson Power steering box to eliminated the horrible Ford  power steering system.  For a car this size, this thing really hooks up.  I also installed a wood grant steering wheel.

With the wheels and tires, as well as the lower stance and refined shock and spring rates, this thing corners like it is on rails. Yet it rides smooth and soft.  Pretty amazing for a large car like this.  Very fun to drive.

Electrical:

To add reliability, I installed a complete new wiring system with modern fuse box.  Every circuit is new front to back with some extra circuits available if you want to add more equipment.

Sound:

The stereo is a Pioneer Super Tuner with CD player connected to a 900 Watt Infinity Amp.  The Infinity amp is then connected to (2) Infinity 6X9 Triaxial speakers mounted on the rear deck and two 3" tweeters mounted in the kick panels in the front.  It also drives a 12" Infinity woofer in the trunk.  To power the system, I installed a 200 amp alternator.  Play what you want to play as loud as you want to play it.  You want it to thump, it will thump.  You want to hear a screaming guitar, it will play a screaming guitar.  No limits.

Exterior:

The paint is very good.  There are a few (maybe a dozen or so) small chips that have been touched up.  The paint looks excellent up close and far away.  It shines like it is wet and is nice and smooth.  The chrome and trim I would rate about a 7 out of 10.  The bumpers are good and straight but the chrome has lost some of it's luster.  And there are a few plastic pieces like the plastic chrome that goes around the marker lights that is painted with chrome paint.  They look nice, but they are not chrome like original.

I installed a front air valance and it really give the car a low and nice look.

Interior:

The interior is black bucket seats.  The seats are custom black vinyl.  On the back of the front seats, on the lower edge of the door panel, and on the inside of the trunk, there is a custom flame job stitched in black on the black seats which gives it a really nice custom look that is very cool and very subtle at the same time.  On top of the each seat, there is also a cobra stitched in black as well.  This really give the interior a custom feel but it does not jump out as some gaudy work.  Very professional and appropriate.

The trunk is also finished in black carpet.  It looks great.  Again, a very professional job.  You will be proud to open the trunk and show off the work.

Issues:

Like most 40+ year old Torino's, it did have some rust from the water drainage system that eventually leaks onto the floor pans and rusts out the pans from the carpet getting wet.  This one has had the floor pans repaired on both sides.  These were repaired before I got the car.  It is not a pretty job, but nice and solid, and I have not had any problems with the work.  If you are like me and don't really care what it looks like from underneath, you will be happy with the work.  If you want it to look like a factory job, you would have to cut out the repair work and install new pans.  The driver side torque box would need some repair as well. This is the only rust that I know of on the car.  I have been all over it front to back, had it completely apart, and the front floor pans are all I can find.

The console in the car was for an automatic.  With the swap to a stick, the opening where the stick comes through the console does not completely cover up the hole.  There is a boot there but you can see through the console to the where the boot is bolted to the floor.   It is not a big deal to me, but it is a cosmetic issue that could look better.

This car has factory AC.  I have not driven it except for extremely nice summer days so I have not tried to use the heater or the AC system.  When I rewired it, the AC compressor did come on and work and the fan blows nice and the air is directed to the vents or floor as it should.  I have the heater hose turned off to the heater core.  I had planned to take out the factory system and install a vintage air system but did not get that done so I never really fooled with it.

Consumer Reports says Toyota, Ford, Honda and Chevy are big winners in brand perception survey

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

According to Consumer Reports, the automotive brands that stand out in the minds of car buyers are, in order: Toyota, Ford, Honda and Chevrolet. This news comes after the magazine polled its readers, asking them to take into account vehicle quality, safety, performance, value, fuel economy, design/style, and technology/innovation - which are the factors that car shoppers are most influenced by.
It's important to note that this award is only about perception. In other words, it's perceived quality, not actual quality. "Often, perception can be a trailing indicator, reflecting years of good or bad performance in a category, and it can also be influenced by headlines in the media," said Jeff Bartlett, Consumer Reports deputy automotive editor.
The brand that made the biggest jump in perception amongst Consumer Reports readers is Tesla, which posted an impressive 47-point gain to finish in fifth place. Subaru is also notable for finishing in the top 10, despite being one of the smaller manufacturers doing business in the US. Scroll down below for all the details from Consumer Reports, if you're so inclined.

Martini Mustang is a 'what if moment' gone right

Wed, 23 Oct 2013

Feast your eyes on a masterpiece. This is Steve Strope's Ford Mustang in the classic fastback bodystyle, and as you'll notice, it sports the signature colors of Martini Racing, a livery that's as legendary as any Gulf Racing-styled car. But the red, white and blues of the Martini stripe down this Mustang's middle tell only a very small part of the story, in the latest video from Petrolicious.
What would you guess is under the hood? A 289-cubic-inch V8? Maybe a 302, or some absurd Ford crate engine? Maybe Strope went all Tokyo Drift - he's actually responsible for the "Hammer" Plymouth Satellite driven by Vin Diesel at the end of the movie - and found an RB26DETT to drop into the pony car? You'd be wrong on all counts.
This mad, mad man somehow finagled a Ford-Lotus engine from a 1966 Indianapolis 500 car into the Mustang's engine bay. Yes, a Mustang with an engine designed for a 160-mile-per-hour, open-wheel racecar. That's like someone in 40 years dropping McLaren's 2.4-liter V8 from the MP4-28 into a Scion FR-S. It'd just make a monster.

eBay Find of the Day: 25-station video gaming trailer w/ bonus Ford F-250

Fri, Nov 28 2014

Why, you might be asking yourself, is Autoblog showing me an eBay Motors listing for a 2006 Ford F-250 and a box trailer (with a badly cropped photo to boot)? It's not because we're highly interested in this blue-collar rig, to be sure, but rather because we're interested in throwing the greatest Forza party of all time. Housed in that innocuous white 26-foot trailer is a gamer's delight, with 25 Xbox 360 systems connected up to 25 high-definition monitors and 24 headsets to keep everyone locked into the action (one of the stations is outside the trailer). When connected up to one of two included generators, the setup allows for two-dozen combatants to square off, back-to-back and head-to-head. Sure, the Buy It Now price of $79,000 seems steep considering the trailer will need about ten grand worth of Xbox One or Playstation 4 upgrades in the near future. But that doesn't mean you couldn't squeeze out a few more years of massive multiplayer fun. Check out the listing here, and do let us know if you buy it, we'd love to come over and game.
