2002 Ford Thunderbird

Emerging from a hiatus of several years, Ford introduced the 11th generation Thunderbird in 2002. Returning to the original formula for the Thunderbird, the latest version had the two-seat coupe/convertible layout of the first generation. And the retro styling was complemented by the Jaguar-designed 3.9 litre DOHC V8 powerplant, producing 252bhp and 267 lb·ft of torque, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.

From the first year of production, this stunning black on black example is offered in excellent all-round condition. A repainted front bumper cover, due to stone chips, is the only evidence of body repair, and you have to look closely to see that. The interior is excellent with very minor wear to the leather surfaces and carpet. The soft top is in excellent condition.

The mechanicals are all excellent with a taut and responsive engine, smooth transmission, and good brakes, suspension and steering. All electrical systems work perfectly. The car features a CD player and chrome wheels with good tires

The car shows 164,000 miles, but the carfax shows a jump of 70,000 miles in a very short timeframe. The condition of this T/bird is that of a car with considerably less mileage, and two independent mechanics have agreed with that. The accelerator pedal shows the wear of a car with less than half the indicated mileage, as do details around the car, such as the drivers seat, engine bay, etc. I have not been able to get to the bottom of the story, but the car really is in stunning condition, and well worth inspection. I feel it is priced accordingly, and a great opportunity for a deal.

Nuclear-powered concept cars from the Atomic Age

Thu, 17 Jul 2014

In the 1950s and early 60s, the dawn of nuclear power was supposed to lead to a limitless consumer culture, a world of flying cars and autonomous kitchens all powered by clean energy. In Europe, it offered the then-limping continent a cheap, inexhaustible supply of power after years of rationing and infrastructure damage brought on by two World Wars.
The development of nuclear-powered submarines and ships during the 1940s and 50s led car designers to begin conceptualizing atomic vehicles. Fueled by a consistent reaction, these cars would theoretically produce no harmful byproducts and rarely need to refuel. Combining these vehicles with the new interstate system presented amazing potential for American mobility.
But the fantasy soon faded. There were just too many problems with the realities of nuclear power. For starters, the powerplant would be too small to attain a reaction unless the car contained weapons-grade atomic materials. Doing so would mean every fender-bender could result in a minor nuclear holocaust. Additionally, many of the designers assumed a lightweight shielding material or even forcefields would eventually be invented (they still haven't) to protect passengers from harmful radiation. Analyses of the atomic car concept at the time determined that a 50-ton lead barrier would be necessary to prevent exposure.

Tier 1 suppliers call GM the worst OEM to work with

Mon, 12 May 2014

Among automakers with a big US presence, General Motors is the worst to work for, according to a new survey from Tier 1 automotive suppliers, conducted by Planning Perspectives, Inc.
The Detroit-based manufacturer, which has been under fire following the ignition switch recall and its accompanying scandal, finished behind six other automakers with big US manufacturing operations. Suppliers had issues with trust and communications, as well as intellectual property protection. GM was also the least likely to allow suppliers to raise their prices in the face of unexpected increases in material cost, all of which contributed to 55 percent of suppliers saying their relationship with GM was "poor to very poor."
GM's cross-town competitors didn't fare much better. Chrysler finished in fifth place, ahead of GM and behind Dearborn-based Ford, which was passed for third place this year by Nissan. Toyota took the top marks, while Honda captured second place.

Carmakers, NHTSA to unveil auto-emergency braking agreement tomorrow

Wed, Mar 16 2016

Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve. Tomorrow, there will be green beer, corned beef and cabbage, and automatic emergency braking for all. Weird combo, we know. But on St. Patty's we can expect an official announcement from a pact of automakers making auto-braking systems standard equipment by 2022. That's per a report from Reuters, which cites three sources familiar with the plans. Originally announced in September 2015 by 10 automakers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agreement is expected to be even larger when the details are unveiled tomorrow. According to Reuters, the manufacturers of 99 percent of the US domestic market's vehicles will be represented by the new agreement. It's believed that standard AEB systems could prevent thousands of accidents across the country. Expect more on the official announcement when it's made. Related Video:
