1994 Ford Thunderbird

Engine: 302, 40,000 miles, Exterior: Red, Interior: Red. VIN: 1FABP46W0EH119852 . THe history of the car is important to its value. The car was built by the Jack Rousch Company in 1994.  It was ordered by Legendary public relations motors port director for PPG by the name of Jim Chapman. The cost was $85,000 and was the only PPG pace car for the championship auto racing teams series (cart) that was street legal. All the pace cars of that time were not street legal and at the end of their life, were to be destroyed as presented in the contract.
The car was used to give pace car rides to guest of PPG and to pace races midway through 1994 season and into 1995 season.
The car is unique cause it is greatly modified compared to the 1994 Ford Thunderbird Turbo of the time. It has a hand built 302 high roller engine (high performance) and at the time was run as high as 165 mph. It has a 5 speed gear box ans a koni air suspension along with Craiger rims and oversized tires. The outside body is in very good condition with no rust and one tiny dent put in it at the 1995 Michigan race by Johnny Rutherford when he hit an orange cone.
The interior is also red and in very good condition, although a little faded. The car has 40,000 miles on it. At the end of its use as a pace car, it was given to Kenny Lowe who managed the pace car team under Jim Chapman (who was Babe Ruth's manager and PR guy until he died). Kenny was as they say "volume challenged" and did not fit well in the car so he sold it to a member of the cart safety team. The safety team member sold it to me after he left it in his garage for 13 years. He used it on occasion but needed the space in his garage. I bought it from him and as only the third owner, have only driven it on occasion but it pretty much has sat unused in my garage. The engine was recently tuned up and is running great.

The historical value is that the car was a special order by Jim Chapman and was designed to be street legal, yet worked as a very fast pace car for the cart series. I doubt it is the only pace car left from that time period, it represents the golden age of open wheel racing as a street legal pace car for the very popular cart series. My interest in selling it is to a collector who cal appreciate the history and uniqueness of the car. It is simply too much of a car for me and the primary use I got for it was for car shows and special vintage car rally's. Sadly, I am no longer able to participate in these events.

Even Ford executives had issues with MyFord Touch

Fri, Oct 7 2016

MyFord Touch is one of the auto industry's more controversial features. The media broadly panned the infotainment system developed with Microsoft for its slow responses and reliance on voice commands to navigate its deep menus. Oh, and Ford executives weren't big fans, either. Newly revealed court documents in a California class-action lawsuit demonstrate the level of venom Ford employees, both big and small, reserved for the Blue Oval's infotainment system. An error caused Bill Ford's navigation system to crash, leaving the family scion stuck on the side of the road in an unfamiliar area. The documents, unearthed by Forbes, detail current CEO Mark Fields' aggravations with MFT, too. A mechanic emailed an image of a cracked infotainment screen on an Edge to one of Ford's top Sync engineers, Kenneth Williams, suggesting "Mark Fields may have been a little aggravated with the system." But Ford and Fields' issues are nothing compared to the woes of the engineers that had to work on MFT. In a collection of emails obtained by Forbes, one engineer called the system "a polished turd," while another simply said, "These poor customers." And after one engineer suggested using a photo of Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant – home of the Edge, Flex, Lincoln MKX, and MKT production – as a background for the system, one of his coworkers said in an email that someone should instead Photoshop the image to read "abandon hope all ye who enter here," the Detroit News reports. Another summed up the problem, saying: "Ford's quality reputation is completely on the line ... another model year with the same crap is not acceptable." MyFord Touch almost single-handedly torpedoed Ford's reputation in widely reported quality metrics, including JD Power and Consumer Reports. Ford responded with a refreshed Sync3, a wildly improved rethink of its infotainment system that is far more responsive and easier to live with every day. NHTSA advances investigation of Ford Crown Victoria headlights

Sat, Aug 15 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation into reports of suddenly failing headlights on 517,945 examples of the 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The government started looking into this problem in April when the North Carolina Consumers Council filed a defect petition with the agency. Now, the inquiry has moved to the next step. According to NHTSA's documentation (as a PDF), it examined its own database and worked with Ford to come up with a total of 3,609 complaints of the front lighting control module suddenly failing. When this happens, drivers lose the low-beam headlights, but the high-beams can be used by holding the stalk. Sometimes turning the switch off and on fixes the issue. Additionally, there are 15 allegations of crashes, and one reported shoulder injury. NHTSA's preliminary evaluations "evaluate the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged defect" and don't necessarily lead to a recall. NHTSA looked into this problem once before in 2008 and 2009 and decided that a recall wasn't necessary. Ford also extended the warranty on the front lighting control module for these vehicles. INVESTIGATION Subject : Loss of headlights Date Investigation Opened: AUG 10, 2015 Date Investigation Closed: Open NHTSA Action Number: PE15028 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING All Products Associated with this Investigation Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) FORD CROWN VICTORIA 2003-2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 2003-2005 Details Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company SUMMARY: After receiving a defect petition (DP15002) concerning the loss of headlights and other exterior lighting in model year (MY) 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 605 reports (for all submission dates) alleging headlight failure. The complaints indicate failures of both low beam headlights typically while driving, a defect condition that was evaluated under a prior ODI investigation (PE08066). Most consumer VOQs indicate that the headlights failed suddenly and without warning leaving the driver with no forward lighting, however some report the headlights flickered or dimmed prior to turning off. In some cases drivers were able to turn the headlights back on after a period of time while others reported the headlights would not come back on at all.

Ford partnering with MIT, Stanford on autonomous vehicle research

Fri, 24 Jan 2014

Ask any car engineer what's the biggest variable in achieving fuel economy targets, and he'll tell you "the driver." If one human can't understand human driving behavior enough to be certain about an innocuous number like miles per gallon, how is an autonomous car supposed to figure out what hundreds of other drivers are going to do in the course of a day? Ford has enlisted the help of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to find out.
Starting with the automated Fusion Hybrid introduced in December, MIT will be developing algorithms that driverless cars can use to "predict actions of other vehicles and pedestrians" and objects within the three-dimensional map provided by its four LIDAR sensors.
The Stanford team will research how to extend the 'vision' of that LIDAR array beyond obstructions while driving, analogous to the way a driver uses the entire width of a lane to see what's ahead of a larger vehicle in front. Ford says it wants to "provide the vehicle with common sense" as part of its Blueprint for Mobility, preparing for an autonomous world from 2025 and beyond.
