This was my dream car; I like most Thunderbirds but especially like the '70 and '71 for that unique and distinctive Bunkie beak nose! I searched for a few years and in 2009 finally found one in decent shape with low miles from the estate of the original owner, an elderly Michigan woman. Unfortunately she stopped driving 13 years before and just parked it in her garage; it only had 69,000 miles then. When I got it, it barely drove and was in need of lots of basic maintenance.  I'm selling because I blew out my lower back and since this car is very low to the ground, it is hard for me to get in and out. I've got over $7k in it; would like at least $5k (buy it now).

The car is sound and you can drive it 70+ mph without worries. Engine starts right up, just a little puff of smoke if it's been sitting for a few weeks otherwise clean exhaust; transmission shifts as it should. Plenty of power from the 370 hp 429 4bbl. Doors, hood, trunk shut with that nice solid thump. Little to no rust anywhere. Interior is nearly perfect. All the gauges, AM radio, fan work fine. Sequential tail signal lights work as they're supposed to. Originally optioned with the front amber running lights.

To get it driveable I did the following:

  • new tires
  • new coil springs front and back
  • most of the dual exhaust, including mufflers, replaced
  • new front suspension upper control arm bushings; otherwise everything else was very good; inspected and packed wheel bearings
  • new brake master cylinder; otherwise front disk and rear drum brakes very good
  • new gas tank, fuel gauge sending unit, gas lines, filters, rebuilt choke and 4 bbl carb (sitting 13 years ruined the whole fuel delivery system)
  • new points, plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, coil, battery, alternator, voltage regulator
  • every coolant hose, clamps replaced; flush and new coolant; new thermostat
  • transmission filter and fluids flushed

Other work:

  • I replaced the driver's side taillight lens and the red reflective plastic strip beneath; they were slightly cracked
  • custom Thunderbird floor mats
  • bought but have not installed the weather strips that go between the side windows
  • bought but have not installed 4 new power window motors; I was going to do both projects at the same time

What I think still needs to be done:

  • when I bought the car all 4 power windows worked but slowly; now only the front passenger window works, hence the new electric motors
  • there is a small dent on the roof and the rear bumper's lower dust panel; I wanted to smooth those out, then paint the whole car; paint is ok, has a nice shine but there are a couple of blemishes

How new car shortages may impact your buying experience

Wed, 04 Sep 2013

If you want further proof that the auto industry is bouncing back, look no further than the empty lots and forecourts of your local dealership. According to a story by The Wall Street Journal, continued high demand for mainstream cars is overtaxing automakers' ability to produce enough models. Several dealers interviewed for the story are reporting two-week supplies as opposed to the typical two-month allocations.
With sales expected to hit 1.4 million units when August numbers arrive shortly and incentive spending down to its lowest amount since January, these limited supplies are pushing prices even higher. For example, according to the WSJ, the average price of a Ford Fusion is up past $26,000. Unfortunately, it's difficult for manufacturers to increase production quickly. If it invests in its facilities, as many manufacturers have done, it risks wasting cash if growth suddenly slows. At the same time, the momentum gained over the past several years could be short lived if vehicle supplies continue to dwindle. "Manufacturers are in a precarious situation," notes Karl Brauer, a senior director at Kelley Blue Book.
Low interest rates and a wealth of desirable features are also allowing customers to purchase more expensive vehicles while justifying their higher overall price tags, a situation that is compounding supply shortages. Even now, during the annual end-of-summer clearance season, deals on new vehicles are remarkably difficult to come by. According to the report, the Toyota Corolla is in a self-inflicted state of shortage, as Toyota clears out inventory in anticipation of the new 2014 generation arriving in dealers. Ford's supplies should rebound as Fusion production comes on line at its Flat Rock, Michigan factory. The Chevrolet Impala, Honda Odyssey, Civic, and Accord and Subaru Forester are also facing shortages.

Barrett-Jackson 2014: First production 2015 Ford Mustang earns $300k for JDRF [w/video]

Sat, 18 Jan 2014

We've almost become immune to the huge dollar amounts that collectible cars earn for charity at Barrett-Jackson. To wit, $300,000 for the first production 2015 Ford Mustang initially didn't seem like very much money. In reality, though, it's probably about 10 times the actual asking price for the car, and we're pleased to report that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
According to Ford, the car's winning bidder will get to "choose a fastback with manual or automatic transmission, and any interior, exterior and stripe color combination offered by Ford on the all-new Mustang." Power will come from a slightly revised version of the well-known 5.0-liter V8 engine that will produce "more than 420hp and 396 pound-feet of torque."
We snapped live images of the 2015 Mustang prototype that Ford had on display here at Barrett-Jackson, and you can check them out above. The official auction description, along with a video of the auction as it happened live, is below.

Ford updates Power Stroke diesel V8, strengthens F-450, tweaks King Ranch

Thu, 26 Sep 2013

Ford is giving its F-Series Super Duty trucks some upgrades for 2015, and we're happy to say that one of them is an improved Power Stroke diesel V8. Also, Ford is strengthening the top-of-the-line F-450 to handle more abuse. And if wild west-style luxury is your thing, the automaker has performed minor cosmetic updates to its King Ranch Edition trucks, as well.
The turbocharged 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 is currently rated at 400 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque, and Ford only tells us the new and improved Power Stroke can "produce power beyond today's" engine. What, then, did Ford actually improve upon? First, the Blue Oval swapped in a new, larger turbocharger. The new Garrett GT37 turbine unit is 72.5 millimeters in diameter, eclipsing the old GT32's 64-mm diameter piece. Ford states output increases with the new turbo setup, but since the new turbocharger operates at a lower peak pressure than the old one, the automaker was able to eliminate the wastegate system and reduce the engine's complexity. Ford even redesigned the turbo's oil and cooling lines to make the powerplant simpler. A byproduct of the larger turbo is better engine exhaust braking, which is controlled manually by a button on the dashboard.
Ford claims the upgraded diesel engine is more powerful, more robust, more efficient and more refined than before.
