Chip Ganassi Racing switches to the Ford EcoBoost-powered Riley Daytona Prototype
Wed, 06 Nov 2013Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) announced yesterday at Ford's SEMA press conference that it will field a Ford-Riley Daytona Prototype with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the 2014 United SportsCar Championship (USCC). CGRFS is the second team to commit to the new Ford-Riley car, behind Michael Shank Racing (which has already used the racecar to break a 26-year-old top-speed record at Daytona International Speedway).
"Over the last 10 seasons we have been able to experience a great deal of success in Grand-Am," Chip Ganassi says, "and now with the dawn of the new United SportsCar Championship we feel that Ford power will be a key ingredient to writing the next chapter of our sports car program."
In the last Grand-Am season, CGRFS raced a BMW-Riley Daytona Prototype. The team has won seven Daytona Prototype championships, all in the past ten years. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas return as the team's prototype co-drivers, and will attend their maiden race in the Ford-Riley at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January.
California Man Reunited 33 Years Later With Thunderbird
Wed, Sep 3 2014A California man was at a loss for words when he was reunited with his prized 1964 Ford Thunderbird on Tuesday, 33 years after it was stolen from a bar parking lot. Gary Chartrand could hardly believe how well his old Thunderbird held up in the last three decades. The odometer had only added about 1,000 miles from when he last saw the car back in the 1980s. "A few bumps and bruises but boy, not much changed," Chartrand told KOVR. Chartrand bought the car as a present to himself after finalizing his divorce from his wife of 10 years in 1981. It disappeared one night from the parking lot of a Sacramento bar where he was working. Police found Chartrand's car 750 miles north in Washington State. As difficult as it is to write this, I was actually excited about the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid. With the beautiful looks of the newest midsize fighter from Ford and a fuel economy estimate capable of shaming even the stalwart Camry Hybrid, the battery-augmented four-door seemed like a recipe for unabashed success. But appearances love nothing more than swapping our boundless enthusiasm for cold platters of disappointment. The 2013 Fusion Hybrid gets hobbled right out of the gate with a lofty price tag, and real-world driving keeps the sedan from even approaching those EPA figures.
With so many excellent midsize hybrids on the market, is there any reason to consider the newest Fusion Hybrid? Are sharp aesthetics, a well-executed interior and capable driving dynamics enough to overcome the machine's shortfalls? Not from where I'm standing.
