Here are the factory preview specs when the vehicle was being released:

SLP's first ever Ford model, the '03 Thunderbolt, takes a competent but bland "contractor special" and manages to confect, via flashy paint, well-executed ground effects and a dollop of performance enhancers, a high-impact compact truck that will definitely appeal to the growing crowd of muscle/sport/custom truck enthusiasts. The full-sized F-150 Lightning now has a worthy little brother.
Thunderbolt mods begin with the cosmetic: a cool but non-functional hood scoop that looks a lot like the one on the Mustang Bullitt GT, a new front fascia with built-in recesses for driving/fog lights, body-color side cladding and a rear roll pan, plus a soft tonneau cover for the bed and your choice of rear lip spoiler. A lockable hard tonneau cover can be ordered, as well as 16-inch Tremor wheels with Bridgestone Desert Dueler tires.

If you'd like more joy underfoot, step up to the available free-flow air intake system complemented by a dual outlet exhaust system ending in classy twin pipes that actually look like real twin pipes, not just cheap chrome shells over the ratty stock exhaust pipes. SLP also notched cut-outs into the custom rear roll pan for the exhaust tips, which jut outward with just enough menace to be cool without going over the top (as on teenager-modified Honda Civics with those absurdly oversized "sewer pipe" exhaust tips).

The Stage II and Stage III intake and exhaust mods boost the power of the Ranger Thunderbolt's optional 4.0-liter six by about 15 to 222 all told, and the base 3.0-liter V-6 to 160, an eight-percent improvement. While this truck is not a rocket ship like the Lightning is, it's definitely got more gumption than a factory-stock Ranger — enough that you can feel the difference when you punch it, especially as the tach swings toward redline and the deeper breathing made possible by the SLP system becomes noticeable both audibly, as well as in the seat of your pants.

Bear in mind that the Thunderbolt is a two-wheel-drive-only vehicle and rides lower to the ground on performance-type tires, so keep it in the garage when it snows. But on dry pavement, the Thunderbolt is amazingly and gratifyingly grippy for a truck — noticeably more tenacious going around a tight corner than a regular 2WD Ranger, and much less apt to fishtail like a just-landed sea bass. SLP credits the much-meatier16-inch tires and the presence of a beefy rear stabilizer bar for the gains in stability.

A test mule/prototype that could become an '04 model was on hand that was dropped down a couple of inches over the stock Ranger as well as the '03 Thunderbolt — and which probably handles even better (we didn't get to drive that one).

Truck adventure

Finally there's the Chevy Adventure, SLP's idea of what the Chevy Blazer could and should be. A great many people probably don't realize the tried-and-true Blazer is still being produced, what with the new but confusingly named TrailBlazer (and GMC Envoy) having been introduced last year. But the Blazer isn't going away for at least a year or two, and SLP decided to see what could be done to enhance the existing package.

As with the other SLP vehicles, the functional improvements center around better breathing —the free-flow air box, cat-back dual outlet exhaust, 1.7 ratio (this application) rocker arms and revised pulleys drawing another 35 hp out of the 4.3 liter Vortec V-6 engine, raising its output to 225 from 190. Also available as options are a lowering kit, the Hawk brake pad package, fog lamps, carbon fiber trim, and a neat "Speed Grille" trim insert with a red-and-black painted Chevy bow tie symbol.

Final retail pricing of the SLP upgrades for 2003 has not been formally announced, and the vehicles themselves don't go on sale until September 1, but expect the tab for the base SLP package to run about $1,900. Order the whole enchilada — Stage 3 performance enhancements and all — and it'll be around $3500 on top of the base price of the vehicle itself.

As in the past, SLP includes its own three-year/36,000 mile warranty that "mirrors" the factory coverage. And as with the Camaro SS and Firebird Firehawk, there's no complicated rigamarole or secret handshake. Just click off the SLP options you want on the order blank and the dealer will take care of the rest for you.

2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost flogged and analyzed by Ignition

Mon, 13 Oct 2014

Aside from the way it looks and perhaps its independent rear suspension, the biggest bit of news on the 2015 Mustang may be the inclusion of its 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That blown mill marks the first time since the Mustang SVO of the '80s that a turbo has been fitted under the engine of Ford's pony car.
The Mustang EcoBoost is the subject of the latest episode of Ignition from Motor Trend, giving us a great look at the technical, nitty-gritty side of the turbocharged coupe. Covering it from bow to stern, host Carlos Lago walks us through the boosted Ford before taking to the track for some driving impressions, with particular praise given to the low-end grunt of the 2.3-liter mill.
Check out the full video and then let us know which 2015 Mustang has your interest piqued the most - the EcoBoost four, the 5.0L V8 or the entry-level V6.

Ford fights back against patent trolls

Fri, Feb 13 2015

Some people are just awful. Some organizations are just as awful. And when those people join those organizations, we get stories like this one, where Ford has spent the past several years combatting so-called patent trolls. According to Automotive News, these malicious organizations have filed over a dozen lawsuits against the company since 2012. They work by purchasing patents, only to later accuse companies of misusing intellectual property, despite the fact that the so-called patent assertion companies never actually, you know, do anything with said intellectual property. AN reports that both Hyundai and Toyota have been victimized by these companies, with the former forced to pay $11.5 million to a company called Clear With Computers. Toyota, meanwhile, settled with Paice LLC, over its hybrid tech. The world's largest automaker agreed to pay $5 million, on top of $98 for every hybrid it sold (if the terms of the deal included each of the roughly 1.5 million hybrids Toyota sold since 2000, the company would have owed $147 million). Including the previous couple of examples, AN reports 107 suits were filed against automakers last year alone. But Ford is taking action to prevent further troubles... kind of. The company has signed on with a firm called RPX, in what sounds strangely like a protection racket. Automakers like Ford pay RPX around $1.5 million each year for access to its catalog of patents, which it spent nearly $1 billion building. "We take the protection and licensing of patented innovations very seriously," Ford told AN via email. "And as many smart businesses are doing, we are taking proactive steps to protect against those seeking patent infringement litigation." What are your thoughts on this? Should this patent business be better managed? Is it reasonable that companies purchase patents only to file suit against the companies that build actual products? Have your say in Comments.
