Frame-up Restoration

I really hate to sell this car.  If it wasn’t for the opportunity to buy a very special car from my brother, I wouldn’t be selling it.  I currently have six cars and I may need to sell two of them to get enough cash for the car I want to buy.

Selling this car means taking a loss.   I’ve got a lot of time (800+ hrs) and money ($30,000+) invested in the restoration of this car. I’ve kept all the receipts (see picture of paperwork folder). The car is mostly original other than the colors (inside and out) and a lot of powder coating underneath, including the frame.  I also had a very nice spray-in bed liner put in so I could occasionally use the car as a utility vehicle, like hauling a Christmas tree.

There’s hardly a nut or bolt on the car that wasn’t replaced or re-plated during the restoration.  I am very detail oriented and tried to deal with every little detail, every nut-n-bolt, all wiring connections,  all the rubber, etc.  I took nearly a hundred pictures during the whole project.  I’ve included a few pictures from the restoration to try to show the level of detail, such as the steering column taken COMPLETELY apart and every part restored.  I’ve restored several cars and I’m currently  restoring a ‘70s British sports car (a Jensen Healey).

The engine was rebuilt by a local speed shop called Hawaii Racing (they‘re on the web). I didn’t have them upgrade the engine for speed, since that usually means giving up some engine vacuum.  Lots of things on the car need that vacuum.  Instead, they put in a better cam.  I also had the engine (carburetor) dyno-tuned.  The carburetor is a Holley Street Avenger (670 cfm) and topped it off with a K&N air filter.  This is a some-what rare engine, the CobraJet version of the 351 Cleveland.  It has an aluminum intake manifold and a “four-bolt main“.  The C6 transmission was also rebuilt, as well as, the A/C compressor.

The car also has the factory tow package which consists of a rear sway bar, trailer wiring, and a trailer hitch.  I’ve replaced the bolt-on trailer hitch with a much nicer welded-on class III hitch (before I had the frame powder coated). In addition, I’ve put on adjustable air shocks in the rear to level the load.

I decided not to restore the car to be completely original since I already had another car that was completely original.  I get a lot of complements on this car every time I take it out.

I restored the car to show quality and I have gotten a couple of trophies over the last several years.  I’ve only put 12,000 miles on the car since I finished the restoration in 2003.  As such, there are a few minor imperfections in the paint now thanks to a pebble or two on the highway.

The stereo is made by Custom Autosound and has a cassette player with a 6 CD changer under the drivers seat with two speakers in the doors and two behind the seats.

I also put in an alarm system that also controls the power door locks and I’ve tinted the windows.  The 16” rims are from Ultra Wheels.  They were also sold under the Edelbrock name for a few years.

The car came with air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and power windows.  The air conditioning system has been converted to R-134.

I also now have a couple of Marti reports on the car which I can provide upon request (to serious bidders).

Regarding the terms of the sale; I will need a $500 deposit within two days of the purchase and the reminder via a wirer transfer before I will sign over the title.

Ford Fiesta rally car warms up in Sweden

Tue, 18 Mar 2014

Rallycross is seeing a sudden surge in popularity with two series bringing the racing to the US and Europe. The Ford OMSE team is competing in both championships this season, and it saw no reason not to hold practice with a highly modified Fiesta in the snow of Northern Sweden. It brought together Andreas Bakkerud from the European-focused FIA World Rallycross Championship and Patrik Sandell from the North American-focused Global Rallycross series for some training and fun. They certainly appear to be enjoying themselves, too, with some lovely pirouettes in the powder.
If you're unfamiliar with rallycross, the discipline combines the best of rallying and circuit racing. Drivers (with no co-drivers) race rally cars over a circuit that generally mixes dirt and asphalt, and unlike traditional rallying, multiple cars compete side-by-side at once. Even better, it's often a very two-fisted form of motorsports with lots of car-to-car contact. Global Rallycross and World Rallycross will both kick off their seasons in May. With spring on the way, scroll down to watch the Fiesta kick up some of the last snow drifts of the year.

Ford patents a multi-touch version of its classic keypad

Fri, Sep 9 2016

For decades, Ford has offered a keypad on the doors of their cars that would allow owners access with the right code. Amazingly, the keypad has survived almost unchanged except for a recent touch button version. A new patent from the Blue Oval shows the keypad may get a big upgrade soon. The first big change is that it looks like the keypad may move to the key fob. Although it might be possible to have it on the car itself as well, the patent only seems to focus on the key fob. In addition, the fob will now be a multi-touch pad similar to that of modern smartphones. This will allow for more diverse code entries, according to the patent's description. Instead of just a simple number code, owners could enter a code that involves swipes and keystrokes, and even simultaneous keystrokes. For instance, you could enter a code that requires swiping from 1 to 3, followed by holding 2 and 4 to unlock the car. The patent also seems to indicate that this keypad would then display unlock functions and other functions on the fob after the correct code is entered, thus making it more than just a way to unlock the car. As for the practical implications of this keypad system update, it could provide an added layer of security. If someone steals your keys, they would have to also know your access code to get into the car. Whether this would also help make the key and car harder to hack would remain to be seen, though. Another possible benefit could be the prevention of accidental lock and alarm button presses, although that likely isn't a common issue. There could be potential downsides as well. If used as an extra layer of security, the legitimate owner would have to punch in their code on the fob to get in, which would render proximity key benefits relatively useless. Moving the keypad to the fob would also mean owners couldn't get into their cars without having the key with them. We don't have any clues as to when this could become a feature, but it doesn't seem like it would be difficult to implement, so it could show up in the next few years. 2014 Ford Fiesta ST priced from $21,400* [w/poll]

Tue, 26 Feb 2013

The 2014 model year brings a whole host of changes to Ford's Fiesta B-Segment fighter, the most important of which (to our enthusiast eyes, anyway) is the addition of a potent new ST model. The US-spec hot hatch was first shown at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show last November, and thanks to Ford's build-and-price site, we've now learned that the Fiesta ST will slide in at $21,400 when it goes on sale later this year (*not including $795 for destination).
Under the hood of the ST is a turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost inline-four good for 197 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque, mated solely to a six-speed manual transmission. Ford hasn't released performance data on its pint-sized puncher just yet, but know that these numbers make the Fiesta ST ever-so-slightly more powerful than the larger Volkswagen GTI while returning an estimated 34 miles per gallon on the highway.
Elsewhere in the lineup, the standard Fiesta also gets a smattering of improvements for the 2014 model year, including a new 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine and revised exterior styling. Pricing for the 2014 Fiesta sedan starts at $14,000, with the five-door model adding $600 to that number (again excluding the $795 destination fee).
