Engine Specifications
The 1993 Cobra came with a modified 5.0L engine with GT-40 heads and GT-40 cast aluminum intake manifold along with
a new camshaft. Here are some specs for this engine:
Cylinder heads:
GT-40 heads previously sold by Ford Motorsports SVO with 1.84 intake and 1.54 exhaust valves. Heads were milled
from 64cc down to 62.5 cc to raise the compression ratio a bit although the official compression ratio is 9.0:1 and
were topped off with a set of Crane 1.7 ratio full roller rockers. Heads used a pedestal type of mounting system
for the rockers. Part number for the cylinder heads is F3ZZ-6049-B up till 04/13/93 and F4ZZ-6049-B after date
04/13/93
Camshaft:
Ford designed a new camshaft grind to bring back some of the low end torque that was now lost using these higher
flowing cylinder heads. Part number for the cam is F3ZE-6250-CA. Specs are as follows:
Intake/Exhaust duration in degrees of crankshaft rotation: 270/270 and at 0.050 lift 209/209
Intake/Exhaust lift at valve with 1.7 rocker ratio: 0.479/0.479"
Lobe separation is 118.3 degrees with 115 intake lobe center and a 121.5 exhaust lobe center.
Timing events at 0.050 lift are:
Intake: (BTDC):-10.5 / (ABDC): 39.5
Exhaust: (BBDC): 46.0 / (ATDC): -17.0

Ford, Renault have surprises in store for Le Mans
Tue, Jun 9 2015All those prototype and GT racers won't be the only attraction catching our eye at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend. Two major automakers have also confirmed that they've got new metal to unveil. And while they're not saying exactly what they'll be, we've got some pretty good ideas. First up is Ford, which has announced a "major Ford Performance news announcement" on Friday. Chairman Bill Ford, CEO Mark Fields, and product development chief Raj Nair will be on hand for the announcement set to take place on Friday at 10:00 AM Eastern. The Blue Oval isn't saying just what it has in store, but the widespread speculation has been that it will present a racing version of the new Ford GT at Le Mans a good half century since the original GT40 raced there. Meanwhile, Renault has announced that it is marking the 60th anniversary of the Alpine marque at Le Mans this Saturday. The French automaker has been working on reviving the dormant marque, and looks poised to finally reveal its new sports car at its iconic home endurance race this weekend. Tipped to be called the Alpine AS1, the new sports car will bring the marque back out of retirement in a more real way than the ELMS-winning LMP2 prototype ever could. Expect it to be based on the mid-engined chassis underpinning the Renault RS 01 spec racer, but built for the road. Ford Green Zone works magic with GPS to make your drive smarter, cleaner
Fri, Aug 29 2014For the most part, plug-in hybrids rely on the power stored in the battery until that charge is depleted. Unless the switch can be changed manually, it's only then that the cars fire up the internal combustion engine and begin using the fossil fuels on board. This is ideal, of course, when one's drive isn't long enough that the car needs to start sipping gasoline at all. On longer commutes, when it's certain that the route is longer than the car's all-electric range, this isn't necessarily the most efficient use of energy. Ford's Green Zone system is designed to save some of that juice for the parts of the drive that require slower speeds. Ford is working on a smart system, based on Nokia mapping technology, that uses GPS data to use both the electricity and conventional fuel more efficiently. Since battery power is less efficient at highway speeds, Ford's Green Zone system is designed to save some of that juice for the parts of the drive that require slower speeds, rather than just using up all the electrons right at the beginning of the drive. Using a website or the in-car navigation system, the driver can pinpoint the parts of the route, highlighted in green, where using battery power would be more effective, and set the car to automatically switch to electricity for those sections. Depending on the route, the car could automatically switch back and forth between the two power sources multiple times, particularly if the drive is a mix between city and highway driving. Of course, Green Zone will be go beyond that. The program is being developed to take traffic and road grade into account, details that allow the car to be make even smarter choices to improve efficiency. Ford even hopes to have Green Zone learn driver habits, and respond accordingly depending on who is driving the car. The system could control other features as well, such as anticipating corners and shifting the headlights to better illuminate the road ahead. Green Zone could also potentially use information from vehicle-to-vehicle networking to control functions in the car. The Green Zone system still has a few years before it will be ready to be put into production vehicles, but Ford is confident it will make its way onto the road eventually. As with other innovations that improve efficiency and make our vehicles smarter, we can expect to see similar technology from other manufacturers, until it becomes a regular part of driving in the future.
