1930 170B Model A Ford Fordor Blind Back  2-Window Project

I have a project that originated from a barn in White Earth, North Dakota (the original owners). I picked up this Model A as the second owner and it is now registered and titled in Arizona to the VIN on the frame. I even have a restored 1930 Arizona Mohave County license plate on it, which can go with the vehicle if you want it.

The 1930 Ford Model A 170B two-window blind back is actually a very rare version of the vehicle. It still has an original eyebrow fender, which is only found on 1930 models produced before February. The original VIN on the frame indicates that the engine was produced in November 1929, which is typical for the Model As, as there was usually an 8 to 10 week period between engine production and complete assembly. There are also other indicators of an early 1930 Model A, besides the eyebrow fender (which is rare in itself), as some of the original hardware is from the 1929 style (such as the door handles). Again, this was typical as they would run the existing stock out at the end of the year before they moved to using the new stocks.

This vehicle was in a fire at some point in its past and there is a bullet hole in it, which you may want to keep for conversational purposes...

The vehicle is complete and almost everything to restore it can be purchased new from a number of suppliers (such as MACs Antique Auto Parts). The fenders will need some work, and might need to be replaced, depending on how much effort you want to put into them. We were just going to replace them and have a friend do the metal work on the fender for the original eyebrow style.

The vehicle is currently in two pieces, as we were about to begin the restoration and have just not had the time or the money to continue it. The following is a list of additional parts for the vehicle.

  • 1930 Model A 170B Fordor Two-Window Blind Back complete body and frame
  • Brand new wood kit (complete, still in original Ford Wood factory boxes $4,500)
  • Brand new tires and tubes
  • 8 extra wheels (the original wheels on the car were mixed between 19" and 21")

  • Two extra engines, one is ready to go
  • Extra steering wheel

Hyundai, BMW and Ford win Concept Vehicle of the Year awards

Sat, 06 Jul 2013

More than two dozen jurors started with a pool of 23 concept cars introduced at the most recent Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and New York auto shows, then pared it down to three winners in three categories for the twelfth annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards. The trophy-bearers are said to be those "vehicles most likely to shape the future of the automobile industry," and lead their classes in the Concept Car, Concept Truck and Production Preview divisions.
Hyundai had two cars as finalists for the Concept Car category, the competition boiled down to the Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis concept, Veloster C3 Roll Top, Honda EV-STER and the Toyota Corolla Furia. It won with the HCD-14 Genesis that was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show, a sharp sedan that sharply divided opinion between those who thought it was too much, those who thought it was too much Audi A7, and those who thought it was perfect. The award panel's judges, however, thought so much of it that it's got two awards in one sitting, not only taking concept car honors, but because it earned the highest overall score in the competition it also takes the crown for Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2013.
The final selection in the Concept Truck category was down to the Ford Atlas, Kia Cross GT, Nissan Resonance and Volkswagen Cross Blue. The Ford Atlas took the silverware, after also winning the Eyes on Design award - shared with the Nissan Resonance - at the Detroit Auto Show where it was introduced.

Detroit 3 and UAW set for showdown over tiered wages

Mon, Mar 23 2015

This week, thousands of United Auto Workers will converge on Cobo Center in Detroit for the Special Convention on Collective Bargaining, an every-four-year event that lets members tell UAW leaders what the negotiating priorities should be during contract negotiations. This is where a lot of sand and a lot of lines start coming together in preparation for contract negotiations between the UAW and the Detroit 3 automakers, which will happen later this year. Number one on the UAW agenda is the end of the two-tier wage system created in 2007 to help the automakers get through bankruptcy; veteran workers are paid the Tier 1 rate of around $29.00 per hour, new hires are paid the Tier 2 rate of between $15 and $20 and get about half the benefits of Tier 1. Tier 2 hiring has been an undoubted success for the automakers, allowing them to keep factories in the US and hire more workers. By agreement, it is capped at a certain percentage of each automaker's workforce, and while the union's ultimate position is to get rid of the dual-scale system entirely; one leader said Ford could easily afford the $335 million it would take to convert all its workers to Tier 1 out of its $6.9 billion in 2014 North American profit, and General Motors could do the same out of the $5 billion it is handing to investors through the (admittedly forced) share buyback. Other delegates say that at the very least they'd be happy with enforcement of the current caps in the new contract. The automakers, conversely, would welcome expansion of the Tier 2 ranks. Including benefits, import automakers pay workers "in the high $40 range" per hour, according to an analyst, while Ford and GM pay about $59 in wages and benefits per hour. More Tier 2 workers on the rolls would let those two companies get labor cost parity with the competition. Fiat-Chrysler pays wages closer to the imports because of special exceptions in its UAW contract that allow unlimited Tier 2 hiring; those exceptions will end on September 14 and bring FCA into line with the other domestics, unless the new contract maintains them. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne is opposed to the two-tier system, having called it "almost offensive." One analyst says the UAW might win a sizable pay raise for Tier 2 and a small increase for Tier 1, but the keystone issue will be how the hiring matrix can help the automakers keep overall wages in line with the imports.

Galpin Ford GTR1 supercar debuts in Monterey

Fri, 16 Aug 2013

Galpin Auto Sports has finally taken the wraps off the car we first previewed back in December, the Galpin Ford GTR1. A few weeks ago, we posted the first hints of just what the GTR1 would be capable of, with Galpin teasing that its 5.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 would produce in excess of 1000 horsepower, with a top speed of 225 miles per hour. Package all that in a coachbuilt body, and you have the recipe for one wicked supercar.
The price for the carbon fiber-bodied car is $1,024,000.
Now, we have all the glorious details. Galpin is targeting a production run of six cars, but if interest is strong enough, will expand its initial quote to 24 vehicles. The price for the carbon fiber-bodied car is $1,024,000. Opting for the aluminum bodywork could lower that, although it's not immediately clear by how much.
