1972 Ford Galaxie 500 in fairly decent condition for its age, runs smooth and is NOT smoking.

The car is an unmolested and unmodified original with working factory Air Conditioning.  The only non-original part of the car is the radio and 3rd brake light in the rear window.  This is NOT a show car and is not restored, but is a good looking car for its age that is not filled with bondo or mismatched parts - this can be made into a driver without a tremendous amount of time and cost.  This is a car that you can fix to either drive, restore or you can strip for parts if you choose.

I don't know too much about Fords as far as production or desirability of this car, but if I were to find a similar condition Chevelle or Nova, I would be happy to find it in this good condition.  What I can tell you about the car, erring on the side of caution, so I am presenting as honest as possible and pointing out anything negative that I noted:
  • Car seems to have the original 351W in it with 2BBL carb. with most of everything from the factory still there (some electrical wires aren't connected to anything in particular though);
  • Car runs smooth, but I have not driven it far, other than up and down the road about 1/4 mile;
  • The Air Conditioner surprisingly (at least to me) works;
  • The Interior is in really nice shape, with only the small tears on the drivers side of the front seat as seen in the picture;
  • Car appears to have been repainted or touched up in spots (right front fender has some cracks in the paint);
  • The car looks a lot better in the pictures than it does up close:
  • - the paint is not perfect, it is faded, has discoloration
  • - there are spots of surface rust, there is a a rust hole over the passenger side rear quarter dog leg;
  • - the lower part of the drivers side quarter panel has a rust hole and metal is thin from rust on the back side;
  • - the hood has rust holes in spots and seems to need a new hood;
  •  - there are some small dings and dents in the fenders and quarter panels, but body is overall straight.
  •  - the vinyl top is torn in many places;
  • - the gas tank had a pinhole in it (found when I put some gas in it), so I prepped around the area and epoxyed the hole and surrounding area and the gas stopped leaking, not sure if that is a permanent fix or not, but have done it too both a fuel tank and oil pan on one of my tractors and it has held for several years now).
The car has not been licensed or inspected since 2001, so it has been sitting for some time.  I got the car about 4 years ago and towed it to the farm and it has sat behind the barn since then.  After fixing the above noted gas tank issue, I took the carb. off, cleaned out the nasty gas, cleaned the jets and venturi holes, then put it back on.  I poured some gas in the tank, dumped some transmission fluid down the intake, installed a battery, and started cranking.  I cranked for a while, then sprayed carb. cleaner down the intake.  It fired, sputtered, and then finally ran on its own.  I ran it at idle for about 30 minutes, then drove it around.  The brake are touchy, the rear tires spin easy, and the car is over 5,000lbs, so it is big.

Feel free to call me or email me with questions.  Car will be for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if the car sells before the auction is over.  Thanks for looking.

American automakers fall in latest Fortune 500 rankings

Fri, 10 May 2013

Not that it means anything beyond bragging rights, but if you're fixated on the positions of domestic automakers on the annual Fortune 500 list, both General Motors and Ford are still on it but they've slipped a couple of notches. The list ranks American companies and they're ordered solely by revenue. GM, fifth last year, came in seventh, while Ford fell from ninth to tenth even though both companies saw small gains in annual revenue.
GM's $152.3 billion in revenue was less than a third of that of the first company on the list: Wal-Mart, which regained the title from Exxon Mobil. Berkshire Hathaway and Apple are the firms that moved GM down. Ford, displaced by energy company Valero, had $134.3 billion in revenue.
On a side note, profitability isn't a factor, but both GM and Ford were down in this year's list compared to last year's: GM declined from $9.2 billion to $6.2 billion, Ford fell from $20.2 billion to $5.6 billion. If profits were included, Exxon Mobil would probably still be king: although the energy company made almost $20 billion less in revenue than Wal-Mart's $469.2 billion, it posted $44.9 billion in profit compared to Wal-Mart's $17 billion.

EPA says fuel economy test for hybrids is accurate

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

The EPA says it stands behind its fuel economy test for hybrid vehicles following controversy about the testing process after Ford C-Max Hybrid customers and automotive journalists alike struggled to achieve 47 miles per gallon, the advertised mpg number, Automotive News reports. Ford responded to the issue almost two weeks ago by claiming that a 1970s-era EPA general label rule was responsible for the inaccurate mileage numbers, rerating the C-Max Hybrid's mpg numbers and offering customers rebates. Ford later said it didn't overstate the C-Max Hybrid's fuel economy and that it was surprised by the low numbers.
Ford technically didn't do anything wrong because it was following the general label rule, but agency regulator Christopher Grundler says the automaker was exploiting a loophole when it came up with the hybrid C-Max numbers, and that the testing process remains accurate. The general label rule allows vehicles that use the same engine and transmission and are in the same weight class to share fuel economy numbers, but it doesn't take into account other factors such as aerodynamic efficiency, which affects hybrids more drastically than non-hybrid vehicles. Ford originally used the Fusion Hybrid economy figures for the C-Max Hybrid and claimed the engineers didn't realize that its aerodynamic efficiency would affect fuel economy as much as it did.

'Blood Muscle' auction to sell impressive collection of ill-begotten classic cars

Wed, 30 Jul 2014

The old saying goes that if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. But being a criminal can involve more than just taking a trip to the big house; it can also mean losing possessions purchased from any ill-gotten gains. Still, one man's loss is another's gain, and if you're in Lodi, NJ, on September 12, you stand the chance to buy some of the ultimate muscle cars from the US Marshals in what is being gruesomely nicknamed the Blood Muscle auction.
The grisly moniker was earned because all of the vehicles belonged to the president of a blood testing company who is facing prison time for alleged bribery, according to Hemmings. After all, they are muscle cars bought with actual blood money. The seven-vehicle collection includes some of the ultimate muscle cars ever made, and the original buyer clearly had an eye for rarity.
This cornucopia of V8 power includes a teal 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429, a 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang, an orange 1970 Plymouth Superbird, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible and perhaps most prized of all - a trio of 1969 Yenko Chevys with a Chevelle, Nova and Camaro all represented. From the included photos, all of them look to be in fantastic condition.
