1967 Fairlane 500 2 Door Hardtop on 2040-cars

1967 Fairlane 500, 2 door hardtop. 289 Auto. I will describe this car as best as possible, but please keep in mind that it is a 47 year old car. I have had this car since 1979. I have sold it twice to friends through the years, one who drove it a short while and the other who never drove it, but kept it stored inside for many years with no engine or trans. I got it back again a few years ago, installed a used engine and transmission and drove it around a bit before storing it again.

The original 289 2bbl, C4 transmission and 8-inch rear end were in the car when I got it in 1979 but as a teenager, they didn't last long. It then had another small-block and 4-speed installed by me. The clutch/brake pedal ass'y was removed from a Fairlane wagon and installed in this car, and is still in the car. Only half of the clutch linkage is still there. The current engine is a 289/302 2bbl, stock. It has used 1993 Mustang 5.0 factory headers and used 1987 Mustang GT mufflers. Stock single point ignition. New spark plugs. Autolite 2bbl carb. Cast iron Ford intake. Stock internals. New fuel pump and hoses/lines. This engine was removed some time ago from an early Mustang. It is a 289/302, but I didn't bother to run the casting numbers to verify block and heads etc. It runs fine. Cooling system is good, it doesn't overheat. Stock Ford radiator and fan. It has new hoses, thermostat, etc.

The transmission (and converter) is a used C6 from a 1969 Ranchero. It is a small-block C6, which is a bit more heavy-duty than a C4, as you may know. Stock column shift. The rear end is a 9-inch removed from a 1967 Fairlane 390 GT parts car and installed by me, with new leaf springs/bushings/shocks and u-bolts, back in the early eighties. I dont remember the gear ratio, but it is in the low 3.00 range. Stock gears.

The car was painted in 1981 locally, and had minimal rust repaired at that time. A few of the body panels were swapped from a parts car only because the paint/body guy thought they were better than what was on there, and the original passenger door was dented. The original rear bumper was rechromed also, and is still in great shape. The front bumper is original and has not been rechromed, but is in good condition. All the factory trim, emblems and lettering is present and in good shape. I do not remember what paint he used other than it was enamel, based on 1976 Corvette yellow. It was painted this color because I was/am a big fan of American Graffiti, and loved Milner's '32 5-window coupe.

The original factory color of the car was Lime Gold.

The interior was black when new, and still has the original front bench seat which was reupholstered in black vinyl, similar to stock, years ago. It is still in great shape. The rear seat and front door panels were taken from the GT parts car, and remain in place today. The rear interior panels are original. Newer carpet from Auto Krafters was installed years ago also, but is not the correct closed-loop style. Dash is original, with slight cracking beginning. Headliner material is removed and I never got around to replacing it, but all bows are in position. Stock steering wheel. Instrument panel is stock, showing 25,675 miles, which was all that was on the car when I got it in 1979. That is what the owner told me, and he was only the second owner and had not had it that long. The speedo and odometer have not worked since then as when I swapped the 4-speed trans, I didnt have the right parts to hook up the speedo and I think it needs a new cable, and didnt get around to fixing it.

It probably has around 50,000 miles on it now but who knows. I am not describing this car as low mileage.

The gauges work as well as the blue "cold" temp light, which goes off properly when it warms up. The stock AM radio works but is scratchy.

All glass is intact and all 4 windows roll up and down ok. Wipers work.

Door and trunk locks work. Lights all work. Battery and starter good. Keyswitch works properly.

Brakes are stock drum front and rear and were always good, but were redone by me back in 1997 with new wheel cylinders, hardware and brake shoes. Parking brake works too.

I converted it to manual steering years ago by removing all the leaky power steering parts and installing the correct manual steering center link. It steers fine.

This car can be driven anywhere, but would strongly recommend trailering it due to winter weather, and the heater core isnt hooked up. It currently has a set of old 14" Magnum wheels and BF Goodrich bias ply tires. Just what we had in storage. The Cragar S/S wheels in the pictures are not included.

Also the fuel tank will need to be cleaned as I have installed an inline clear filter twice and it gets partially clogged after a while. Just hadn't gotten around to that yet.

This Fairlane is being sold to help pay for a restoration on my wife's 1968 F100, and since I dont drive it much anyway. We will need the garage space for her truck.

This car can be driven as-is or restored; up to you. It will need some TLC of course, and the trans is a bit moody/hesitates in "drive" when cold sometimes but is ok when warmed up after a minute. It then upshifts/downshifts just fine then. The choke is also unhooked, and the fuel tank cleaning issue will need to be addressed.

Body/paint and rust-wise, it is showing some small spots of rust and bubbling, and it will need some repair in the trunk dropoffs and the front floorpans are showing small holes but was cleaned and sprayed years ago with rust-mort, and resealed. It is not a rusted out car, it is structurally strong and the shock towers etc are all good.

The paint has faded in storage, but a good rubbing and waxing will bring it back to be presentable and shiny until you can repaint it. There are some spots where the paint has flaked off etc. It is not a show-winning finish.

I have spoken to the original owner's son last year, who learned to drive in this car, and he confirmed that it has also been to Hawaii when his dad was in the service, and returned to Michigan. Other than that the car has always been here within a 30 mile radius since new. He couldn't believe the car still existed. A lot of neat stories and history will come with this car if you would like.

Again, it is an old car that needs work, but would make a great first car/project car just like it did for me years ago.

Yes, I know it is not in perfect condition, but if it were, the price would be a many, many times higher.

The pictures show it thru the years, and the first picture was right after I removed the engine back in the late nineties. The car wash picture, the picture in front of the barn with the old Magnum wheels, and the engine being installed pictures are current.

You are welcome to come and inspect this vehicle before bidding, but only with prior arrangements being made. I am firm on my starting price.

It is being sold as is. Price reflects condition. No trades please, and please feel free to email me with any questions. All I ask is that if you are interested, please be serious and certain before contacting me or bidding. If you dont have any feedback or a low feedback score then I reserve the right to cancel your bid unless you contact me. Car is known to be for sale locally also, but once someone bids on this online auction then it will finish the auction, as there is no reserve price.

Thank you for looking and bid with confidence!

eBay Find of the Day: 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra prototype

Wed, 08 May 2013

Over the last decade or so, competition in NASCAR has led to some pretty funky looking racecars. And when the sport was still up and coming, the tight competition actually led to some interesting production cars. The Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird are perhaps the most well-known cars of the sport's "aero wars" era but the Ford Torino King Cobra might have been the most memorable of all, if not for some different homologation rules established in 1970. The Torino King Cobra never made it to production and never competed in NASCAR, but three examples exist including this one now for sale on eBay.
Designed as a successor for the aero-tuned Torino Talladega, the Torino King Cobra has a sleeker front end with hidden headlights and a sloped nose. As the story goes, NASCAR made a rule change in 1970 requiring 3,000 of the vehicles to be produced, which was substantially more than the 500 units required by the previous rule. One of the three prototypes ever built - and the only one built with the Boss 429 engine - is now for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $500,000. With a little more than three days left on the auction there are still no bids, but in the grand scheme of things this seems like a relatively fair price for a rare piece of automobile and racing history.

2015 Ford Mustang fuel economy ratings leaked

Thu, 21 Aug 2014

Thinking about buying a new Mustang, but want to know what kind of fuel economy it'll get? Well we have our first indication as the pony-car enthusiasts over at Mustang6G.com have gotten a hold of the Monroney window stickers for a few of the new 2015 Mustang models.
Although the V8 model is not among them, we can now see how the EPA has rated those models with a half dozen pistons or less. The Mustang EcoBoost with the turbo four and a manual transmission has been rated at 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. The V6 manual gets 17 city and 28 highway, while the V6 automatic squeezes out a bit more in the city at 19 mpg but carries the same 28 highway rating.
By way of comparison, the latest Chevy Camaro with the V6 and a stick shift gets the same 17/28 EPA rating as a similarly equipped new 'Stang, and the V6 automatic Camaro gets 18/27 (slightly behind the Ford, but if you opt for the Camaro 2LS with its V6, automatic and 2.92 rear axle ratio, you'll be looking at 19 and 30).
