Model Overview Like the regular-duty F-150, Ford's Super Duty F-250 and F-350 are available in a very wide range of configurations for 2008, with three cab styles--regular, SuperCab and Crew Cab--and two bed lengths.Three different engines are offered on the Super Duty trucks, too. A 5.4L V8 making 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque is standard, and for heavier duty there is either the 6.8L V10, with 362 horsepower and 457 lb-ft, or the 6.0L 'Power Stroke' turbo-diesel V8, making 325 horsepower and 570 lb-ft. Each engine is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The turbodiesel is a new-generation engine that uses dual-sequential turbochargers to help improve low-end performance and high-pressure common-rail fuel injection to help reduce emissions; emissions numbers are on par with competing gasoline engines, according to Ford. With either the diesel or V10, the Super Duty can tow up to 15,000 using a conventional trailer hitch. The F-350 is available with a dual-rear-wheel (DRW, or "dually") setup that allows better stability for towing the heaviest trailers, and there's also an available TowCommand system, which includes a unique trailer-braking strategy that works in conjunction with the Super Duty's anti-lock braking system when it detects poor traction. The Super Duty has a fully boxed front frame section, and Ford claims to use the thickest-gauge steel of any pickup in its frame. The Super Duty models have a more upright appearance compared with the standard-duty F-150, especially at the front. The front end is more squared-off, with an upright grille that borrows some elements of its appearance from big rigs.Regular cab and SuperCab versions of the F-250 and F-350 can be specified with four-wheel drive, but the Crew Cab comes only with rear-wheel drive. Both come in XL, XLT, and Lariat trims, with the Lariat including a luxurious premium leather interior, automatic climate control, and many comfort and convenience features including adjustable pedals.A newly available rearview camera system, mounted within the rearview mirror, activates when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, using a camera mounted onto the tailgate to help guide drivers in tight-clearance situations. Green lines help guide the driver, marking the width of the vehicle, and they turn red as the truck gets too close to a barrier or object. Another standout feature is the PowerScope power-folding, power-telescoping mirrors, which include a spotter mirror and extend outward an additional 2.75 inches as space permits. Setting for the mirror system are integrated with the seat- and pedal-memory system. There are also several special appearance packages. The King Ranch brings unique wheels, Arizona Beige trim, and an interior with Chaparral leather plus other additional luxury and interior appearance items. The Lariat Highline Edition adds chrome trim throughout, including on the billet-style grille, tubular step bars, tow hooks, exhaust tip, and instrument trim. Captain's chairs and black leather upholstery bring the interior a different look. There's also a Lariat Outlaw Package, which comes with a monotone black exterior with red tape stripe; inside the black theme continues with black and red leather-trimmed captain's chairs.

Chicago Auto Show: The really big reveals from shows past
Fri, Feb 9 2024The 2024 Chicago Auto Show may seem like a shell of its former self, but it still holds the title of the largest consumer auto show in the United States. It didn't get that reputation simply by being efficiently produced or convenient for locals desperate for something to do in February — it earned it over decades of breaking automotive news and powerhouse reveals, eventually earning an informal designation as America's truck show. 2024 may be a down year for Chicago, but let's not forget all of the great things that have come out of it, historically. Here's a look at some of our staff favorites. Bet you didn't know about a few of these cars that were first revealed in the Windy City.  2008 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 I didn't just pick this one as a former Challenger owner, but instead to illustrate just how many cool Chicago debuts we take for granted. Chrysler often chose its home turf to debut new cars, so the few times its unveilings happened elsewhere tend to stick in our minds. The first Challenger SRT-8 was kind of garbage, if we're being honest. I mean, who buys a race-bred, V8-powered muscle car without a limited-slip differential? But the SRT-8 formula evolved over time into something truly special, and what we saw in Chicago was essentially the early version of the Scat Pack, which was ultimately very successful for Dodge. And who would have thought we'd be here, 15 years later, still talking about that debut? And still loving these big Mopars, flaws and all. — Associate Editor Byron Hurd SHO time in Chicago IÂ’ll always have a certain fondness for the return of the Taurus SHO at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. Chicago has always leaned truck and van heavy for press reveals, but every now and then, as this list illustrates, something spicy would appear. The return of the SHO as a high-powered successor to the original that ran from 1989-1999 gave enthusiasts hope for FordÂ’s performance business, especially for sedans. With a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 packing 365 hp, all-wheel drive and five-spoke wheels, the SHO was a nice upgrade from the lower-rung Taurus models. It was a bit more sedate than the original SHOÂ’s Yamaha-sourced V6 that teamed with a five-speed manual transmission, but still a worthy response to the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and later the Chevy SS. The SHO — Super High Output — begat things like the Fusion ST and gave Ford solid four-door performance for the rest of the decade.
Which of these high-powered pickup classics would you choose?
Fri, Apr 17 2020High-performance pickups would appear to be having a moment on the auction site Bring a Trailer, with two tempting examples up for auction right now: a 1971 Ford Ranchero GT and a 1991 GMC Syclone. These trucks are a generation apart, but they each represent the peak muscle truck of their time. The Ranchero, of course, was Ford's car-based pickup, and Ford took advantage of its Torino roots by offering the same ultra-high-performance 429 Cobra Jet V8 in the Ranchero as it did in the Torino-branded coupes and convertibles. The 429 V8 in this truck is said to be numbers-matching, and it looks the business topped with an air scoop poking through the hood. It's paired with a three-speed automatic and a limited slip differential, reportedly one of only 82 1971-model Rancheros with this powertrain combo. As a Ranchero GT, this example sports hidden headlights, and the dual sport mirrors and vinyl top further establish its kinship with its passenger-car siblings. A set of factory Magnum 500 wheels and a respray in the original red add to the muscle-truck vibe. Two decades later, car-based pickups were dead, so when GMC decided to revive the muscle-truck genre it did so with the mid-size Sonoma. The resulting Syclone put a more modern spin on the fast-pickup idea (and on the spelling of "cyclone"). This hi-po hauler uses a 4.3-liter V6 topped with a Mitsubishi turbocharger that helped it make 280 horsepower. It's mated to a floor-shifted four-speed automatic and a Borg-Warner all-wheel-drive system with a 35/65 torque split. The Syclone was a one-year-only model, of which just under 3,000 were built. All were black with matching cloth seats with red accents. The only other '71 Ranchero to appear on BaT was a non-original GT with a 351ci V8 that was a no-sale at $7,900. This Ranchero is already nearly double that figure. Of the four previously Syclones that have crossed BaT's virtual auction block, two have sold, for $36,000 and $50,000, but both had lower miles than this truck. At this writing, these two trucks are neck-and-neck, both in the mid teens with both auctions set to end April 23. Which powerhouse pickup makes you want to put your money down? 2015 Ford Mustang will tell authorities how you crashed and if you were belted [w/video]
Sat, 28 Jun 2014When the 2015 Ford Mustang hits dealers, it will be with a new batch of features that will power up Sync's 911 Assist feature, and provide an even greater degree of information to first responders in the event of an accident.
911 Assist will already make a phone call, via a Bluetooth-connected phone, should you bin your car. The automatic message to first responders is a pre-recorded blurb from Ford. With the new enhancements, though, emergency personnel can learn about the maximum change in velocity and whether the crash involved a front, rear, side or a rollover impact. 911 Assist will also send information about how many seat belts were in use and if airbags deployed, allowing more accurate dispatch of resources.
"Sync will only broadcast relevant information to save time, and it constructs a very efficient message for the operator," said David Hatton, the global project leader with Ford Connected Services. "After the introductory message, the voice line opens automatically and occupants can speak directly with the operator via Sync's hands-free functionality."
