Behold the behemoth of Heavy Duty Hauling:  The truck we lovingly call "Obi Wan Kenobi."

This 1997 Heavy Duty F-250 is the hard-to find Short Bed Crew Cab version, and it has been updated with an Air Ride load leveling air bag kit.  This kit cleverly connects between the leaf spring perch and the hitch in the rear, meaning you can dial in this truck to sit perfectly straight under just about any load.  I towed a 25' Airstream like it wasn't there.  I hauled a cabover camper while towing a trailer with my rock crawler:  No bounce, no jounce.  It's the perfect tow vehicle.  It's also the perfect construction hauler.  I've used this truck for more than a few trips to the dump with construction debris, instead of hiring trash removal services.  The truck paid for itself in 6 trips on one construction job!  Need to get construction materials like pavers or bricks?  This dude will take a 2000 lbs palette straight from a fork lift and then beg for more!

On the outside, this truck looks like it's been through Hell and Back.  It is obvious that nobody has every cared for the appearane of this beast.  There's dings, scratches and dents on every body panel. The interior is... "trucky," with some vinyl cracks and a few stains here and there in the fabric upholstery.  No tears though.  But overall, it's rough and ready, just the way I like it, and just the way the prior owner liked it also.  I prefer a truck that I can USE without fear.  Frankly, I thought I would have killed this rig a long time ago, but like a Russian character out of an Action flick, this Heavy Duty Ford is exactly that: Heavy Friggin' Duty!

The BAD:
The front differential ran out of lubricant, and broke some teeth two days after i got the truck 3 years ago.  The front hubs are now disengaged and the front drive shaft has been removed, and the truck is a 4x2 until this is fixed.  I never really needed 4x4.  But I have purchased a replacement 4:01 front pumpkin that will be included in the auction, and it should cost around $350 to install it at your local 4x4 shop.  If you're handy and have the right tools, you can do this job yourself in about half a day.

Rear passenger door window crank motor is shot, or might need wiring repair.

Rear door lock solenoids are sticky and need more than one push of the button sometimes to lock/unlock.

Dash pad has vinyl scratches and gouges.  There is a statue of Obi-Wan Kenobi glued rather crudely onto the dashboard.  He glares at the passenger of this rig at all times.

The GOOD
Mechanically, this truck is quite sound, with only 133,000 miles (and counting) on it.
The E4OD transmission seems to have been rebuilt, it shifts quite firmly without a load, and just right under load.
The 460/7.5L engine fires up every time and runs smoothly.  Pulls like all 460s:  Hard.   I've had it tuned up real good last year, and it passes smog easily, with new plugs, MAF sensor and cleaned injectors.

Tow package with an extra HD transmission cooler.

New brake pads all around, two new front calipers, and front alignment: $1500

Warn front lock out hubs.

Pre-wired to accept a Six Pac Cabover Camper electrical plug.  Also comes with custom tie-down points for cabover campers on the bed.  Just paid $400 to have all the wiring done properly last Thanksgiving.

Brand new BF Goodrich Rough Terrain tires all around, which cost me close to $1000 installed last week.

New Battery installed last fall.

New Heater Core element installed last year.   AC and Heater work as new.

SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, NO WARRANTY, NO SHIPPING.  This rig is also listed locally, so I reserve the right to end this listing early, so bid often and early!

Do the math:  This truck has $1000 in new tires, and $1500 in brakes in the last 5000 miles.  Bidding starts at $2000 with no reserve.  Enough said.

I have a perfect feedback rating so far as a seller, and I intend to keep it that way.  What you see is what you get.  This is a rough and ready work truck, nothing more, nothing less.

I bought it to tow my Airstream trailer, my Rock Crawler, and to do some construction hauling.  It's paid for itself on the hauling alone, and it's time for me to upgrade to a more... refined travel vehicle for my wife/kids. But whoever picks this beast up for work... Obi-Wan won't let you down.

Clear title.  No back fees.  Full tank of gas.  Go!

Good luck bidding.

Ford will build Hackmobile out of Transit Connect Wagon

Fri, 27 Dec 2013

What you see in the above image is a rendering of the Hackmobile Transit Connect Wagon. What is that? It's a "mobile fabrication and hacking unit" that includes tools for metal- and woodworking, 3D and electronics fabrication, a three-axis CNC machine called "The Fabber," a video projector and screen, an air compressor, an 84x48-inch work surface that folds out like a Murphy bed and oh so much more. When not in use, all of the implements fold neatly into the back of Ford's award-winning van.
But perhaps the more important question is why is that? Because Make Magazine held an Ultimate Maker Vehicle Challenge in conjunction with Ford in which ten teams created were charged with creating "the ultimate Ford Transit Connect Wagon for the do-it-yourself enthusiast." Team Twin Cities Maker won the competition with the Hackmobile, and in addition to winning $10,000, Ford has declared it's actually going to build the thing - which is great, because if they can actually engineer a road-legal Hackmobile Transit Connect Wagon as envisioned, the inevitable A-Team movie reboot might need to think about including it.
Check out the video below for a cheeky walk-through of the Hackmobile, and get all the particulars in the press release below that.

2015 Ford Mustang earns Five Stars from NHTSA [w/video]

Fri, Feb 13 2015

We already know that the latest Ford Mustang is a pretty potent pony car in terms of its performance potential, but according to the government, it's a safe choice too. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released its New Car Assessment Program crash test results for the 2015 'Stang coupe, and it came away with top five-star overall ratings in every evaluation. The Mustang received a five-star overall score and five stars for its frontal, side and rollover ratings. The only minor ding was a four-star result just for the backseat in a side barrier crash. According to NHTSA, "Although not included in the star rating, the rear passenger's thoracic rib deflection was elevated." You can check out the full NCAP evaluation, here. According to Ford, the latest Mustang has twice as many airbags and crash sensors as the outgoing model. NHTSA also likes that the pony car offers a rearview camera and forward collision warning – two of the technologies that the agency recommends buyers getting for added safety.
