UP FOR AUCTION IS A 1969 FORD F100 CUSTOM CAB THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR 6 YEARS. TRUCK ORIGINATES FROM ARIZONA. WAS GARAGE KEPT A LONG LENGTH OF TIME BEFORE I BOUGHT IT AND HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT BY ME FOR THE ENTIRE TIME EXCEPT FOR THE LAST 4 MONTHS. BEFORE PLACING TRUCK OUTSIDE I PUT A FACTORY FORD CAMPER SHELL ON IT TO KEEP RAIN OUT. CAP WAS FROM A 73 AND HAS FORD DECAL INSIDE. NEVER DRIVEN IN WINTERS OR RAIN. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK WITH 91XXX MILES. EVERYTHING ON THE TRUCK WORKS AS IT SHOULD, LIGHTS, GAUGES, RADIO, HORN, BACKUP LIGHTS, BLOWER MOTOR, WIPERS, EVEN THE TURN SIGNAL RETURN WORKS. TRUCK IS BONE STOCK ORIGINAL EXCEPT EXHAUST IS DUAL 2 1/2 INCH CUSTOM BENT ALUMINIZED. I WAS TOLD THE TRUCK WAS REPAINTED WHEN IT WAS ABOUT 10 YEARS OLD AND AN NOS FORD HOOD WAS INSTALLED AT THAT TIME. ALSO THE TRUCK CAME ORIGINALLY WITH THE WEST COAST TOW MIRRORS. THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM REMOVED THEM, HAD THE HOLES BONDOED OVER AND PUT THESE STUPID LITTLE EDGE MOUNT BICYCLE LOOKING MIRRORS. I REMOVED THOSE STUPID LITTLE MIRRORS(NO DRILL HOLES WERE USED FOR MOUNTING)AND INSTALLED THE WEST COAST JRS. AS A MECHANIC FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS WAS TO REPLACE ALL 4 WHEEL CYLINDERS. NEXT WAS TIMING CHAIN SET AND FUEL PUMP. I KNEW THERE WOULD BE PIECES OF NYLON FROM THE CAM GEAR IN OIL PAN SO I DROPPED THE PAN CLEANED OUT SUMP AND PAN. WHILE I WAS IN THERE I REPLACED THE OIL PUMP, MAIN BEARINGS AND ROD BEARINGS. I ALSO REBUILT THE CARB AND REPLACED WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT. I USED QUALITY AMERICAN MADE PARTS. ALL PROPER MATCHING ID TAGS ARE ON ENGINE, TRANS, REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND CARB. THIS TRUCK IS A NICE EXAMPLE OF A RUST FREE VINTAGE VEHICLE. I WOULD SAY 98% RUST FREE. I SEE ALOT OF GUYS USE THE TERM RUST FREE AND THERE TRUCK HAS  NO HOLES ON THE COSMETIC SIDE BUT YET THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF BED AND UNDERCARRIAGE IS SCALEY FLAKEY RUST. THIS TRUCK HAS VERTUALLY ZERO RUST IN BED AND UNDERCARRIAGE. UNDERNEATH BATTERY IS SOUND AS A POUND, NO ROT. GUTTER RAIL HAS ZERO RUST. THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVER FENDER IS SHOWING SOME PIN HOLES AND THAT IS THE ONLY SERIOUS RUST. THE DRIVERS DOOR AND FENDER HAVE A MINOR TWEEK. THE HOOD HAS MINOR DENTS. CAB, BED PASSENGERS DOOR, FENDER, BUMPERS ARE STRAIGHT AS A WHISKER EVEN INSIDE OF BED IS DENT FREE. ORIGINALLY HAD A CHROME FRONT BUMPER. I GAVE IT TO A GUY TO REPLATE AND NEVER SEEN HIM AGAIN. NO CRACKS IN WINDSHIELD. ORIGINAL ANTENNA STILL PRESENT. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL GLOVEBOX MANUAL ASLO. INTERIOR WISE SEAT IS NICE BUT THE REST NEEDS ATTENTION. TRUCK IS LISTED ELSEWHERE SO I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO END AUCTION EARLY. PLEASE CALL IF SERIOUS 314-423-5638 AND ALSO YOU CAN COME AND INSPECT FOR YOURSELF. THANK YOU.

I WANT TO ADD SOME INFORMATION THAT I PREVIOUSLY FORGOT. THE PASSENGER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAS A GASKET LEAK. NOTHING UBNOXCIOUS BUT IT'S NOT AS QUIET AS IT SHOULD BE. THE VALVE COVERS LEAK A LITTLE OIL. THE TIRES HAVE GREAT TREAD BUT 2 OF THE TIRES HAVE MINOR DRY CRACKING. UNDERSTAMND THIS IS A 1969 AND THERE'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT NEEDS ATTENTION. ON THE PLUS SIDE ENGINE RUNS STRONG AND DOES NOT SMOKE OR MAKE ANY NOISES. TRANS SHIFTS FINE AND BOTH GAS TANKS WORK AND DO NOT LEAK. ALWAYS HAS GOOD OIL PRESSURE AND RUNS COOL ON THE TEMP GAUGE. THE TRUCK HAS SPARE TIRE, ORIGINAL JACK AND TIRE IRON. I ADVISE ANYONE WHO'S GENUINELY INTERESTED TO CALL WITH QUESTIONS. THIS IS A LARGE PURCHASE AND I WANT THE PERSON WHO BUYS IT TO BE SATISFIED.

Expert: 54.5 mpg CAFE standard can be reached without many plug-ins

Sat, Jan 18 2014

Johnson Controls executive Brian Kesseler isn't likely to get any holiday presents this year from Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn or Tesla Motors head Elon Musk, but lots of other folks might be happy with what he has to say about automakers' efforts to reach stricter fleetwide fuel-economy standards. Speaking at the Automotive News World Congress, Kesseler said automakers wouldn't need to sell an extensive number of plug-in vehicles in order to meet the 54.5 mile per gallon Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard the US government set in 2012 for 2025 model-year vehicles. In fact, he said, components such as stop-start engine technology, turbochargers and direct injection may actually do the trick. Already, things like smaller engine sizes and lighter cars are already playing major roles in spurring fuel-efficiency gains. Of course, Johnson Controls sells batteries specially built for stop-start systems, so Kesseler does have a bit of skin in this game. The 54.5-mpg CAFE standard equates to about a 40-mpg "real world" fuel-efficiency level. To put that into perspective, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said in a report late last year that model-year 2013 average fuel economy was an even 24 mpg. That was up from 23.6 mpg for the 2012 model year and 22.4 mpg for 2011. Junkyard Gem: 1993 Mercury Topaz GS Sedan

Sat, Aug 13 2022

As long as the Mercury brand existed — a period spanning the 1939 through 2011 model years — nearly every Mercury sold in the United States was more or less a redecorated Ford model. The Torino had its Montego sibling, the Crown Victoria had the Grand Marquis, the Cougar was based on everything from the Mustang to the Mondeo, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed the Ford Tempo compact, a Mercury version had to be created. This was the Topaz, with the official launch of both cars taking place on the deck of the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit. You can't make this stuff up! The Tempo/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be much different if Ford had only put the amazing straight-eight "T-Drive" Tempaz powertrain into production) and didn't have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period. As you'd expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I'm patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this means an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive version or at least a very early model in super-clean condition. Today's Junkyard Gem is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no ordinary junkyard Mercury. It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, referring to this stuff as just "cloth" in all the brochures I could find. That's too bad, because Mercurys had cool names for upholstery (e.g., Chromatex) in the old days. The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners. Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we'll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles. The body is very straight, but there's some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.

Lincoln recycling tree fibers into new MKX armrest

Thu, Feb 27 2014

Want to hug a tree, or at least a really small part of one. Then set your arm down on one of those armrests in the 2014 Lincoln MKX crossover. The US automaker is working with Weyerhaeuser and Johnson Controls on a tree-based, cellulose-reinforced polypropylene material used in the component that connects the armrest to the floor console, Wards Auto says. With properties similar to plastic, the tree-based material replaces fiberglass and is about six percent lighter. No big deal for now, but if the material starts getting used for things like battery trays and interior storage covers, that loss in weight may eventually start adding up enough to boost fuel economy a bit, providing a green double bonus. Lincoln parent Ford, which isn't saying how much more (or less?) it costs to use the new material, established its Biomaterials and Plastics Research team in 2001. In 2007, the company began using soy-based foam in car seats used for models such as the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Mustang and has since broadened biomaterials use to components like floormats and cupholder inserts. Ford also used recycled plastic bottles from the 2012 North America International Auto Show for seats in the Focus Electric.
