‘Ford v Ferrari’ Ford GT40 and Ferrari P330 coming to 3 Midwest hot-rod shows

A Ford GT40 and Ferrari P330 that were used in the Oscar-winning blockbuster film “Ford v Ferrari” are going on a tour of the American Midwest, appearing as part of a custom show-car series starting this weekend in Kansas City and later making stops in Detroit and Chicago.  The Detroit Free Press reports that the GT40, in a green-and-white livery adorned with the number 95 on the bonnet and doors, is an original race car developed for the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans, while the P330 was fabricated to spec for the film. The former is owned by 20th Century Studios, while the latter is on loan from a private collector in Minnesota. “People will probably never get a chance to see these again,” Peter Toundas, president of Championship Auto Shows, told the publication. Both cars will make their debuts this weekend at the World of Wheels, which runs from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 21-23, at the Kansas City Convention Center. From there, theyÂ’ll appear at Autorama in Detroit, Feb. 28-March 1, and then make their curtain call at the World of Wheels in Chicago March 6-8 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. "Ford v Ferrari" tells the tale of the 1966 Le Mans race, where Ford famously vanquished Ferrari following years of domination by the Italian sports car maker, and after Enzo Ferrari famously rebuffed Henry Ford IIÂ’s attempt to buy the company. It stars Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as Ken Miles, the British race driver who drove a different GT40 than the one going on tour. Since opening in November with a production budget of $97 million, “Ford v Ferrari” has grossed almost $225 million worldwide as of Feb. 17. Ford wants to double hybrid offerings by 2020

The Blue Oval is looking for folks on the other side of this Big Old Sphere to get on board with its hybrid offerings. Ford executive Raj Nair, speaking at the Detroit Auto Show this week, said the US automaker wants to double the number of hybrids models it offers by the end of the decade, Reuters reports. Details of what that actually means is anyone's guess, as it was unclear how many of those models would be in the US and how many would be overseas. That said, Nair did say that prospective customers in regions such as China and Europe would drive the expansion of offerings. Ford got off to a great start in the US last year on its hybrid sales, but then tailed off towards the end of 2013. Ford more than doubled its green-car sales in 2013 to almost 88,000 units. In that number were more than 37,000 Fusion Hybrids and more than 28,000 C-Max Hybrids sold domestically. The company also sold almost 7,500 Lincoln MKZ Hybrids. Ford's green-car totals for 2013 were up fivefold at the mid-year point, hinting that Ford's hybrid sales plateaued, at least temporarily, in recent months.

Ford To Unveil Solar Hybrid Concept Car At CES

Ford plans to unveil at this month's International CES gadget show a solar-powered concept car that offers the same performance as a plug-in hybrid but without the need for a plug. The C-Max Solar Energi Concept car uses a gasoline engine combined with a gizmo that acts like a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun's rays on the vehicle's roof-mounted solar panels. The automaker says the vehicle's estimated combined city-highway mileage is 100 miles (160 kilometers) per gallon. The U.S. auto maker says that by using solar power instead of an electric plug, a typical owner will reduce their annual greenhouse gas emissions by four metric tons. The company says it sold about 85,000 hybrid or electric vehicles in 2013, including 6,300 units of its C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid. The sun-ray concentrator was developed by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology and uses what is known as a Fresnel lens, which concentrates light but can be made thinner than a conventional lens. A full day of sunshine is equivalent to a four-hour battery charge, or 8 kilowatts, Ford says. On a full charge, it should have a range of 620 miles (997 kilometers), the same as the C-Max Energi. The concept car also comes with a plug-in port for standard electric charging. Ford says that 75 percent of all trips made by an average driver could be powered by the sun. After showing off the concept car at the convention in Las Vegas Jan. 7-10, Ford Motor Co. says that it will test the vehicle with institute researchers to determine if it's feasible for mass production.
