Frequently Asked Questions with Answers

Q:  Why are you selling this van?
A:  I bought it in May 2012, planning on using it to transport students to an after-school tutorial program I was starting (I am a retired teacher).  We also wanted to use it for group overnight and shopping excursions for elderly people, sports teams and other groups.  But my wife had to resign from her job (our primary source of income) because of health reasons, and I didn't have the money to get the tutorial program started.  So we don't need the van.

Q:  Why do you still have the van, almost a year after buying it?
A:  It's such a nice van and I invested so much in it fixing it up for how we wanted to use it (about $2,500) that I hated to give it up.  I kept hoping that I could start some kind of transportation service with it.

Q:  So, why are you selling it now?
A:  I am working 50 hours per week driving a cab and just don't have the time to get anything going with it.  Besides, we don't have the money to keep making payments and paying insurance on it.

Q:  Why does it have about 1,000 more miles on it than when you bought it?
A:  After my wife resigned from her job, we moved three times (from our home in Onalaska to San Marcos then Fredericksburg and finally to Corpus Christi, Texas, looking for work for me (not easy at age 68).

Q:  In what kind of condition are the surface features and appearance of the van?
E:  Excellent.  When we purchased it from Texas Direct Auto in Sanger, TX (a suburb of Houston) the van had a few cosmetic blemishes (a missing cigarette lighter, some broken ceiling air conditioner vents, a couple of small stains on the upholstery), but I fixed all those.  It now has no broken or missing parts or tears or stains in the carpet or upholstery.  The paint is in beautiful condition - no noticeable chips or scratches.  The only two blemishes are a small dent in the right corner of the front bumper (not noticeable unless you look at it closely) and a shallow dent on the lower edge of the body underneath the rear passenger door, just above the running board (also not noticeable unless you look closely - see photo).  Except when we were moving, the van has been in storage or kept covered.  For the past six months, since we arrived in Corpus Christi, it has not been moved and we have kept it covered (see photo).

Q:  How about the structural and mechanical parts of the van?
A:  Again, practically perfect.  We had a Ford master mechanic check all the structural and mechanical components (engine, steering, brakes, wheels, exhaust system and suspension).  He did an OBD2 computer analysis of the engine and a test drive, and reported no defects. He stated: "Engine is strong, starts, runs and performs very good. Transmission shifts very good as well. Transmission fluid is clean.  There is power to it. No abnormal noises from suspension or brakes. Van drives very good. No abnormal exhaust emissions noted at this time. Steering feels tight and responsive to driver input. Vehicle steers and brakes straight. No brake fade or pulsation noted at anytime during duration of test drive."  From the time we drove the van from the dealer in Sanger to our home in Onalaska, then all around central Texas looking for employment (a little over 1,000 miles), it ran great - very smooth with plenty of power.  We pulled a 5X8 utility trailer loaded with a refrigerator and other items up and down the hills of Texas, from San Marcos to Fredericksburg to Corpus Christi, with ease - hardly even noticing that we were pulling anything.

Q:  What sets this van apart as being a better deal than other similar vans for sale on Ebay?
A:  (1) Low mileage (43,380) for a three-year-old van, (2) Beautiful, practically like-new running condition and appearance, (3) Loaded with amenities (separate front and rear air conditioner controls, AM/FM radio, MP3/CD player with 3 sets of speakers and front and rear audio controls, driver controlled power windows and locks, etc.), (4) Extended size 15-passenger van, (5) Extras - running boards and trailer hitch + wiring harness, (6) Four new LT245/75R16 all-weather Nexen Rodian HT tires purchased in Fredericksburg, just before we moved to Corpus, (7) Unbeatable minimum bid asking price for a van this nice.  The van retailed new for over $35,000.  The present NADA Blue Book value for a clean van like this (without the trailer hitch and wiring harness) is $19,500.  Considering what we have put into the van (about $2,500 in repairs, maintenance and extras plus a down payment, taxes, registration and 11 months of payments and insurance), we will have to take a big loss, but we really need to sell it.  We are asking for only what we owe on the van plus a little extra to cover the cost of this Ebay ad.

We are asking a $200 immediate deposit and the balance of the winning bid (cash or cashier's check) when the van is picked up at our home in Corpus Christi, Texas.  When the van is picked up, we will issue the purchaser a bill of sale and mail the title to the purchaser (overnight delivery) as soon as we pay the van off and receive the title from our Credit Union.

Questions?  Please feel free to contact me through the Ask (the Seller) a Question link.  Or, you are welcome to check the van out in person or have an independent inspection done.  Just contact me so that we can arrange for time and location.

NHTSA closes book on Ford, GM probes of 600,000 vehicles

Thu, Nov 27 2014

US safety regulators have closed a pair of investigations into some 500,000 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Marauder sedans built between 2004 to 2007, and 100,000 Chevrolet Impala models from 2014. The Ford investigation focused on rusting heat shields, which may become dislodged and jam the steering, according to Reuters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that this happened very rarely. In fact, of the ten incidents filed with the government safety watchdog, six came from a single police department, which evidently had some sort of problem with its reporting. As for the Impala, the NHTSA investigators attributed two incidences of "unintended autonomous braking" to user error. In both cases, the vehicles were involved in rear-end collisions. According to GM investigators, it's believed that drivers accidentally activated the electric parking brake, causing the collisions. The vehicles in question were rental cars. 2016 Ford Focus RS mule spotted on US soil

Tue, 17 Jun 2014

Okay Ford, this is what we like to see. One of our intrepid spy photographers has captured a vehicle that we weren't even sure would see the light of day - the next Focus RS. While this is pretty clearly a mule based on the current Focus ST, as our spy points out, there are a number of giveaways about this hot hatch's true nature.
Indication number one that all is not right with this Focus is the heavily camo'd front fascia, which has been completely reconfigured for duty on the RS. It boasts significantly larger grilles that are meant to accommodate what is likely the 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder that's destined for the 2015 Ford Mustang. Considering that, then, we can expect around 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque from the hottest of Foci, although it's entirely possible that the production model could climb even higher, to around 330 hp.
The front fascia tweaks are complemented in the back by a modified rear bumper, which fails at hiding a pair of exhaust tips quite unlike the standard Focus ST's center-exit exhaust. Other obvious changes include the wheel/tire/brake package on this particular car. Larger 19-inch wheels are shod in super-sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires in 235/35/19 while the brakes feature what we think are four-piston calipers, possibly from Brembo, up front.

Automotive Grade Linux will be the backbone of your connected car

Fri, Jan 6 2017

Creating a backend for a secure, reliable, and expandable infotainment system is costly and time consuming. The Linux Foundation, a non-profit organization, has set out to promote and advance the Linux operating system in commercial products. Automotive Grade Linux, or AGL, is a group within the Foundation that seeks to apply a Linux backend to a number of automotive applications in a variety of vehicles from various suppliers and manufacturers. AGL's goal is to create a common, unifying framework that allows developers and manufacturers to easily implement applications across platforms. Currently, the focus is on infotainment systems, but AGL has plans for instrument clusters, heads-up displays, and eventually active safety software. At CES, a display from Panasonic showed a completely digital and customizable dashboard that allows information and apps to be moved from the gauge cluster to the infotainment screen and back, all through the use of gesture and touch controls. Although the organization has been around for five years, it's really only been in the past three that the group has been working hand in hand with automakers and suppliers. The first two OEMs to participate, Toyota and Jaguar Land Rover, have since been joined by Mazda, Suzuki, Ford, and, as of this week, Daimler. The latter is important as until now most of AGL's partner's have been based in Japan or the US. Other partners include suppliers Denso, Renesas, Continental, Qualcomm, and Intel. AGL want's to supply roughly 80 percent of the backend, allowing partners to then finish and refine the Linux system for each individual application. Think of how the Android operating system is refined and customized for individual smartphones from Samsung, LG, and Motorola. While the final product looks different, developers can have an application that will work across all AGL systems. Because it is open source, anyone can use and develop for AGL. You can even go onto the group's website and download a copy right now. There is also a software development kit available that helps facilitate app creation on the platform. Vehicle development cycles take roughly five years, so there currently are no cars that run an AGL backbone available for consumers. AGL Executive Director Dan Cauchy says products should be hitting the market later this year, with even more coming in 2018. Right now, the industry is relatively fragmented when it comes to infotainment and related systems.
