This is a nice low miles 1996 Ford Bronco XLT. It has spent a good part of it's life in Arkansas and Missouri. It is very solid mechanically, cosmetically and structurally.

Exterior:
It doesn't appear to have had any paint work or panels replaced, and looks better than other 96 Broncos or even other 17 year old vehicles in general.  The photos show the Bronco, just washed with no wax. The rear bumper has no bends or major dings and has a good shine to it. The front bumper is straight, but slightly skewed on the mounts, and has a few spots where the chrome is dull. The tires are brand new (still have nipples on them) 32" x 11.5" x 15" with OEM steel wheels. The drivers side has a small spot of rust behind the back fender which is shown in the photo. The passenger side has two small rust spots with are also shown in the photos. There is NO other rust on the body including under the tailgate (which is a common rust spot on Broncos). I do not have the exterior key only the ignition key. The drivers side mirror has a crack on the lens, but it really comes down to preference on it if bothers you as the driver and needs to be replaced.

Mechanically:
There's no smoke, leaks, or drips under the vehicle and it doesn't burn oil. The vehicle has great power from the bigger 351 V8 and shifts very smooth. The steering is very solid and holds to the road well. The ride is very smooth and solid, and represents the mileage very well. Surprisingly is has a great tone with the muffler having been removed with a straight pipe in its place, but the catalytic converters are still installed, so it sounds much like a 2 or 3-chamber muffler... nothing obnoxious. The push button 4x4 engages just as it should in both 4H and 4L.

Interior:
The seats are in very good condition and only have a few minor spots where the surface is coming off on the drivers seat. There are no major spots on the carpet including in the back cargo area. The radio is an aftermarket CD-player with a USD hook-up. The speakers are little to be desired and could probably use a replacement. There's one small crack on the dash, which can be seen in the photos. The temp gauge does not work on the dash, and the previous owner installed a functioning gauge under the dash. There is a speaker box in the back that runs up to the front CD-player, and it appears to only be using the in-dash amp rather than an external amp. The front headliner is dropping a little and the drivers side sun-visor has some damage from what appears to be garage doors openers resting on it over the years. The rear headliner is in good condition. All windows work as they should including the rear window.

If you're looking for one that hasn't been a mud toy and ragged out, then this is the one to get. With very little effort and money, this vehicle could be more than just a daily driver. These are getting very hard to find in this condition. You can maintain one, but you can remove the miles... this one has both the low miles and great condition going for it. Please understand that it a 17 year old vehicle. I tried to disclose everything I have seen and know of, but don't assume anything... please, please, please ask if you have specific questions or need more photos.

Thanks and best of luck!!!

The big dune jump and the damage done

Mon, 20 May 2013

The Silver Lake sand dunes see their fair share of well-built trophy trucks executing impressive jumps. Drivers build insane pieces of machinery for the express purpose of sailing through the air like mad men and women.
Mike Higgins is no stranger to the area. His heavily modified Ford trophy truck has gone flying through the sky on more than one occasion, but he recently bit off more than he could chew. After hitting a particularly lofty dune, Higgins went airborne for a ridiculous 180 feet before becoming intimately familiar with the finer points of gravity.
While Higgins nailed the jump, his landing fell short of wowing the judges. The impact very nearly broke his truck in two. Despite the mechanical mayhem, the driver walked away without a scratch, proving that occasionally miracles really do happen. You can check out the jump and the subsequent destruction below for yourself. Be warned: there's a fair bit of foul language.

Weekly Recap: Toyota propels hydrogen fuel cells

Sat, Jan 10 2015

Toyota is serious about hydrogen fuel cells, and it wants the auto industry to follow suit. The Japanese automaker said this week it's releasing 5,680 fuel cell patents from around the world, including technologies used on its upcoming sedan, the 2016 Mirai. The move is unusual, but not unprecedented, as Tesla similarly released its electric vehicle patents last year. The idea for Tesla, and now for Toyota, is to spur development of alternative propulsion. "By eliminating traditional corporate boundaries, we can speed the development of new technologies and move into the future of mobility more quickly, effectively and economically," said Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales senior vice president of automotive operations, in a statement. Toyota's fuel cell patents will be free to use through 2020, though patents related to producing and selling hydrogen will remain open forever. Toyota said it would like companies that use its patents to share their own hydrogen patents, but won't require it. "What Toyota's doing is really a logical move, and really a good move for the industry," Devin Lindsay, principal powertrain analyst with IHS Automotive, told Autoblog. The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It comes as Toyota prepares to launch the hydrogen-powered Mirai in a limited number late this year in California. The launch will be extended to the Northeastern United States next year. Toyota also has announced plans to support networks of fueling stations in each region to try to smooth consumer adoption. The Mirai has a 300-mile range on a tank of hydrogen, and it takes about five minutes to refill. Fuel cells have been receiving increased attention recently, and Audi and Volkswagen debuted hydrogen-powered cars at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Honda, another proponent of the technology, also showed its updated FCV concept in November in Japan. The company, however, has delayed its fuel cell sedan a year until 2016. Like Toyota, Honda says its hydrogen-powered car will have a range of 300 miles or more. Meanwhile, Hyundai currently offers leases for fuel-cell powered Tucsons, which have a 265-mile range, in Southern California. Despite the optimism some automakers have for fuel cells, the technology still faces barriers. A lack of filling stations has long held it back, and many consumers are not familiar with the potential benefits.

2020 Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator reportedly facing numerous QC issues

Mon, Sep 16 2019

A lengthy report in the Detroit Free Press delves into a range of quality control issues confronting the 2020 Ford Explorer and its luxury platform sibling, the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. Freep says it's been following the issue for two months, tapping various unnamed sources for information on the automaker's unorthodox route to resolution. Seems the problem is Explorers and Aviators leaving the production line at the Chicago Assembly Plant with flaws in areas like the chassis, transmission and suspension, said vehicles trucked to Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant (FRAP) outside of Detroit for repair. The estimates range from 10,000 to 18,000 vehicles affected, numbers so high that Ford has sought help from Roush Engineering in nearby Allen Park, and brought workers and managers from other plants in the Midwest to FRAP to get vehicles repaired and shipped to dealers. Ford hasn't shared the nature of the problems with anyone outside the company, including dealers and customers. Freep's sources are said to include workers who have provided photos of certain vehicles and of tents used to house parts at the FRAP repair site. The Explorer chassis allegedly has an unidentified problem that engineers are using X-rays to diagnose, and the transmission is having problems sensing when it's in park or going into park. Both the Explorer and Aviator have come off the line with HVAC units that only blow hot air. And the Aviator's height-adjustable suspension enters failure mode for unknown reasons. These come on top of quotidian mishaps common to every new vehicle, but that are meant to be sorted in pre-production, like missing emblems and trim pieces. They also come on top of a recall in early August issued for the Explorer and Aviator concerning the instrument cluster and parking brake, and another at the end of August over rear seatbacks that could collapse in a crash. An automaker spokesperson told Freep, "Making updates to preproduction models based on all-new platforms as they roll off the assembly line – is standard industry practice." Except these aren't pre-production, these are early production vehicles that paying customers and dealers are waiting for, and some of the affected vehicles have been pulled off dealer lots. Dealers say they are fine waiting for the trucks to get sorted out, and they'd rather have Ford fix the problems before the SUVs go to customers.
