Ford introduced the Explorer option package for the Bronco in 1973.  The Explorer package included unique exterior colors and special, unique interior treatments, automatic transmission and power steering.  The color and interior pattern scream mid 70's style.

1973 Ford Bronco Explorer in good original unrestored condition.  Next to impossible to find a Burnt Orange Explorer that is mostly original and unrestored.  Never cut or lifted or altered in any major way.  Truck lived most all its life with one owner at an Idaho lake house.

Exterior shows mostly original paint.  It has assorted bumps, bruises, and scars that only serve to add character.  This truck has a very nice patina throughout.  This one has not had its soul removed by the restoration shop and if you are one of the fortunate it will speak to you.  The paint is certainly not anywhere near perfect or excellent but it is good enough that it would be unfortunate if the truck was repainted.  To some of us this one looks better than the newly restored, shiny example, and this one is certainly more difficult to duplicate.  The exterior looks about as it should for an old truck.  No evidence of any rust.  Hole in left rear fender where CB antenna was once mounted.  Has new road tires and a G78 Firestone Town and Country spare mounted on the original, optional swing away tire carrier.  Glass is all good.

Interior is in very nice original unrestored condition.  Couple of small tears in the driver seat vinyl that is not conspicuous.   Original orange explorer fabric still shows very vibrant color, and it still has the original floor liner.  The rear cargo area sheetmetal has been repainted.  Gauges, wipers, lights, radio, latches, window winders, seat belts all functional.

Mechanically in good condition.  Starts, runs, steers, stops as it should.  Lift the hood and the engine looks like a time warp.  Engine looks as it should with nice original finishes and appropiate patina.  Still has most all the factory labels, decals and ink stamps.  Most of the engine compartment components are the factory original items.  Battery is new.  Has the usual oil leaks but does not smoke or burn oil or make any unusual noises.  Factory automatic transmission shifts as it should.  The brake system is new with an added vacuum power booster.  Like most of the drum brake broncos, this one requires a lot of pedal pressure to make it stop.

Chassis is in good condition without signs of damage or significant rust.  Rubber parts show their age but function fine.  New main tank fuel sender, new fuel lines and new fuel pump.  Optional auxiliary tank and the associated switches and fuel gauge all work.

My name is Gary, I have owned the truck for a few years and am selling because I have too many vintage cars and need to simplify a little.  If need be I can be reached at 225 892-8425.

Diesel Power finds the ultimate modified oil-burner

Sat, 24 Aug 2013

For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.
What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.
You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"

Ford not backing down on MPG-based marketing strategy

Thu, Jun 26 2014

The Blue Oval may have to back off a bit from the green messaging. Ford has had to lower fuel-economy ratings on a number of 2013 and 2014 model-year vehicles, namely its hybrids. And that may force the US automaker to rethink some of its marketing strategy, Automotive News reports. Ford has spent much of the year pushing its fuel-efficiency improvements, with everything from a Super Bowl ad saying its Fusion Hybrid gets "almost double" the fuel efficiency of an average vehicle (after the recalculation, it's now more like 75 percent better) to claiming the Fiesta is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid in the US (it's actually the Mitsubishi Mirage) to stating the C-Max Hybrid gets better fuel economy than the Toyota Prius V (it doesn't). Nonetheless, Ford doesn't plan on changing its mpg marketing emphasis anytime soon, the company said in an e-mailed statement to AutoblogGreen. "Providing customers great fuel economy is a key part of our Ford vehicle DNA." "Providing customers great fuel economy is a key part of our Ford vehicle DNA," the company said. "We will continue to highlight our vehicles features and attributes in our advertising and marketing, which includes fuel economy and fuel-saving technologies like EcoBoost and hybrids." Earlier this month, Ford said it would lower the fuel-economy ratings of models such as the C-Max, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ Hybrids as well as most of the Fiesta line because of mistakes in the company's internal testing data. It was the second change for the C-Max Hybrid. The good news for Ford is that its fleetwide fuel economy is up almost 40 percent from a decade ago, compared to an improvement of around 23 percent for Toyota. Still, while sales of Ford hybrids and plug-ins are about even with last year through the first five months of 2014, C-Max Hybrid sales have plunged 49 percent from a year earlier. Earlier this year, Ford admitted that the first fuel economy downgrade had a negative effect on sales and we can find proof in the numbers. Before that the change was announced, in August 2013, Ford was consistently selling over 2,000 – and sometimes over 3,000 – C-Max Hybrids a month. In September, it dropped to 1,424, then to 1,438 in October. It didn't climb back above 2,000 until May 2014. The second mpg adjustment was announced in June.

Ford tumbles to second worst in Consumer Reports reliability survey, list dominated by Japanese [w/video]

Mon, 29 Oct 2012

It's no secret that MyFord Touch has had its share of problems since being introduced, but the most recent reliability survey from Consumer Reports shows just how much this infotainment system has affected Ford. Just two years ago, the automaker was in the top 10 for the institute's reliability rankings, but since then, it has tumbled to the second-lowest rung just above dead-last Jaguar. In addition to MyFord Touch, CR also attributes a handful of new products that have had issues right out of the gate.
Compiled from 1.2 million subscriber surveys, this year's auto reliability survey heavily favors Japanese automakers, with eight of the 10 spots hailing from Japan. Toyota brands grabbed the top three spots (Scion, Toyota and Lexus - in that order) with Mazda, Subaru, Honda and Acura filling the next four spots. The only non-Asian automaker cracking the top 10 was Audi at number eight.
Audi climbed a total of 18 spots from last year, and Cadillac and GMC round out this year's top gainers breaking into the top 15. Helping Cadillac's upward movement, the CTS Coupe was named the most reliable domestic car. Lincoln, Volvo and Chrysler join Ford on this year's biggest loser list.
