Made To Compete With Corvette 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 on 2040-cars
Waterville, Ohio, United States
IS PROUD TO PRESENT... A PARTIALLY RESTORED AND VERY SOLID 10TH ANNIVERSARY 1965 THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE! Want a super cool V8 convertible that’s ready to cruise this summer? How about one with some of the best vintage styling ever draped over two doors and four tires? If the answer is a resounding “YES”, this 1965 Ford Thunderbird is exactly the car you’ve been searching for! With the original Thunderbird 390 V8 and automatic transmission, this car is the perfect classic for anyone who enjoys getting fresh air and exploring the open road. If you’re looking to add a little spice to your weekend routine, here’s the perfect way to take Sunday drives to a whole new level! Solid and straight, this T-bird’s lust-inducing body reflects a picturesque coat of glossy Burgundy paint over black interior that creates a rich and classy demeanor. From its glossy shine to its chip-free rocker panels, the paint’s deep finish is nice enough to be the star at any local cruise night, and certainly nicer than the car’s original, factory-applied Honey Yellow. Naturally, a star of that caliber requires top notch panel fit; and it appears the folks who bolted this Ford together spent a lot of time making sure its laser straight body maintained excellent cohesion. And overall, the car is a stunning tribute to one of the coolest designs to ever fly out of Dearborn, Michigan 50 years ago this September! The Thunderbird was Ford’s response to
Chevrolet’s crude Corvette. And when introduced in 1955, it outsold
Chevy’s unrefined halo by 24 to 1. Part of the reason for that big
success was the car’s versatile mix of American substance and European
aesthetics. Tilt this Ford’s mile long hood
up and you’ll find the original 390 cubic inch Thunderbird V8 that’s dressed to impress. Nice enough to show but still fully
drivable, this is the perfect compromise for enthusiasts who like to
display their car and still enjoy the occasional top-down weekend. Behind the aforementioned 390, a stalwart automatic Cruise-O-Matic transmission sends power to the original factory 3.00 to 1 ratio rear end. The car’s suspension remains in its original configuration with control arms up front and leafs out back. All of the chassis’ s front end safety parts were replaced and a new dual exhaust ensures the integrity and sound that a true "Big Block Bird" is known for. Power front disc braking is quick and adequate thanks to fresh hardware occupying all for corners of the suspension. And on the outside of those new brakes, 4 new radial whitewall tires surround classy chrome hub caps, slightly hidden behind a set of famous Ford Thunderbird skirts. Burgundy paint is legendary for its characteristically 60's feel. And when paired with this Thunderbird’s correct Black interior, it creates the perfect culmination of style and sophistication. While appearing original, its interior is still in good condition and as such, livable for years to come. There’s relatively new carpet throughout that features clean loops. Front and center, a translucent speedometer, "bubble gauges, and cool original radio look great inside a stainless-trimmed and Thunderbird-branded dash. In front of the driver, a Thunderbird "slide-away" steering wheel, complete with rim around a chrome, Thunderbird-branded center ring. Between the bucket seats sports a chrome laden console that accents the "cockpit" perfectly. At the sides of the passengers, scuff-free door panels center perfectly placed armrests below engine-turned trim. And behind the car’s retracted top, a fully restored trunk hangs an old school jack between a new mat and correct deck lid decal. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Ford guy, Mopar guy or Chevy guy, this impressive Thunderbird is one of those cool cars that transcends barriers and has universal appeal. The car’s great looks, great performance, and great color combo all add up to an exceptional classic that can be driven and enjoyed every day of the summer. Indulge as is, or tinker with it to make it sharper, either way you’ll have a high value cruiser that has unmatched curb appeal and the muscle to back up its good looks. Is it time for American carmakers to give up on dual-clutch transmissions? [w/poll]
Mon, 22 Jul 2013Last week, in the midst of Detroit's first days seeking relief in Chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code, Automotive News contributor Larry P. Vellequette penned an editorial suggesting that American car companies raise the white flag on dual clutch transmissions and give up on trying to persuade Americans to buy cars fitted with them. Why? Because, Vellequette says, like CVT transmissions, they "just don't sound right or feel right to American drivers." (Note: In the article, it's not clear if Vellequette is arguing against wet-clutch and dry-clutch DCTs or just dry-clutch DCTs, which is what Ford and Chrysler use.) The article goes on to state that Ford and Chrysler have experimented with DCTs and that both consumers and the automotive press haven't exactly given them glowing reviews, despite their quicker shifts and increased fuel efficiency potential compared to torque-converter automatic transmissions.
Autoblog staffers who weighed in on the relevance of DCTs in American cars generally disagreed with the blanket nature of Vellequette's statement that they don't sound or feel right, but admit that their lack of refinement compared to traditional automatics can be an issue for consumers. That's particularly true in workaday cars like the Ford Focus and Dodge Dart, both of which have come in for criticism in reviews and owner surveys. From where we sit, the higher-performance orientation of such transmissions doesn't always meld as well with the marching orders of everyday commuters (particularly if drivers haven't been educated as to the transmission's benefits and tradeoffs), and in models not fitted with paddle shifters, it's particularly hard for drivers to use a DCT to its best advantage.
Finally, we also note that DCT tuning is very much an evolving science. For instance, Autoblog editors who objected to dual-clutch tuning in the Dart have more recently found the technology agreeable in the Fiat 500L. Practice makes perfect - or at least more acceptable.
Ford Announces Free Brake-Pad Offer If Customers Stop By Dealers
Mon, Aug 4 2014These days, when you buy a new car, it's not unreasonable to expect a certain period of free maintenance to come along as well. Sometimes this is through the life of the warranty, in other cases a little less. But Ford Motor Company is going beyond those deals for at least one part of its cars. As of now, if you buy a set of Motorcraft brake pads for a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury model, you get free replacements for as long as you own the vehicle. The offer is good at Ford or Lincoln dealers and Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers. "We will replace the pads for as long as you own the vehicle," said Elizabeth Weigandt to Autoblog. She did clarify that the Motorcraft pads are generally for models from the '90s or newer. Also, to take advantage of this program, a person must return to the same dealer each time to get the free parts. Of course, Ford isn't just handing out brake pads to anyone who walks by; there are certain stipulations. First, the components have to be worn down to less than three millimeters to be eligible, and the buyer still has to pay for the labor to install them. If the model is used as a fleet vehicle for commercial purposes like as a taxi or limousine, this offer also doesn't apply; the same thing for racecars. On the plus side, if you recently bought a set of pads from one of the participating locations, you're still in luck. The deal covers parts purchased as of July 1. "This program reflects our commitment to providing customers with an excellent ownership experience regardless of the age of their vehicle," said Frederiek Toney, President of Ford Customer Service, in the company's announcement of the offer. How Ford's light lab keeps the sun shining on the new Mustang just right [w/video]
Thu, 02 Jan 2014Anyone who's bought one of those old school metal shift knobs knows they're really cool until they sit in a parking lot in the sun for a few hours. Then they're not cool at all. Likewise, features such as the aluminum dash on the 2015 Ford Mustang can be all kinds of neat right up until the sun hits it just the right way and sends shards of blinding light through the cabin. The Ford Visual Performance and Evaluation Lab is where engineers figure out how to make sure that doesn't happen.
Cars like said Mustang are parked inside the 30-foot reflecting dome under 6,000 watts of lights that can mimic the sun at any time of day and in any weather condition. Engineers can then spend cold, overcast days inside, testing for interior legibility, glare and reflections on every interior and exterior surface as if it were bright and sunny. They can also learn how a car's sheetmetal and colors will look out of doors, all year round.
Ford showed off the lighting lab without the music and interviews three years ago when the Explorer was being prepared. You can watch it at work again in the video below, and read about it in the press release below that.
