1970 Ford Thunderbird

2door Special Landau Brougham

29,3XX original miles, delivered new to Salt Lake City and built at the Wixom, Michigan plant on November 13, 1969 (see Marti report).  The color is called Medium Red Glamour Metallic paint, better known as Burgundy Fire.  The color was a $200 extra charge. This particular car is highly optioned with factory Auto Temp AC, speed control, 8 track AM/FM stereo radio, power seats, power door locks, power steering, rim blow horn, power Sure Track (Ford's version of front ABS in 1970) brakes, power windows, tilt wheel, rear window defroster, remote trunk release, tinted glass, convenience group, protection group, traction lock differential, C6 Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic transmission with a 429 Thunderjet V8 and the interior (near perfect original) is a dark red “Hopsack cloth and vinyl” with high back bucket seats and console option which includes Special Landau running lights.

In the 8 track storage box in the console, you will find an AM/FM stereo receiver with an 8 gig SD card to hold your music.  Four new speakers have been added to the original speaker locations.

Only 399 were built with these paint and trim codes.

I purchased this car from a dealer who collects cars.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t driven much since 2008 and it was allowed to sit outside.  Somewhat anal about my cars, I repainted it in August after stripping off every single piece of trim and chrome except the front bumper.  The paint is SUPERB with five color coats and four clear coats.  The interior is original except for the carpet being replaced by the previous owner.  The vinyl top is original and the original spare tire is in the trunk. There was some bubbling under the vinyl top at the top of the rear quarter where it usually appears in vinyl topped cars and that was professionally and correctly repaired during the preparation for paint.

There is a two inch crack on the top of the dash where these dashes always crack, thus the dash protector.  The windshield is new, the stainless was polished and I re-plated the rear bumper because it had a minor ding I didn’t like.  The clock even works.

Notice the door panels and the straightness of the arm rests. Look at the detail work and color of the driver seat…that is representative of all the upholstery. Only the L/R window doesn’t operate: have a new motor but have not tackled it yet.  The speed control is not hooked up, but everything is there, the A/C was converted to R134a and works perfectly.

Because any car sitting for a period of time will deteriorate, I decided to replace all the belts and hoses, plugs, wires, points, etc., rebuilt the carburetor and also replaced the valve seals which deteriorated from sitting.  It has all new tires, brakes, rotors, brake lines and I even replaced the double Cardin CV joints and the four U-joints and balanced the drive shaft.  All four springs were replaced and new gas shocks were fitted. It has a new exhaust system, new fan clutch and the car has been tuned by a master mechanic to perform flawlessly.  The ride is, of course, very much like a Lincoln Mark III since it is basically the same car.

The car was first shown in September when it won BEST OF SHOW.  The next month, it was shown at a Concours car show where it won FIRST IN CLASS.  These two awards given within a month of each other tell the story of how incredible this car looks.  It is a testimony of its show condition.

This car is registered in the Thunderbird registry #42731 (TBIRDREGISTRY.COM)

I have had many requests to sell the car but never really thought about it ‘til now.  Two different value guides list the top value of $21.5K for an excellent car.  If you have been looking for a very fine, show worthy example, here it is.  But, I ain’t giving this puppy away – you get what you pay for.

This car is First Class all the way.

The usual disclaimers apply.  The car is sold as is where is with no warranty of any kind, expressed or implied.  It resides in Palm Springs, California and you are welcome to see, drive, inspect and ogle this car if you wish.  I welcome any inspection by you or a professional inspector/appraiser, all you need to do is call me to set it up.

The actual mileage on the title when I got it was 26K.  I am told it is correct, however, I cannot prove it as I was not provided with original service records.  However, based on the condition of the interior and the engine leak down and compression tests (all within 10% of norm), I am convinced of the accuracy of the odometer.

I will entertain offers, but I WILL NOT DISCLOSE the reserve so don’t bother to ask.  If you think you can low ball an offer and get this gem, think again…

I can be reached at 702 400-3749

On Feb-13-14 at 15:39:37 PST, seller added the following information:

I have pictures of the undercarriage before installing the new exhaust system and before balancing the drive shaft, however, Ebay says I cannot edit any of the existing 24 pictures.  If you want additional pictures, send a message with your email and what pictures you want me to send to you.

Ford's Simple Suit Makes You Feel Like A Drunk Driver

Tue, Mar 25 2014

We've all heard about the dangers of drunk driving for practically our entire lives. Whether it's from PSAs on TV or lectures in school, no one can claim ignorance of drunk driving being extremely dangerous. However, that doesn't prevent some people from still doing it. Ford is trying to take the safety message directly to young drivers with a special suit that allows them to simulate driving under the influence. It is all part of Ford's Driving Skills for Life program that gives free driving education to young people. The program is meant to "train kids in skills they don't learn in driver's ed," said Kelli Felker, Ford Safety Communications Manager, to Autoblog. The drivers don a few items to impair their senses and make them off-balance to simulate having a few too many drinks and then go out on a closed course with an instructor to see the effects. Felker said that the suit is a new part of the program, and Ford just received the outfit in the US. It will be incorporated into the training here in the late spring or early summer. Scroll down to see the effect it has on drivers in Europe. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.

SEMA crowns Mustang, FR-S as this year's hottest cars in the building

Wed, 31 Oct 2012

After wrapping up the first day of the 2012 SEMA Show, organizers handed out awards for some of the trendiest vehicles on display. Since the whole point of SEMA is to show off new products available in the aftermarket world for use in cars, trucks and SUVs, each year, the show distinguishes the most popular vehicle in various segments. Not surprisingly, this year's Hottest Car and Hottest Sport Compact are the Ford Mustang and Scion FR-S, respectively, while the Ford F-Series brought home the Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler was named the Hottest 4x4-SUV.
More than 2,000 companies are at this year's show, and the display booths represents a "vote" for each car to determing the trendiest vehicles in each of the four categories. It isn't clear if these awards also take cars brought by OEMs into account, but the Mustang and FR-S were definitely well represented by both OEM and aftermarket show versions.
As usual, the OEMs showed up in force at the this year's SEMA Show exhibiting a variety of cars ranging from production-intent cars like the beastly Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to much flashier rides like Scion's Carbon Stealth FR-S.

2015 Ford Mustang to make world debut on Dec. 5 [w/video]

Tue, 19 Nov 2013

Between a bevvy of spy shots, speculative renders and insidery images from the halls of Car and Driver, we've got a pretty decent idea of what the 2015 Ford Mustang might look like. Still, we're excited to see the real deal as soon as possible.
Turns out that Ford has told us just when that first official look might come, too, although it has chosen somewhat of a backdoor fashion for dropping the news.
The video below popped up on the Ford Mustang YouTube channel this morning, promoting a social media effort called #MustangInspires on. The video and hashtag ask fans of the pony car to share pictures of the car - or "photographic stories of inspiration" - on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. But the truly interesting part of the video description is that which mentions taking "the cover off the all-new Mustang" on December 5. Consider our calendars marked.
