1957 Ford Thunderbird Black Convertable - Off The Road Since 1969 on 2040-cars
Wyckoff, New Jersey, United States
This Raven Black 1957 Thunderbird is now in the hands of its 3rd owner and has been off the road since 1969. The 312ci engine was removed apx 15yrs ago, rebuilt and stored in a dry basement (sitting on an engine stand which will go with the sale), along with the heads and all of the other engine components/accessories. The transmission is an automatic and had required a front pump back then, which prompted the beginning of a restoration that would never took place. So, the complete drive train is out of the car. The body as you can see, will require the usual repair work/panels, ie, the original rockers are rusted, lower quarters have had a previous repair and will need work, the rear deck has two places (see photos) that will need a patch, two spots in the trunk (left & right usual) and both inner fenders near duct opening/controls, have typical rust. The air ducts as you can see from the photos have rust in the upper section, lower sections appear good as does the duct scoops in the cowl/grill area. Both doors, although not bad, have some rust along the bottom as can be seen in the pictures. There are four never used tires mounted on steel wheels (no spare and only 1 is a KH wheel). The original jack assembly, complete with the base, stand, spoon and hand strap, are included in this auction. Also has dealer installed tonnue cover that snaps around the entire interior. The photos will show the areas that need work as described as well as those area that are in fact quite decent, such as the floor pan (repair section on each side behind seat near dog leg and one silve dollar hole under the gas pedal and small section under where the floor pan connects to the toe kick on the drivers side under left foot). Both bumpers, grill and moldings are straight and will need replating. Drivers window cracked (I will provide a used replacement) and the left window post/wind wing is out of the car. Windshield appears to be orginal and good. Soft top has what i believe to be the original canvas/window. Interior will need to be fully replaced although the seat was redone years ago and remains in decent condition. Seat belts appear to be vintage dealer installed and there are no fender skirts. Missing: although many of the items are off the car (including the engine/trans, etc as indicated), I believe the only items missing that I'm aware of is; one of the inside door access panels, one brake drum, spare tire/wheel & wheel covers, speaker. Items like the horn ring, steering column collar, town and country radio, items from the engine compartment etc, are out of the car but are not missing. Include in the sale is a NOS exhaust system complete from the manifold back including mufflers and resonators. Please call me with any questions or if there are specific pictures that you'd like to see, at 201-314-1249 or contact me thru this auction. I've tried to describe this vehicle but talking over the phone is your best bet. On Aug-21-14 at 18:44:32 PDT, seller added the following information: Added later: I forgot to put the pictures of the Engine/Trans and components (heads, fan, ps pump, valve covers, etc) so please ask and i'll send you other pictures....thanks for your interest |

Why the Detroit Three should merge their engine operations
Tue, Dec 22 2015GM and FCA should consider a smaller merger that could still save them billions of dollars, and maybe lure Ford into the deal. Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne would love to see his company merge with General Motors. But GM's board of directors essentially told him to go pound sand. So now what? The boardroom battle started when Mr. Marchionne published a study called Confessions of a Capital Junkie. In it, Sergio detailed the amount of capital the auto industry wastes every year with duplicate investments. And he documented how other industries provide superior returns. He's right, of course. Other industries earn much better returns on their invested capital. And there's a danger that one day the investors will turn their backs on the auto industry and look to other business sectors where they can make more money. But even with powerful arguments Marchionne couldn't convince GM to take over FCA. And while that fight may now be over, GM and FCA should consider a smaller merger that could still save them billions of dollars, and maybe lure Ford into the deal. No doubt this suggestion will send purists into convulsions, but so be it. The Detroit Three should seriously consider merging their powertrain operations, even though that's a sacrilege in an industry that still considers the engine the "heart" of the car. These automakers have built up considerable brand equity in some of their engines. But the vast majority of American car buyers could not tell you what kind of engine they have under the hood. More importantly, most car buyers really don't care what kind of engine or transmission they have as long as it's reliable, durable, and efficient. Combining that production would give the Detroit Three the kind of scale that no one else could match. There are exceptions, of course. Hardcore enthusiasts care deeply about the powertrains in their cars. So do most diesel, plug-in, and hybrid owners. But all of them account for maybe 15 percent of the car-buying public. So that means about 85 percent of car buyers don't care where their engine and transmission came from, just as they don't know or care who supplied the steel, who made the headlamps, or who delivered the seats on a just-in-time basis. It's immaterial to them. And that presents the automakers with an opportunity to achieve a staggering level of manufacturing scale. In the NAFTA market alone, GM, Ford, and FCA will build nearly nine million engines and nine million transmissions this year.

Detroit's new fleet of donated police cars have safety issues [w/video]
Wed, 23 Oct 2013In a show of generosity in mid-August, Detroit's business leaders donated $8 million to the Police Department and Fire Department in order to buy 100 new police vehicles and 23 EMS ambulances. But now officers have discovered - and complained - that the police vehicles have glaring safety issues, Deadline Detroit reports. It is not made clear what models of the fleet vehicles - which include police versions of the Ford Taurus, the Chevrolet Caprice and the Dodge Charger - are affected by the safety issues.
Officers reportedly have complained that the Plexiglass partition separating front-seat officers and back-seat prisoners is easily breached, and that the front passenger seat is installed too close to the dashboard. Prisoners who manage to writhe out of their handcuffs can bend the Plexiglass and reach into the cockpit, and sitting too close to the dashboard can render airbags more dangerous and make officers more vulnerable to injury in a crash.
Mark Diaz, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, received the complaints and reportedly said the vehicles would get safety updates addressing the issues. But Deadline Detroit reports that it checked some of the offending police cars and, as of the last few days, they hadn't been updated.
