Up for sale I have a 1993 Ford Taurus SHO with a 5-speed manual transmission. This is the third SHO I have owned, and the best one. The car goes like a scalded cat -- runs great, stops with authority, handles crisply, just plain does everything well. It also has four nearly brand new Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires on it. The car has been lovingly maintained throughout its entire life; I am the second owner. The original owner garaged the car and sold it to me in August of 2009 because she had two other vehicles and wanted it to go to a good home. I have always taken good car of the car -- it has never been beat on, always adult driven, and maintenance has been kept up on. I use only Motorcraft oil and filters, specifically synthetic blend 5W-30 oil and FL-400S filters, changed about every 3,000 miles. When parts have been replaced, I've also used Ford and Motorcraft wherever possible, and I always use super unleaded gasoline. The vehicle almost never sits in traffic -- the vast majority of the mileage I've covered has been out on the highway, where it gets fantastic fuel economy.
Here's a comprehensive list of what I've done to the car since I've owned it:
$70 for headlights (plus shipping)
$46 for detail supplies and fog light bulbs
$30 for rear sway bar links
$6 for Motorcraft oil cap
$185.94 for registration and title
$500 for brake hard lines lines running almost the entire length of vehicle
$600 for 4 BF Goodrich g-Force Sport tires, mounted, balanced, and aligned
$135 for A/C recharge
$31 for sway bar links
$223 for rear brake line and sway bar link install
$389 for brake lines from master to right front caliper
$117 to drill and tap drain plug in tranny case, fill trans
with Mercon ATF, change oil and filter.
$283 for Magnaflow high flow Y-pipe
$192 for Motorcraft plugs and wires
$48 for Motorcraft coolant temperature sensor and Airtex coolant temperature sender
$73.41 for rear rotors and pads
$148 to remove frozen rear right caliper, replace with a new one, and install rotor and pads
$36.67 for rear subframe bushings
$196.97 for oxygen sensors and Motorcraft front pads and rotors
$387.76 for 4 BF Goodrich g-Force Sports
$135 to mount and balance tires and to align car
$49 for Motorcraft cam position sensor
$50 to install cam position sensor
$6.73 for Ford subframe bolt
$531.25 for installation of Y-pipe, flex pipe, turbo mufflers, and stainless steel tips
$104.60 for inner and outer tie rod ends (both left and right sides)
$150 for inner and outer tie rod install
$220.34 for Bosch alternator
$160 for left and right A1 Cardone remanufactured CV shafts
$180 for left A1 Cardone remanufactured CV shaft and Timken wheel bearing install
$180 for right A1 Cardone remanufactured CV shaft and Timken wheel bearing install
$82.40 for Duralast Gold battery and electrical connectors
$441.84 for four Continental ExtremeContact 225 55-16 tires installed at 191,400 miles.
$80 for mounting and balancing.
$50 for power steering / water pump belt and A/C / alternator / crank belt
$135 for installation of both power steering / water pump belt, A/C, alternator, crank belt, and Bosch alternator.
$120.30 for 2 Monroe Sensatrac rear struts and 2 Mevotech rear strut mounts
$176 to install right rear Monroe Sensatrac rear strut and Mevotech strut mount
$169.69 to replace right rear caliper and bleed brakes
$100 to replace serpentine belt tensioner pulley
$15 for power antenna mast
$243.72 for cooling fan assembly, installation, installation of power antenna, and LOF.
$450 to replace power steering pump and power steering belt tensioner pulley
$483.82 for four Continental ExtremeContact DWS 225 55-16 tires installed at about 218,400 miles.
$60 to mount and balance Contis.
$120 to replace driver's rear Monroe Sensatrac rear strut, Mevotech strut mount, and sway bar end link.
While there is some ugly rust on the passenger's quarter panel (my body guy looked at it and had no problem fixing or replacing it, but I've got three cars), a spot on the trunk, and a spot on the driver's quarter panel, the car is very clean overall. It is sound underneath, the paint shines brightly, and the interior is beautiful. There is very little wear on the driver's seat, and essentially no wear on the others. They have truly held up wonderfully. This is a fantastic car that runs beautifully -- it performs like a car with a fraction of the miles. It has 221,846 on the clock. Of course, as with most used cars, the car is not perfect. The A/C does not work, for example (all other climate control functions are fine). But it is far nicer and runs far better than most I've come across of this vintage.
I love this car, but I have two other vehicles, and am trying to trim the fleet -- that is the only reason I'm selling. Otherwise I would keep the car and enjoy her for many more years and many more miles. There are no lights on the dash, no squeaks, rattles, or noises. The Carfax is clean, the title clear. By the way, the exhaust is awesome. It consists of a high flow Y-pipe from Magnaflow (a very well known and worthwhile modification on these cars that frees up about 12 horsepower), and custom work from there back (a small section of the original exhaust was saved where it splits to go to the tailpipes), including two Dynomax three chambered mufflers with double walled Magnaflow tips. This system does not drone. It is quiet at idle and out on the highway, but has a mellifluous growl and smooth tone when you accelerate.
This is a solid, reliable SHO. She's ready to go -- all she needs now is another good home.
As you'd expect, the car is sold as is, with no warranty expressed or implied. I have title in hand for easy transfer to the new owner.

Ford hit by lawsuit over hybrid technology from, surprise, Paice
Fri, Feb 28 2014The name Paice will be familiar to anyone who's been deep in the weeds of hybrid history, but it will probably be new to anyone who simply drives one. The key part of the story is something called "HyperDrive," which is the name given to a gas-electric powertrain technology developed by Alex Severinsky and patented in 1994. HyperDrive is a way to get the energy from both the electric battery and the engine into the wheels, seamlessly. The patents are held by Paice, which is an unusual company (its HQ is a house in a retirement community, right by a golf course) that does nothing but litigate. You can read more on Paice here. The latest case targets Ford and the hybrid and plug-in versions of the C-Max and Fusion models as well as the Lincoln MKZ. Paice claims that it held "over 100 meetings and interactions with Ford" between 1999 and 2004, and gave the automaker, "detailed information about the hybrid technology that Paice had developed." The suit also alleges that: For more than five years, Paice answered inquiries from multiple departments within Ford, believing in good faith that a business relationship between Paice and Ford would be mutually beneficial and advance the acceptance of Paice's technology. ... After years of Ford learning the details of Paice's hybrid drivetrain technology, Ford elected not to enter into a business relationship with Paice. The suit is officially known as, "Paice LLC v. The Ford Motor Co., 14-492, U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland (Baltimore)" and you can read the PDF here. Ford told AutoblogGreen, "we do not comment on pending litigation." Toyota settled a similar patent-infringement case in 2010 and now pays Paice almost $100 for every hybrid it sells. Paice is still in court against Hyundai and Kia. In 2010, Ford also settled with Paice but they agreed to keep negotiating on other issues until at least January 1, 2014. With that date now in the past, it didn't take long for Paice to file papers to get the two sides back before a judge. That's where it appears to be most comfortable.
Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS
Sat, Jan 21 2023Ford's now-defunct Mercury Division first began using the Marquis name in 1967, on a sporty full-size hardtop based on the Ford LTD, then began offering the Grand Marquis beginning in the 1979 model year. These big, boxy luxury sedans were replaced by big, curvy luxury sedans (on the same platform) starting with the 1992 model year, so today's Junkyard Gem is one of the very last squared-off Grand Marquises ever built. The 1991 Grand Marquis (or "Grandma Keith," as many refer to it today) looks nearly identical to its 1979 predecessor at a glance, just as the 2011 model doesn't differ much from the 1992 model. Ford saw no reason to follow short-lived fashion trends with its simple, sturdy rear-wheel-drive sedan. Only two Grand Marquis trim levels were available for 1991: the base GS and the (somewhat) upscale LS. The former listed at $18,741 and the latter at $19,241, which comes to about $41,494 and $42,601, respectively, in inflated 2022 dollars). This interior would have seemed comfortingly familiar to a 1968 (or even 1958) Mercury owner time-traveling to 1991. This is the optional "full grain leather seating surface," which cost an extra $489 (about $1,083 today). Dig those opera lights! Air conditioning was standard equipment in the 1991 Grand Marquis and its wagon counterpart, the Colony Park. The engine is the good old pushrod 5.0-liter Windsor V8, which would be replaced by a far more modern 4.6-liter SOHC mill in the '92 Grand Marquis. This engine was rated at 180 horsepower. A four-speed automatic was the only transmission available. The early 1990s ended up being the last gasp for padded vinyl roofs being considered mainstream equipment on new Detroit cars; this one was called the "Formal Coach" roof and cost an additional 725 bucks ($1,605 now). Such roofs were still available on a few cars later in the decade, but their time had passed. Why would such a clean Grandma Keith end up in a place like this? That's easy: it got T-boned directly into the right front wheel, mangling the body and bending up the suspension. This damage might have been worth fixing when the car was five years old, but it's a write-off when it happens to a 31-year-old Ford Panther. 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis Commercial - Savings Ad The granddaddy of them all, and on sale in South Texas! Jay Leno is far beyond driven in his 1971 Pantera
Mon, 23 Jun 2014Perhaps it's fitting that the band Pantera is known for its heavy metal music, because the DeTomaso Pantera is the automotive equivalent of a metal album. It's short, aggressive and makes a mean sound. It doesn't mess around either, with a Ford 351-cubic-inch (5.75-liter) V8 sending mountains of torque to the rear wheels. This week, Jay Leno takes us on a detailed tour of his '71 to show why it rocks.
There's a regular format to Jay Leno's Garage. It starts with Jay and maybe a guest taking a look at the car and talking about its history, and then they take it out on the open road. However, this video is practically a Pantera buyer's guide. Jay is adamant from the start that the last thing anyone should own is a stock example. To remedy this, he and his guest, the editor of the Pantera Club magazine, take viewers to school about some of the ways to turn them into even better performance machines.
No matter what you do to it, though, the Pantera requires that the driver adapt to it, not the other way around. For example, Jay isn't a big guy by most standards, but he has to cram himself into the cockpit with his shoes off and shirt partially unbuttoned just to go for a drive. Still, once out on the road, it all makes sense with that rumbling V8 and those Italian supercar looks. Scroll down to watch and learn a lot more about this uncompromising '70s performance car.
