Offered for auction today is my 2004 Ford Focus SE wagon. I bought this car on eBay on 9 July 2010 from a small dealer in Dover, NJ. I am the second owner and have given the car a great deal of attention and TLC for the three years that I have owned it. I have always been diligent with maintenance. It has never been in an accident, which you will see on the AutoCheck report and Carfax, if you choose to buy a Carfax report. When I bought the car it had just over 48,000 miles on it, so the first owner averaged about 8,000 miles a year. It has just over 96,000 miles on it now, which comes to just over 10,000 miles a year since it's manufacture date, so this is a very low mileage car.
- MILEAGE. At just over 96k, my car has been driven on average only about 10k miles a year since manufacture. The amount of wear and tear is minimal at this car's KBB value and condition
- MAINTENANCE. I have been diligent in my care of this car. At 60k miles, I did a full service that included tie-rod ends, automatic transmission filter kit, and valve cover gasket. At 81k miles I put a new set of tires on the car and had the brakes inspected. The braking system passed inspection and the shop cleaned the brake hardware. I installed a new alternator and Bosch battery at 86k miles. I have routinely performed oil changes at manufacturer recommended 5,000 mile intervals using only Ford Motorcraft 5-20 oil. The first generation Focus had a thermostat housing that tended to fail. Mine was no different and I had it replaced at about 70k miles. I also replaced the tensioner pulley and serpentine belt at the same time. I have also replaced the turn signal stalk with a new one - another Focus part that tended to fail. YOU WILL SEE IN THE PHOTOS A HAZY HEADLIGHT LENS. When I took these photos, I was in the middle of restoring the passenger side headlight lens with a 3M lens restoration kit. The light was starting to fade so I had to go snap the photos before finishing the job. I have since finished it and the lens is now crystal clear.
- ENGINE. My Focus wagon has the uprated engine option that I mentioned earlier. The more powerful engine gives you everything you need when it is time to pass on the freeway or make a quick lane change.
- ECONOMY. I have been making a long commute to work in the last 6 months. I have averaged almost 31 mpg on the highway. That isn't Prius territory, but it's close. And a Prius costs a lot more to both buy and maintain.

Junkyard Gem: 1991 Mercury Capri
Mon, Sep 19 2016Ford has gotten a lot of use out of the Capri name in the United States. First, there was the Lincoln Capri in the 1950s, followed by the Ford Capri Mk1 (which was sold by Mercury dealers in the USA but never actually badged as a Mercury). Then came the 1979-1986 Mercury Capri, built on the very successful Fox Platform and essentially a clone of the Mustang. Finally, in 1991, the Australian Ford Capri came to the United States. Here is an example of this rare car that I spotted in a Northern California self-service yard not long ago. Mechanically speaking, the 1991-1994 Capri was a Mazda 323 under the skin, complete with a member of the same B-series engine family that went into such cars as the Miata and Ford Escort. So, for a few years in the early 1990s, car shoppers who wanted a sporty Mazda convertible could choose between a Miata and a Capri. The Capri had front-wheel-drive, but could be had with factory turbocharging. These cars were reliable and fun, but had a tough time competing with the Miata in the showroom battles. You'll see the occasional example now and then, but most of the 1991-1994 Capris have met the same fate that awaits this one. Related Video:
Ford nets $5.7B in 2012, $1.6B in fourth quarter
Tue, 29 Jan 2013Ford brought in $5.7 billion in net income during 2012, which is around $307 million less than one year prior. Even so, the automaker closed out 2012 with the highest pre-tax profit for a single quarter in nearly 10 years, earning $1.7 billion in the fourth quarter thanks largely to a higher-than-average truck mix in the US. That's a jump of $577 million over 2011. Likewise, that translated into fourth quarter income of $1.6 billion. All told, Ford set a full-year pre-tax profit record in 2012. But that doesn't necessarily mean everything is rosy in the land of the Blue Oval.
Like every other manufacturer, 2012 saw Ford get hammered in the European Union, where a deep economic recession continues to drive down consumer confidence. The automaker lost more than $700 million in Europe, and saw full revenue of $26.6 billion in 2012. That's a decline of $7.2 billion compared to last yea. Ford says the market for new vehicles in Europe has contracted to 13.5 million units, the lowest number in 17 years. You can read the full press release below for more information.
Ford recalls select Explorer, E-Series vans
Tue, 21 Jan 2014Just a few days ago we brought you news that Ford had issued a recall on 28,000 units of the Edge crossover for problems related to the fuel line. But now the Blue Oval has issued recall notices on two more of its larger vehicles.
The first relates to the Explorer, 395 examples of which from the 2011 and 2012 model years were found to have problems with their steering systems if they underwent service after September 1, 2013. An apparent software glitch could lock the steering gear, preventing the driver from steering the vehicle and thereby increasing the risk of a crash. As a result, Ford dealers are being instructed to check their records to identify the problematic vehicles and bring them in to have the steering gear replaced. Details of the recall can be found in the PDF linked here.
The second problem revolves around E-Series vans that may develop bubbles in their windshields under hot temperatures. The decrease in visibility through the problematic windshield could - you guessed it - "increase the risk of a crash." As a result, Ford is calling in 4,532 units of the E-150, E-250, E-350 and E-450 vans built in the relatively short window between May 12 and May 26, 2011. Details of this recall can be found in the notice below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
