MotorWeek remembers pre-EcoBoost Ford with the Thunderbird TurboCoupe

Thu, Feb 26 2015

Sometimes it feels great to embrace nostalgia for a trip down memory lane, and MotorWeek indulges that occasional desire with its regular Retro Review series. This time, the long-lived show goes back to the '80s to check out two of the top performance vehicles in the Ford lineup at the time – the 1987 Thunderbird TurboCoupe and Mustang GT. Both models had just received thorough refreshes after several years on the market. Long before an EcoBoost badge ever met its models, Ford made early forays into experimenting with turbocharging on vehicles like the T-Bird TurboCoupe. Based on MotorWeek's assessment, the company was on the right track. The boosted 2.3-liter four-cylinder was apparently a bit coarse but offered 190 horsepower with little turbo lag, compared to 155 hp the year before. The Mustang GT is likely the more-fondly remembered of these performance Fords today and provides an interesting point of comparison against the TurboCoupe. MotorWeek found some faults with the 'Stang, though. While it was quick for the time with a sprint to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, the 'car was described as "a nose-heavy beast" for its handling. And for a look at Ford's future in turbocharging – the GT will have an EcoBoost powerplant – check out our Related Video:

Ford spotted testing new Fiesta RS hot hatch

Mon, Mar 16 2015

There's a lot to love about Focus ST and Fiesta ST, but if neither of those is enough for you, we've got good news: Ford has even more potent RS versions of both in the works. The Focus RS we already saw last month, but here we have our first spy shots of the smaller Fiesta RS undergoing testing. Spotted alongside still-camouflaged prototypes of its big brother, the new Ford Fiesta RS is wearing a modified front end, flared fenders packing a wider track and a revised rear-end. The beefed-up bodywork is all well and fine, but we're looking forward to finding out what's underneath it all. Sources point towards a 250-horsepower version of Dearborn's 1.6-liter EcoBoost turbo four, along with upgraded brakes and suspension. The big question, though, is whether the production Fiesta RS will pack the new performance all-wheel-drive system from its larger counterpart, or stick with front-drive and some sort of clever diff. It may be too early to tell, as this pocket rocket is likely a good year away from its debut, but in the meantime you can scope out the spy shots in the slideshow above for a taste of what's to come. Biden will travel to Michigan Tuesday to speak about UAW strike

Fri, Sep 22 2023

President Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday to speak about the United Auto Workers' strike against Detroit automakers, the president announced Friday on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The UAW earlier invited Biden to join workers on the picket line in their fight for higher wages. The strike is entering its second week, with the UAW reporting progress in its talks with Ford, yet widening its walkout against GM and Stellantis.  Fain called all GM and Stellantis parts distribution facilities to strike on Friday, announcing walkouts at 38 locations across 20 states. All of the plants already on strike will remain on strike, according to Fain. Former President Donald Trump is also expected to visit the picket lines next week in Michigan, likely the day after Biden's visit. The UAW last week launched unprecedented, simultaneous strikes at one assembly plant each of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis, but analysts expect any wider strike will include plants that build highly profitable pickup trucks, GM's Chevy Silverado and Stellantis' Ram. About 12,700 workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio, which produce the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler and Chevrolet Colorado, alongside other popular models.
