I am the original owner of this 2003 Ford Expedition and am having emotional detachment issues selling it.   I really love this truck and even though it is 10 years old, it still gets looks everywhere I drive it.  I just needed a newer truck that would fit my lifestyle a little better as I have two German Shepherds and was constantly cleaning the interior.  So I bought a new pickup (with a cap) and now they can ride safely and cleanly in the back.

This Expy has been an incredible and dependable vehicle.  It has only been in the shop twice in the 10 years I have owned it.  Once for a Door Ajar light issue at about 50k miles, and a second time for a new starter/cable issue (known/factory defect) at 100k miles.  During both visits I had Ford go through all the factory recommended fluid changes, tune up, maintenance, etc.  During the first visit (50k) I also had the steering rag-joint replaced as I was having a bit of wheel vibration at about 80mph.  I am starting to experience it again, so it might be time for another new rag-joint as the big tires just wear out the joint faster that Ford anticipated.    I changed the oil every 3-5k miles and had all other fluids replaced as recommended. I really took good care of the truck as it was my daily driver and I'm a car nut.

As you can see by the pics, the Expy ain't exactly stock.  Here is a rundown of what's been done:

Engine / Drivetrain (not much)
- K&N Air Filter System
- Optima Battery
- Gibson (cat-back) exhaust

Suspension
- Lowered 2/3 inches with Eibach springs
- Factory Bilstein shocks
- Aftermarket electronic trailer brake controller (I tow hot rods and project cars occasionally)

Brakes
- Upgraded rotors
- Ceramic brake pads

Wheels/Tires
- 24x9.5 Lexani rims
- Cooper Zeon LTZ 305/35R24 tires

Body
- StreetScene Body Kit (Front bumper, side rocker covers, trailer hitch cover)
- StreetScene Grill
- Removed factory roof rack and running boards
- LED Tail Lights & 3rd Brake Light
- Custom built (by me) Headlights with Acura HID Projectors, Philips Bulbs & Ballasts, CCFL Halo Rings

Interior
- Katskin Black/Grey Leather on front & second row seats
- Brushed silver gauge overlay
- Black burl wood accent overlays on dash, console, doors, etc.
- Front doors had legal window tint applied

Here are ALL the known issues with the truck:

Body
- Paint is bubbling on rear lift gate around the hinges (see pics) and a smaller spot near the license plate
- Scratch on right rear passenger door, where I scraped up against my fence (see pics)
- Paint chipping on the lower right front bumper (see pics)
- There are some other minor scratches here and there, but no dents and no rust

Suspension
- I think the steering rag joint is going again as I am starting to get wheel vibrations at about 75-80 mph.  Again the big tires just kick the sheet out of the rag joint.
- On hard, high-speed braking, the truck pulls to the right.  I looked at the front rotors and they are scored, so it might nearly be time to replace them again, but you only experience this on panic stops.

Interior
- The driver side seat has a tear and is getting a little soft from all the entry and exit.  The other seats are perfect as I rarely had passengers - just me and my dogs.
- The airbag light keeps flashing, so it might need to have a factory check or reset.

Other
- The A/C developed a slow leak (can't find it) two years ago and I have to re-charge the system every summer.

Well that's about all I can think of.  I really love this truck and hate to sell her, but I got my new one and someone else can continue to enjoy this one. I'd prefer a buyer that doesn't live near me as I never want to see her again and experience sellers remorse.  She's a looker and just like an old girlfriend - out of sight is out of mind.  Seriously - she's a great truck and I will miss her.

Feel free to ask questions and she is available for inspection.

Defying Trump, major automakers finalize California emissions deal

Tue, Aug 18 2020

WASHINGTON — The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and major automakers on Monday confirmed they had finalized binding agreements to cut vehicle emissions in the state, defying the Trump administration's push for weaker curbs on tailpipe pollution. The agreements with carmakers Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co and BMW AG were first announced in July 2019 as voluntary measures prompting anger from U.S. President Donald Trump. A month later, the Justice Department opened an antitrust probe into the agreements. The government ended the investigation without action. The Trump administration in March finalized a rollback of U.S. vehicle emissions standards to require 1.5% annual increases in efficiency through 2026. That is far weaker than the 5% annual increases in the discarded rules adopted under President Barack Obama. The 50-page California agreements, which extend through 2026, are less onerous than the standards finalized by the Obama administration but tougher than the Trump administration standards. The automakers have also agreed to electric vehicle commitments. Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely Holdings, said in March it planned to join the automakers agreeing to the California requirements. It has also finalized its agreement. The settlement agreements say California and automakers agreed to resolve "potential legal disputes concerning the authority of CARB" and other states that have adopted California's standards. In May, a group of 23 U.S. states led by California and some major cities, challenged the Trump vehicle emissions rule. Other major automakers like General Motors Co, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Toyota Motor Corp did not join the California agreement. Those companies also sided with the Trump administration in a separate lawsuit over whether the federal government can strip California of the right to set zero emission vehicle requirements. Ford said the "final agreement will reduce emissions in our vehicles at a more stringent rate, support and incentivize the production of electrified products, and create regulatory certainty." BMW said "by setting these long-term, predictable, and achievable standards, we have the regulatory certainty that is necessary for long-term planning that will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but ultimately benefit consumers as well."

STUDY: Ford owns brand loyalty in 2009; Scorned Saturn, Pontiac buyers will look outside of GM

Fri, 16 Oct 2009

Ford buyers appear to love their cars more than customers of any other automotive brand, returning back to the American automaker when it comes time to purchase their next vehicle. According to a study by Experian Automotive, six of the top 10 vehicles for customer brand loyalty wear badges from the Blue Oval. That includes the Ford Fusion (62.4 percent), Ford Edge (57.9 percent), Ford Five Hundred/Taurus (56 percent), Ford Freestyle (51.9 percent), Ford Escape (49.4 percent) and the Ford Focus (47.57 percent).
Other vehicles making up the top 10 include the Toyota Prius (52 percent), Chevy Impala (51.7 percent), Toyota Camry (47.8 percent) and Toyota Corolla (47.56 percent). This brings up an interesting question: With the closing of automotive brands like Saturn and Pontiac, where are those buyers to turn for their next automotive purchase?
Apparently, not back to General Motors. According to Experian, Pontiac owners are most likely to look to the Ford lineup for their next car or truck and Saturn shoppers will switch to Toyota or Honda - not particularly surprising given that Saturn was meant to compete with import brands. Experian predicts that GM's overall market share will fall from 20 percent to about 17.5 percent, with most of the slack being picked up by Ford, Honda and Toyota.

Ford, Samsung shack up to bring regen braking to non-hybrid models [w/video]

Mon, 09 Jun 2014

Ford must be desperate to get itself ready for the beach this summer because it is really trying to get into shape. Shortly after unveiling the Lightweight Concept that cut the weight of a Fusion down to that of a Fiesta, it's now the rest of the line's turn for improvement. The company is wrapping up a 10-year research project aimed at developing next-gen automotive batteries to improve efficiency.
Ford claims that 70 percent of its lineup will have stop/start tech by 2017. The key to this massive proliferation is its new dual-battery system that combines a lithium-ion battery with a lead-acid one and regenerative braking. The setup works by harvesting braking energy and converting it to electricity. When the vehicle stops, the engine shuts off, but the Li-ion battery has enough juice to keep the accessories running. The engine starts up again as drivers take their foot off the brake. The layout would mean less wasted gas while idling. It's already available on Ford hybrids and is somewhat similar to the i-Eloop capacitor-based system from Mazda.
The bigger challenge is tuning the regenerative braking right. While hybrid drivers may be a little more adventurous, when it comes to getting a hang of regen braking, conventional buyers might not be so open-minded. The systems have a tendency to be a little grabby at first and then taper off at very low speeds. Ford needs to make sure it's just right to avoid turning off buyers.
