This Expedition has exceeded my expectations and has been a great vehicle for towing my boat. I have owned it for 6 or 7 years. But have moved down to a smaller car.    I have put the following improvements on the truck since Ive had it; the A/C system blows cold air , the compressor and the evap . were replaced with New. The transmission Transfer Case was completely redone (at a cost of $1400 dollars).  The ignition coils were replaced not long ago. New starter , new alternator. New battery.  This engine runs very smooth. There is no hesitant acceleration at all. Has the pep of a much newer and lower milage truck.  The driveshaft is New along with the U -joints($700).  I had some tie rods replaced to improve the steering. Power steering works great. I have changed all the brakes in the last 2 or three years. A New wiper motor assembly was put in when I got it.   The tires are good and a couple were replaced this year.   This is a great truck for someone local in South Florida that needs a truck to tow their boat with or for working with a lot of tools. Its great for short or long distance traveling as Ive done both. Cruise control works great.

It has the leather seats with the heated seat warmers. The interior is a little worn but it cleans up well.  3rd row seating is a plus for a larger family, it seats 7.
It has a 6 disc cd changer.

the three things that dont work are ; 1) The A/C only blows out of the defroster and the upper vents. I think its a bad diverter, no big deal still cools great.  2) Driver side door key-lock mechanism was punched out by a hoodlum , but the lock still works and unlocks with a pin-pad code on the door. Again no big deal to fix and its been this way for 4 years now. The left hand door behind the driver side lock does not respond with the power locks. But it works manually just fine.

There are a couple areas of rust on the bottom of the doors. but Its been that way since I got it and it doesnt affect anything accept the appearance. A body shop could fix it for a  couple hundred bucks if you rear wanted it to look perfect.

There have been new brake lines installed recently, and it also has a tow package.

The fascinating forgotten civil defense history of Mister Softee trucks

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Hemmings came across an interesting article from the Throwin' Wrenches blog about the intersection of ice cream, cars and civic duty in America's late 1950s. In particular, it focuses on the Mister Softee trucks, which criss-crossed neighborhoods of the eastern US serving ice cream. Looking past the ultra-durable vehicles used - heavy-duty Ford-based chassis, for what it's worth - the article delves into some deeper national-security territory.
See, Mister Softee truck owners were voluntary members of the Civil Defense, thanks to all the useful stuff (potable water, generators, freezers and fridges) that the machines carried with them for serving ice cream. Click over to Throwin' Wrenches for the full run down of how Mister Softee would have stepped in to help fight if the Cold War ever turned a little hotter.

Fitting Retirement: Grand Marquis last Mercury off the line

Wed, 05 Jan 2011

The signs have come down and retail production ended back in October of 2010. Now, the very last Mercury model has rolled off the assembly line. This last Mercury somewhat fittingly takes the form of a Grand Marquis reporting for fleet duty. It was built at the St. Thomas plant in Ontario, Canada, which is the same facility that continues to produce the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car for fleet and livery duty.
St. Thomas' days are numbered, however, as the factory is slated to close on August 31. When it goes, the Panther platform is likely to follow. So long, and thanks for all the fish memories.

Do you guys like trucks?

Wed, Jan 17 2018

Do you guys like trucks? If the answer is yes, boy do we have the show for you! The 2018 North American International Auto Show is lousy with 'em. Yeah, we saw the new Ram 1500, Chevy Silverado and Ford Ranger, but that's just scratching the surface. There are big trucks, little trucks, clean trucks, dirty trucks, old trucks, new trucks, red trucks, blue trucks. It's like a Dr. Seuss book. Anyway, we made a little video for you truck nuts (see what I did there?). Check it out above, and if you're looking for more serious coverage of the Detroit Auto Show, we've got it, along with a ton of images and other videos from the show floor. Enjoy!
