Car re-listed due to inquiries asking for a "Buy it Now" price and to display more pictures.

First delivered new in 1997 to the Riverside Ohio Police Dept. as a duty cruiser, it was then bought by a local car collector at 17,000 miles, after a minor nose accident took it out of service.  The collector took it to Custom Coach Builders in Lima Ohio, (still in business) a limo, hearse and flower car builder, with the task of turning it into a station wagon.  Custom Coach used a mid-90's station wagon back from a Mercury Sable, plus new sheet metal from the rear seats back to turn it into a factory-looking wagon.  The collector then took it to a high end auto upholsterer who redid the seats and the roof liner, then installed a matching fabric rear-facing third seat.  It also has nice late-90's Mercury Grand Marquis aluminum wheels.  The rear window opens separately from the rear deck door.  I swapped out the original radio for a Kenwood radio/cd/Sirius player.

It sat in heated storage until I bought it in Feb. of 2010, when it had 23,500 miles.  Before buying it, I verified that it was a true P71 full Interceptor and that it had a clean CarFax and title.  I added a Class 3 hitch and an electric trailer brake controller, so I could occasionally pull a boat trailer.  I garaged it and drove it to work on Fridays, so now the car has 40,600 miles, is extremely well carried for, and has absolutely no rust.

The tires have 10-12,000 miles of remaining wear and no services will need to be done before the happy buyer takes it across country.  For those requesting transmission information, I had the transmission fluid replaced at 30,000 miles and the old fluid was perfectly clean.  Interceptors have a special speed chip, two radiators, a transmission cooler, heavy duty suspension and an anti-sway bar, so while set up for speed, they also can handle a Class 3 5,000 lb. tow.  I have magnetic badges that I apply when I take it to car shows (LAPD Badge # 714 and US Navy Shore Patrol.)  Always a hit at car shows, the car guys know that Ford didn't build a big wagon after 1991, but they all agree that if built by the factory, it would look just like mine.

I sold the boat and bought a Class C RV, so I no longer need my big rig.  While currently garaged in Raymond, ME, nor far from the Portland Airport, I could arrange to bring it to my eastern Long Island, NY home for inspection.  631-813-9006 for more information.  Ken

Ford is recalling more Takata airbag-equipped Ford and Lincoln models

Thu, Mar 2 2017

The Basics: Takata, the beleaguered airbag supplier at the root of the largest recall in automotive history, has informed Ford of a problem with the airbags in just over 30,000 Ford and Lincoln models. The problem is not related to the non-desiccated ammonium nitrate airbag inflators that plague the other airbags ( including many Fords), meaning there isn't a risk of shrapnel flying out from the units in this particular recall. The Problem: In the event of an accident, the front airbags may only partially inflate, and the airbag may become detached from the module because of misaligned parts. The problem affects 2016 and 2017 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX models built at the Oakville Assembly Plant. The issue also affects 2017 Lincoln Continentals that were built at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. Injuries/Deaths: In a release, Ford stated that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or deaths related to the airbag issue. The Fix: Dealers will replace the driver-side front airbag module at no cost. If You Own One: Sit tight and wait for Ford to notify owners. When that happens, take your car to the dealer for a replacement. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Ford reveals concept trucks that ultimately became Atlas

Wed, 03 Apr 2013

The Ford Atlas Concept was one of the quiet success stories of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and now Ford has given us a quick glimpse as to how that creation came to be. Designers actually combined two early sketches to build the Atlas. One, called the Bullet Train, is a futuristic, aerodynamic creation, while the other, aptly named the Locomotive, features the squared off proportions we're familiar with.
Once designers settled on the truck's proportions, they began nailing down exactly which attributes they wanted the final design to have. The Concept's notched windshield originated as a forked glass roof that seamlessly transitioned into the windscreen.
Likewise, designers wanted to fit the truck's tailgate with a storage compartment for tools and a first aid kit, but settled on the dual-purpose step/cargo cradle. Interestingly enough, the concept's active aero shutter wheels actually originated in some of the earliest sketches. Check out the photos and slides here for a closer look.

Jay Leno takes a Surfin' Safari in a 1937 Ford Woodie Restomod

Tue, 21 Oct 2014

Woodie wagons were a major part of surfing culture in the 1960s, offering coastal style and a ton of room, and they even earned a mention in the Beach Boys' classic song Surfin' Safari. This week, Jay Leno's Garage takes a look at two modern, restomodded examples of these style icons.
Unlike a lot of restomods, builder Scott Bonowski keeps these wagons looking almost completely stock on the outside, and all of the upgrades are hidden underneath the timber. You can't tell by looking at it, but the '37 Woodie (pictured above) has independent front and rear suspension, disc brakes and a Ford 5.0-liter V8 under the hood.
Beyond the mechanical aspect, the craftsmanship into the wood is astounding. Bonowski claims there are between 30 and 50 coats of varnish on this wagon. It makes these woodies as much of a piece of fine furniture as a vehicle to drive.
