’55 CROWN VICKY, THE CLOSED-BED RANCHERO THAT "SHOULD HAVE BEEN" “Roxanne” was a customized Crown Victoria I bought from a farmer in Vermont in the ‘70s. Unfortunately she was full of rot and bondo and had to be put to rest soon after. But in the early ‘90s, I bought the Crown Vicky that’s listed here with intentions of re-creating Roxanne. Did all of the cutting and some tack welding, and acquired a second trunk lid and a ’55 or ‘56 Ford station wagon rear window to weld in for her rear window, as the original car had. Typical story, ran out of time and money, and here she sits, in dry storage for over 20 years. The car is extremely solid, with some rust through in the lower rear quarters and lower fenders, but none in the floors or trunk, and the frame is extremely solid, even though it’s crusty and flaky with surface rust. One body mount is rusted through. The front crossmember is in great shape and they are known to rot out. On a couple of the photos of the underside you'll see places I sanded with 60 paper to bare metal to show that it's really not as bad as it looks underneath. The transmission tunnel is cut for a floor shift, but currently it’s got its original automatic on the column. There are numerous dents that need to be fixed. There is no interior aside from a ’64 Galaxie bench seat. The dash is intact. Doors are gutted but the window frames and regulators are present, along with power window motors. The stock 272 V8 is complete and will run, but needs a 6-volt battery. Included is a set of exterior stainless moldings which combined with what’s on the car should be more than enough to have a complete set in great shape on the car. Unfortunately the center piece of the interior crown is missing and the two side pieces are in bad shape. This is a big project, but a project well worth doing. If you’ve seen other mid-fifties Fords and Chevys converted in this way you will appreciate how the back of the roofline and the rear window look so much more natural on this car than most. Roxanne’s trunk was opened by hydraulic cylinders which made it easy. I also thought of having a way to make the trunk quickly removable for open pickup use. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET! US Air Force Thunderbirds Mustang fetches $400K at auction
Wed, 07 Aug 2013For the last six years, Ford has created a special version of the Mustang with a military aviation theme, and then donated the car to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to be auctioned off at the annual AirVenture event, also known as The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration. The money raised goes to the EAA Young Eagles program to inspire the "aviation pioneers of tomorrow," and this year's 2014 Ford Mustang GT US Air Force Thunderbirds Edition was won with a final bid of $398,000.
Celebrating 60 years of the USAF's Thunderbirds, this Mustang GT is the only one of its kind with a paint job matching the Thunderbirds' F-16 Falcon jets and some Ford Racing performance added on for good measure. Including this car, Ford has helped raise around $2.3 million for the charity with the biggest auction price coming from the first year of the program, the F-22 Raptor-inspired Mustang AV8R from 2008, which sold for $500,000.
Mustang Cobra Jet prototype garners $200k for charity at Barrett-Jackson
Wed, 02 Oct 2013A few weeks ago we brought you news of a one-off Mustang Cobra Jet that Ford was donating to charity. The car was set to be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Now that auction has taken place, bringing in an impressive $200,000 for MS research.
That's a lot of zeros for a Mustang, much less one you can't even drive on the street. But the unique pony car, bearing serial number 2014 BJMS CJXX1, packs a 5.0-liter supercharged V8, competition gearbox, wheelie bar, roll cage... all you could want, in short, in a turn-key drag racer. And all that for a good cause.
eBay Find of the Day: 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra prototype
Wed, 08 May 2013Over the last decade or so, competition in NASCAR has led to some pretty funky looking racecars. And when the sport was still up and coming, the tight competition actually led to some interesting production cars. The Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird are perhaps the most well-known cars of the sport's "aero wars" era but the Ford Torino King Cobra might have been the most memorable of all, if not for some different homologation rules established in 1970. The Torino King Cobra never made it to production and never competed in NASCAR, but three examples exist including this one now for sale on eBay.
Designed as a successor for the aero-tuned Torino Talladega, the Torino King Cobra has a sleeker front end with hidden headlights and a sloped nose. As the story goes, NASCAR made a rule change in 1970 requiring 3,000 of the vehicles to be produced, which was substantially more than the 500 units required by the previous rule. One of the three prototypes ever built - and the only one built with the Boss 429 engine - is now for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $500,000. With a little more than three days left on the auction there are still no bids, but in the grand scheme of things this seems like a relatively fair price for a rare piece of automobile and racing history.
