1970 Ford Bronco: Amazing survivor, Rust Free, 302 V8, Factory build sheet (the original) and a great story.

I am a Ford dealer that restores Broncos and Land Cruisers—I’m constantly on the hunt for either an all original restoration project or a resto-mod project. This Bronco is neither—I purchased it from a gentleman in Jacksonville, Fl., thinking it couldn’t be as nice as it looked in the pictures and would be a good project for me—I was wrong. He purchased it from the grandson of the original owner. I would love to know the full story of the original owner and how he came to own and preserve this 1970 Bronco. I have yet to be able to make contact with the grandson. But this is what I do know. The miles, at 33,648 are original, and that fact is obvious. There is no rust other than minor (very minor) surface rust on under-body components. This is the original color and much of the paint is original paint. This Bronco model had the bench seat (seating 3) and a bulkhead behind the seat (with spare tire and wheel attached) with a full bed behind that. I pulled out the spare for the photos. When I purchased the Bronco, the bed, the interior side-walls and rear inner-fenders were covered with a foam-backed carpet, which I removed, revealing a pristine, un-dented bed. The top appears to have never been removed. From what I was told, the owner was either a professional or amateur gemologist. He used the vehicle to engage in his hobby. I was also told this took place in Montana, Wyoming, or thereabouts. The owner knew how to protect his vehicle from rock and water damage—he strategically placed sheets of metal over the inner fenders, against the frame and anywhere else rocks, salt, etc could get to his precious Bronco. IT WORKED. I have left the metal in place so that the next owner can see it, but it is easily removed with a straight screwdriver. All I had to do to get this Bronco in top shape was to replace leaking axle seals, replace the brake shoes and replace the gas tanks (yes, it does have the dual tank option). The engine runs very well with no smoke, hot or cold. It rides and drives like it did when new. The clutch engages exactly the way it is supposed to and the column shifter is silky smooth. The dash, the seat (original vinyl), inside the glove box, the headliner, the floor mat, under the seat, under the hood---all like a time capsule. The only interior modifications are a small hole drilled in the center of the dash and a grab handle installed beside the glove box. There is an OEM trailer hitch installed on the rear bumper and was probably done so when the owner purchased it new (it uses the factory bumper bolt). If you want a Bronco to restore, don’t buy this one. To restore it would be to ruin it. If you want one to drive, enjoy, show in a car show and get thumbs up from every gray-hair you encounter—buy this Bronco. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at my dealership at 423-639-5151 and leave a message. I will call you back. Or, send your questions or inquiries to Lennie@gatewayfordmazda.com.

The biggest gas-guzzlers of 2024: 'The Meanest List' is the opposite of greenest cars

Thu, Mar 14 2024

In some circles — especially some automotive circles — bigger is better. This explains the Hummer, for example. In its so-called “Meanest List” of a dozen models, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) makes no apologies for berating “the worst-performing mass market automobiles” sold in 2024 in the U.S. The most diminutive car on the list is a Chevy Corvette Z06. At the top of this particular heap is the Mercedes-Benz AMG G63, a gas-powered SUV that the environmental agency says was “the worst-performing vehicle of the more than 1,200 models assessed by Greener Cars and has an annual fuel cost over $4,000.” Not to mention its MSRP of around $184,000. Rank Make & Model Powertrain Green Score MSRP Estimated Annual Fuel Cost* 1 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 Gas 20 $184,000 $4,242 2 Ram 1500 TRX 4x4 Gas 22 $98,335 $3,819 3 Ford F150 Raptor R Gas 24 $79,975 $3,777 4 Cadillac Escalade V Gas 26 $152,295 $3,388 5 Dodge Durango SRT Gas 26 $74,995 $3,332 6 Jeep Wrangler 4dr 4X4 Gas 27 $35,895 $3,260 7 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4x4 Gas 28 $91,945 $3,058 8 Mercedes-Benz G550 Gas 28 $143,000 $3,186 9 GMC Hummer EV SUV EV 29 $98,845 $1,746 10 GMC Sierra Gas 29 $37,700 $3,069 11 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Gas 30 $114,395 $3,169 12 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S680 Gas 30 $234,300 $3,031 *ACEEE analysis using EIA data of the annual cost of driving 15,000 miles In terms of numbers, the dirty dozen of the meanest includes seven SUVs and three trucks. Lonely at the middle of the list is the sole electric, the GMC Hummer EV, which weighs in at 9,000 pounds. The council notes that “though EVs have lower emissions than similarly sized gasoline models, the Hummer demonstrates that size and efficiency, not just fuel source, are important factors in a carÂ’s environmental impact.” ItÂ’s also worth reminding prospective buyers that the average fuel cost of a vehicle on the “Greenest List” eats up only a fifth of the fuel cost of a vehicle on the Meanest List, “showing that greener options can also be more affordable.” The ACEEE also put out a "Greener List" of efficient gasoline and hybrid cars that don't require plugging in.  By the Numbers Green Cadillac Chevrolet Dodge Ford GMC Hummer Jeep Maybach Mercedes-Benz RAM Emissions Fuel Efficiency Green Automakers Truck SUV Electric Hybrid

Subaru Legacy pitted against Roadkill project cars

Fri, 05 Sep 2014

There's an evergreen debate among auto enthusiasts about whether they would prefer to have the latest and greatest car of today or a certified classic from yesteryear. What if you had to further define that, though, and the choice was between a brand new 2015 Subaru Legacy or a turbocharged Datsun 240Z with a hatch that wouldn't close? Roadkill aimed to find out that and more in one of its best videos to date.
According to the hosts, Subaru came to them, handed over some money and challenged Roadkill's project cars against its latest Legacy. The result is every bit as good (or better) than any automotive-themed show you could find on television.
Things start simple with a figure-eight race in a rodeo arena with the Subaru taking on Roadkill's 1968 Ford Ranchero, originally built for ice racing. From there the Legacy races a 1968 Dodge Charger with no windows around and off-road rally stage. Finally, the Subie goes head-to-head against the Rotsun, the aforementioned turbocharged 240Z, through an abandoned neighborhood. Plus, there's a bonus drag race challenging them all.

Motor Trend pits Subaru WRX vs. Ford Focus ST

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

The Ford Focus ST has enjoyed a relatively calm, if brief, reign in the world of hot hatches. With nothing else in the class (in the States, at least) but the aging Mazdaspeed3 and Subaru Impreza WRX and the slow-selling Volkswagen Golf R, the Blue Oval's 252-horsepower five door has been the go-to vehicle for those that don't need the high-octane lunacy (and expense) of the rally bred Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.
Now, though, as the new Subaru WRX (it's not an Impreza anymore, though, neither is it a hatchback...) starts to arrive at dealers, the Focus ST appears to be under threat for the first time. Naturally, Motor Trend is here to figure out which one is the best, with another one of its Head 2 Head videos. Host Jonny Lieberman puts both cars through their paces, going above and beyond, quite literally, at the very end of the video.
