This SUV was originally owned by a retired couple that towed it behind their large RV. They were the ones who had the transmission replaced and painted the top part black with Rustoleum metal flat black and a brush to prevent it from rusting, (which worked btw). I bought it two years ago and have used it for a camping and towing vehicle. It's been very reliable as far as starting in cold mornings, etc. I also used this SUV to learn about carburetors and Ford V6 engines; so there is more than a typical amount of new items and upgrades on this SUV that you normally won't see on something this old, all replaced in the last 12 months. My loss; your gain. I'm moving and this SUV won't fit my moving plans. Time to sell my toy!
What doesn't work:
* Cruise Control doesn't engage at all, it worked perfectly right before I had a shop replace some wiring in the dash a month ago, I assume they screwed something up. It might even be something not plugged in. I haven't checked thoroughly.
* Exhaust Manifold Leak: (i think) creating a light ticking/rattling sound that comes and goes on the passenger side. The new gaskets are only $20 each, but it takes a lot of labor to replace them so I haven't done it.
* Hot Air Diverter: I disconnected the hot air diverter. I don't live where I get snow so I didn't need the carb sucking hot air in all the time to warm up faster. I have all the parts and it passes smog with and without it being connected so there's no problems there.
* Only Driver Seat Installed, I have both rear seats and all the mounting hardware for them including seat belts, I don't have the front passenger seat. The Bronco will come with both rear seats in great working condition! They even fold down and everything. I just don't have them installed to save space and keep them clean.
* A/C, it leaks, but tries to engage when I started to fill it with a leftover refrigerant can I had. It's fully converted to 134a, I don't know how long it will work when completely filled or not. It never bothered me so I didn't work on it (ac parts can get expensive).
* The only dent on the whole thing is on the front passenger corner. The whole quarter panel only costs $50 to replace if you're interested you can get it from rockauto.com. The hood has a small bend where the stand holds it up, you don't even notice it, but the hood is also available for about $100 if you wanted to replace it.
* Electric Choke, it works, I replaced it recently. But the gasket didn't fit so it was loose, right now I have it propped open a little. You would need to adjust this in order to start it in winter or below freezing temps.

MotorWeek remembers pre-EcoBoost Ford with the Thunderbird TurboCoupe
Thu, Feb 26 2015Sometimes it feels great to embrace nostalgia for a trip down memory lane, and MotorWeek indulges that occasional desire with its regular Retro Review series. This time, the long-lived show goes back to the '80s to check out two of the top performance vehicles in the Ford lineup at the time – the 1987 Thunderbird TurboCoupe and Mustang GT. Both models had just received thorough refreshes after several years on the market. Long before an EcoBoost badge ever met its models, Ford made early forays into experimenting with turbocharging on vehicles like the T-Bird TurboCoupe. Based on MotorWeek's assessment, the company was on the right track. The boosted 2.3-liter four-cylinder was apparently a bit coarse but offered 190 horsepower with little turbo lag, compared to 155 hp the year before. The Mustang GT is likely the more-fondly remembered of these performance Fords today and provides an interesting point of comparison against the TurboCoupe. MotorWeek found some faults with the 'Stang, though. While it was quick for the time with a sprint to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, the 'car was described as "a nose-heavy beast" for its handling. And for a look at Ford's future in turbocharging – the GT will have an EcoBoost powerplant – check out our Related Video:
Ford ready to install GE Wattstations at 60 locations in North America
Thu, Mar 20 2014Upper-level Ford executives are sending mixed messages about the power of plug-in vehicles, but in the companies parking lots across North America, at least, the signal is clear: come on and charge your EV. Today, Ford and GE announced that the Blue Oval will be installing Wattstation chargers at its Dearborn HQ and will then add units at more than 60 locations across the US and Canada, including "offices, product development campuses and manufacturing facilities." If you're a Ford employee, then you get four hours of free charging a day. That should be plenty to top off any of the company's plug-in vehicles, even the Focus Electric, and the time limit encourages drivers to swap cars at lunch, because Ford wants to encourage charging station sharing and get more employees to plug in. Ford doesn't mention the DOE's Workplace Charging Challenge by name in the release (available below), but we suspect these Wattstations are part of that project. Ford was one of the founding members, joining the Workplace Charging Challenge on January 31, 2013. On that date, the Ford Motor Company and Ford dealers had over 1,750 charging stations installed on company/dealer property. Ford, GE WattStation Chargers Support Employee Electric Vehicle Charging Network Ford to install its first employee electric vehicle charging station network in Dearborn, Mich.; facilities across the United States and Canada to follow Ford will work with GE as its network provider and supplier of electric vehicle charging stations; networked stations will help Ford understand charging usage and plan for future installations Ford electrified vehicles have logged an estimated 65 million electric miles over the last 18 months. Ford now offers six electrified vehicles, including Focus Electric, C-MAX Energi and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrids, and C-MAX and Fusion hybrid vehicles Ford Motor Company in conjunction with GE, will supply vehicle charging stations at Ford facilities nationwide, beginning with facilities in and around its headquarters. The announcement continues the innovative cooperation begun more than 100 years ago between Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, co-founder of GE. This month, Ford will begin installing GE WattStation™ charging stations across its North American campuses, developing a workplace charging network at nearly every Ford facility in the United States and Canada.
Ford recalls 2020-21 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, 2021 E-Series
Mon, Dec 21 2020Ford announced safety recalls for the 2020-2021 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator along with the 2021 E-Series early Monday. The recalls address entirely different issues. In the case of the 2020-2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, that issue is motor mount hardware. Specifically, the fasteners that secure the passenger-side motor mount may back out. In Ford's words, this can result in a "loss of power," which is the entirely predictable result of an engine parting ways with the vehicle it powers. As alarming as that may sound, owners should not have to worry about anything extreme, as the passenger side mount is only one of multiple, and Ford says it is not aware of any incidents that have occurred with vehicles in customer hands. Ford says it impacts only about 1400 examples of the Explorer and Aviator in the States (plus two in Mexico and 65 in Canada) that were built at Chicago Assembly Plant between July 28 and 30, 2020. Ford is in the process of alerting its owners to the recall, and those with affected models will have their mount hardware replaced by their local Ford dealerships free of charge. The 2021 E-Series is being recalled for a potential heat management issue resulting from improperly aligned thermal insulation on the underside of its engine cover. In vehicles where this insulation was not properly installed so that it reaches all the way to the edges of the cover, the resulting heat bleed can cause high in-cabin surface temperatures, and direct contact them could result in burns. This is the larger of the two recalls, as Ford says it covers nearly 33,000 examples sold in the United States and Canada. Fortunately, as with the above issue, Ford says it has not been made aware of any customer incidents. Ford says the remedy is a set of insulation patches for the exposed areas. Related Video:
