The Purple Plum is a charming Fiat 500 weighing about 1100 pounds.  It seats four (no rear seat belts) and have four gears.  This car is different than many classic Fiat 500s in that it has a 650 engine.  This allows the little guy to achieve speeds of 65 mph (unlike the others which are going to be slower).  It is peppy and fun to drive!  It has 5000 kilometers on the speedometer right now, but obviously it has gone much farther than that.  No body rust!  There are two dents which I need to point out.  The previous owner put these little decorative things on the side of the doors, just in front of the upper hinge.  When the door would open, it would press these things and soon enough they pushed into the surface.  The dents are pretty hard to see.  You've got to be just at the right angle.  If you look closely at the last picture, you'll see it.  Again, very tiny and mostly invisible.  But I want to tell you everything.

Ok, so what works and what doesn't?  Well, the great news is that everything serious works.  The car starts, runs, shifts, stops, and the lights/horn work.  I tightened up the electrics so no flukes there.  New coil, spark plugs, oil.  Windshield wipers work as does the fluid.  Heater works.  The roof opens (very easily) as do the windows--except for the triangular window on the passenger side.  It has a radio/CD player and four speakers which work except sometimes when one hits a bump (which jars the control panel) but usually it will just kick back in.  Otherwise you jiggle it and it plays again.

What doesn't work?
The one triangular window doesn't open.
Both the triangular windows show rust on their lower side (not leaking now).
The oil gauge isn't hooked up.
The fuel gauge does work but it reads full as 3/4 full.

It has a 4 gallon tank and does very well on fuel.  Everyone loves this car!  You will be very popular on the road.  I am selling it with the shop manual for the Fiat 500 and the Fiat 127 (which covers the engine).

The paint is very new and really well done.  People think it is a new car.  They always say, "What kind of car is this?"  Because it looks brand-new.  The wheels are 13" and don't hit the wheel wells.  They are in excellent condition and almost new.

Lamborghini-powered Fiat 500 blows our minds

Mon, 15 Apr 2013

We suppose that it was fate that eventually someone would take a vintage Fiat 500 and wrap it around a 6.2-liter V12 plucked from a Lamborghini Murcielago. Seeing as how both the 500 and the Murcielago hail from Italy, it was only a matter of time before the two got drunk and made either the best or worst decision of their lives depending on who you ask.
Built by Oemmedi Mechanics, the car first bowed at the 2012 Bologna Motor Show, and while the ultra-widebody finished product is barely recognizable as an adorable Cinquecento, there's no mistaking the sound of that wicked V12.
How quick is the thing? Oemmedi isn't saying, but we imagine plopping an engine that dishes out 580 horsepower in a car that tipped the scales at just 1,100 pounds from the factory results in all sorts of abuses on the laws of physics. You can check out a few videos of the creation below.

2014 Fiat 500 1957 Edition takes retro even further

Thu, 21 Nov 2013

It's been 57 years since the "new" Fiat 500 was introduced in 1957, and to celebrate this iconic inspiration for the current 500, Fiat has revealed a new commemorative model at the LA Auto Show. The 2014 Fiat 500 1957 Edition will only be offered in North America, and it goes on sale next spring.
Paying tribute to the "Nouvo Cinquecento," this special-edition Fiat 500 has a throwback styling with its 1957-era wheel design and Fiat logo. The 1957 Edition also comes in a limited color palette consisting of classic hues including light green and baby blue with two-tone white roof and mirrors or a solid all-white paint job.
We think it's pretty cute, and you can judge for yourself after viewing our high-res image gallery above. If you'd like, Fiat's official press release can be found down below.

Wish you had a world-famous auto exec give your commencement speech? Watch this

Sat, 02 Feb 2013

We've seen some pretty great commencement speeches over the years. There was Steve Jobs' incredibly inspiring Stanford address in 2005, John Stewart's insightful speech to the graduating class of William and Mary in 2004 and Steven Colbert's hilarious 2011 address at Northwestern, but automotive executives aren't strangers to honorary degrees. Former General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner spoke at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2011, and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne recently gave the keynote at Walsh College's 100th Commencement Ceremony. The executive knows a thing or two about success and following one's beliefs to fulfillment.
"I constantly encourage my co-workers at Fiat and Chrysler to go beyond the cliche and the conventional to try new approaches and change perspective each and every day," Marchionne said. "I exhort them not to repeat the same things, the same approaches, and I remind them they are indeed free. The freedom I am talking about is something inside you. It is determined by how open minded you remain, how receptive you are to the new and to the different, to the infinite possibilities that present themselves even if you don't go looking for them or could never have imagined. Being free means that you have the strength not to be conditioned by what others want you to do or by what may seem to be the easiest choice."
Amen to that. You can check out the brief press release on the address below as well as a video of a few highlights from the speech.
