Fiat previews production 500X on Melfi assembly line

Tue, 13 May 2014

The Fiat assembly plant in Melfi, Italy, may not be one that appears on our radar that often. It's been in operation since 1993, but until recently only built the Punto - a model that's been around in its current form with few modifications for the better part of a decade, but hasn't warranted the transatlantic voyage to American showrooms. Fiat recently added to the Punto assembly line in Melfi the production of the new Jeep Renegade, but that's not all.
Soon the Renegade (which you can see being built in the background of the image above) will spawn the 500X, a small crossover based on the same platform but with what you can see will be a more rounded shape. Replacing the Sedici (a.k.a. SX4) that was jointly developed with Suzuki, the 500X will join the Cinquecento family alongside the 500 hatch, 500C convertible and 500L minivan, the latter on whose design we hope the 500X will prove a marked improvement.
Expect the 500X (or so it's expected to be called) to be revealed on July 4, which will mark not only the 238th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence but also the 57th anniversary of the original 500's debut.

Fiat to reveal new 500 on July 4

Wed, Jun 10 2015

Fiat has announced that it will reveal a new 500 on July 4 – now just a few weeks away - and just one day after we saw spy shots of the prototypes undergoing testing. The date is not only significant for the American side of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, but for the Italian one as well. In 1957, Fiat rolled out the original Cinquecento in Turin on July 4. Of course a lot has happened since then, and several generations of the 500 have followed. The current model was introduced in 2007, and has since reached over 100 markets around the world with over 1.5 million sold. Since the introduction of the current 500 hatchback, Fiat has rolled out the 500C with an opening roof panel, the 500L for hauling families, and the 500X crossover – to say nothing of the Abarth performance models. As the 500L and 500X aren't directly related to the hatchback, however, they'll likely carry over in their current form after the three-door model is replaced next month. Fiat will be introducing the New 500 on 4 July The countdown to 4 July, the birthday of the iconic 500, has started. It is an important anniversary and this year there will be a great surprise for the millions of fans all over the world who drive it, want it or just admire it. The New 500 is coming and it will be revealed precisely on 4 July, during an unforgettable event. Born in Turin on 4 July 1957, the 500 was revamped in 2007 and since then it has offered the public something new every year. Marketed in more than 100 countries in the world and with more than 1.5 million registered vehicles, the iconic Fiat never ceases to amaze and surprise people with its countless versions and interpretations. FCA reportedly joins the crowd skipping this year's Paris Motor Show

Thu, Jun 14 2018

It's likely FCA vehicles will not be seen at the Paris Motor Show this year. Automotive News is reporting that Fiats, Alfa Romeos, Jeeps and Abarths will not be a part at the show, based on information circulating in the French media. There's a possibility that Maseratis will be displayed at a special section dedicated to upscale cars, but Maserati too will not have a show stand of its own. Ferrari will have a stand, but as it happens, the supercar maker has been a standalone brand since 2015. Skipping the Paris show follows FCA's decision not to take part in the Frankfurt show last year, and the two shows alternate as the biggest autumnal automotive show in Europe. Volkswagen will also not attend the event, and neither will Ford, Nissan or Infiniti. This has become a problem for car shows worldwide, including Detroit's North American International Auto Show. FCA has not released a formal statement about the matter, but a FCA spokesman, quoted by the French magazine L'Argus, reportedly said that the sales and publicity brought in by the show stand would not justify the costs of attending. The news mirrors Volvo's newly announced plan to not take part at the next Geneva Motor Show, but to arrange "bespoke activities" to introduce its cars instead. Related Video:
