Toro Rosso switches back to Ferrari F1 power for 2016

Mon, Dec 7 2015

Scuderia Toro Rosso will run once again under Ferrari power next season. The "other" Italian squad (and second Red Bull team) announced the switch back to Maranello power for 2016, ending its two-year sojourn with Renault, and returning to the engine supplier it used for seven years prior. And with it, the team has also confirmed its driver lineup for next season as well. The 2016 Formula One World Championship will see both Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz return to drive the new Toro Rosso-Ferrari STR11, maintaining the same driver lineup as this past season but under new motivation. Both drivers debuted with the team last season in a complete shakeup of its roster after Jean-Eric Vergne was shown the door and Daniil Kvyat (like Daniel Ricciardo before him) was promoted to the Red Bull Racing team. In ten seasons on the grid, the team has only landed on the podium once, and that was with Sebastian Vettel's dramatic rain-soaked race victory at Monza in 2008. The fourth-place finishes that Verstappen impressively took in Hungary and Austin this year match the team's next-best results to date. Sainz managed to finish in the points in seven out of 19 grands prix this season, including a seventh-place finish in Austin. The team finished the season in seventh place – tying its second best results to date – ahead of Sauber and McLaren, but behind Lotus and Force India. The Austrian parent company bought the team formerly known as Minardi back in 2005, hitting the grid the next season under its current name and Cosworth power. The following season it switched to Ferrari engines before joining its big brother under Renault motivation for the past season. Because of the last-minute engine swap, the team will start the season using Ferrari's 2015 power units. Faenza's switch to Ferrari supply will leave Renault powering only two teams next season: the Lotus outfit that it is now bringing back in house, and Red Bull, which will run the French automaker's engines for at least one more season – albeit branded under the TAG Heuer name. Meanwhile the Prancing Horse marque will power a total of four teams next season, including its own, Toro Rosso, Sauber, and newcomer Haas. Mercedes will power three and Honda just the one. Scuderia Toro Rosso to feature a Ferrari power unit Scuderia Toro Rosso's 2016 challenger, the STR11, will feature a Ferrari power unit. It marks a return to the company that supplied engines to the team from 2007 to 2013.

Ferrari 488 Special Series finally shown in official teaser video

Tue, Feb 13 2018

It's been no secret that a hopped up version of the Ferrari 488 GTB is on the way. The car will follow the trend of previous models like the 458 Speciale and 430 Scuderia by reducing weight, boosting power and re-tuning the suspension and aero. Today, Ferrari itself finally gave us an official teaser on its Facebook page, and it looks like the leaked image from a few weeks back was correct. The timing of the video suggests we'll get the full breakdown in just a few weeks at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. This is just a teaser, so all the video shows is a few very brief cuts and angles of the new car. We've taken a screenshot of the front end, and it's pretty obvious that it's the car we've been following in spy shots for months now. It's blurry, but — as seen in the linked image above — it looks like there are substantial changes to the front bumper. There also appears to be a few small aero tweeks on other places, but again it's difficult to discern. What's obvious is that the blue and white stripes have made another comeback. For a while, the car was being referred to as the 488 GTO. That no longer seems to be the case, though what it will be called is unclear. In the leaked presentation, Ferrari called the car the "New V8 Sport Special Series," though something a little more romantic is likely. Look for a twin-turbo V8 making upwards of 700 horsepower, up from the standard 488 GTB's 660 horsepower rating. Stay tuned for more news in the next few weeks. Related Video:

Ferrari celebrates 70th anniversary on the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach

Mon, Aug 21 2017

Ferrari is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, so it's no surprise that the legendary Italian automaker played a large part in the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this past weekend in the Monterey Peninsula. Four separate classes of Ferraris were featured including Grand Touring, Competition, Major Race Winners, and One-Offs. You can view the photos from the 18th fairway in the gallery above, or scroll down below to read about some of our favorites with descriptions courtesy of the Pebble Beach Concours Car Guide. 1958 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti Spyder Three Ferrari 335 Sport Spyders with V12, 4-liter engines were built in 1957 — and then Luigi Chinetti persuaded Enzo Ferrari to build one more. This Spyder (chassis 0764) was completed by Scaglietti at the end of 1958. It was first presented at the New York Auto Show and was soon nicknamed the "Super Testa Rossa." Alan Connell purchased the car and raced it at Road America, Watkins Glen, Daytona and Nassau in 1959 and 1960. Thereafter it was owned, driven and enjoyed by several different collectors, and in 1990 it was notably lent to Phil Hill to drive in the Mille Miglia Storica. The current owner acquired the Spyder in 2013. 1967 Ferrari 412 P Competizione To replace the successful Ferrari P3, the factory developed the intermediate 412 P race car — also known as the P3/4. Designed by Mauro Forghieri, the 412 P features an aluminum body that owes its shape to the Ferrari wind tunnel, and the car develops 420 bhp due to its 4-liter, V12 engine with six Weber carburetors. This 412 P (chassis 0850) was purchased by the Ecurie Nationale Belge team of Jacques Swaters, and it raced in bright yellow livery at various events in 1967 and 1968. It finished second overall at the 1,000-km Race at Montlhery in 1967, and it won the Cote de Condroz and Cote de la Roche Hill Climbs in 1968. The car was also entered in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona when Ferraris famously finished 1-2-3. After its racing days concluded at the end of 1968, the 412 P was converted to street use for Dean Martin, Jr. and was often seen on roads around Hollywood. It is shown here at Pebble Beach for the first time since being restored to its original racing specification. 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Scaglietta Spyder This Ferrari (chassis 0728) is one of the most famous of all Testa Rossas.
