Detailed item info

Model Overview
The 2010 Ferrari California is a throwback to one of the all-time great Ferraris--the 250 GT California Spyder. But the similarities end there. The new California is the first retractable hardtop the company has ever offered, and the entire package offers owners all the benefits of a nimble grand tourer and a top-down cruiser. As with any Ferrari, the heart of the California is its powerplant. In this case it is a high-revving 4.3-liter V8 mounted in a front-midship design, which places the unit as close to the center of the car as possible and allows for optimum weight distribution. The twin-overhead-cam engine utilizes direct fuel injection for increased efficiency--a Ferrari first, and power is rated at 460 hp and 357 ft-lb of torque. The only transmission offered is a 7-speed, F1-inspired, dual-clutch, fully automated manual with launch control, which is activated by paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. The California's suspension is all aluminum, with double wishbones up front, while the rear is an all-new multi-link design. With all that power and handling, stopping is achieved thanks to carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes.Of course the real standout feature on the California is its top. The fully automatic retractable hardtop takes just 14 seconds to deploy, unfolding neatly from its hidden spot in the trunk. Top up or down, the silhouette of the California is incredibly attractive, a feat difficult to achieve in hardtop convertibles. Plush interiors are a Ferrari hallmark, and to that end, the California employs nothing but the highest-quality materials. Nearly every surface is covered in rich, supple leather, and the driver's seat is nearly infinitely adjustable to provide the ideal driving position. A 6.5-inch intuitive touchscreen displays the infotainment system. A large useable space behind the front seats can be configured to seat two children, or a small bench can be ordered to create easy-access storage. In either configuration, the rear seat-backs fold down to connect the passenger cabin with the trunk. The California's steering wheel is in keeping with the rest of the Ferrari lineup, making use of a wheel-mounted control called the manettino, which allows the driver to adjust the attitude of the various mechanical systems of the car, including engine mapping, traction control and suspension. Standard safety goodies include control for stability and traction with F1 Trac--a system derived from the F1 racing program which uses predictive software to give a delicate and refined control over drive-wheel spin.

Supercar 'Holy Trinity' raced at the track, drag strip, and to 186 mph

Thu, Dec 3 2015

There was a time when we weren't sure if we'd ever get the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder on the track together. Now, we've have a multi-part series dissecting how each supercar approaches all kinds of go-fast tasks. Supercar Driver (SCD) looks at their performances around the track, on the drag strip, and on a runway. SCD didn't get any help from the automakers, it used three cars all owned by one British gentleman, Paul Bailey. The first video has British Touring Car Championship driver Mat Jackson running all three around Silverstone. The second video takes the coupes to Santa Pod Raceway to run the quarter-mile. The third video runs them out to Bruntingthorpe Airfield for a drag race to 300 kilometers per hour (186 mph). We found that latter video especially interesting because SCD shows a graph of how fast each car hit speed marks, and it's interesting to see where the winner made up all of its time and the where the third-place getter lost its time. Nota bene, the McLaren is using its fly-paper sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. You'll find the first video in the series above, the second two videos below. If you still haven't had enough, then check out the Hyper 5 three-part series by Alejandro Solomon filmed at California's Thermal Raceway, starting with the Holy Trinity and adding the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and Pagani Huayra. Chris Harris also did fantastic work around Portimao with the help of Marino Franchitti and Tiff Needell, with assistance from the factories. This content is hosted by a third party. How this Ferrari 250 GTE became Rome's most famous police car

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

We're used to seeing fancy cars gifted to or bought by certain international police forces today, but the story of this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE goes well beyond a gift. Because Rome's anti-organized-crime unit, Squadra Mobile, was doing a terrific job in the early '60s, the Italian president asked what they wanted as a token of appreciation. The answer, meant as a joke, was "A Ferrari." The president, in all seriousness, got them two.
One was almost immediately destroyed during testing, the other remains in the care of Alberto Capelli today, whose father began attending military and government auctions just after World War II. Petrolicious visited Capelli to hear the 51-year-old tale of the most precious cop car you're going to see for a while, and it involves outlaws, a French gangster in a Citroën, a policeman who was offered a spot on the Ferrari factory team by Enzo himself, and more. It's a fantastic yarn, and you can watch the whole story below.

Hennessey twin-turbo Ferrari 458 boasts 738 hp, 0-60 in 2.8 seconds

Wed, 14 Aug 2013

Hennessey Performance Engineering, hot off the heels of its Bugatti Veyron-crushing Venom GT, set its sights on modifying one of the finer Ferrari models. The resulting HPE700 Twin Turbo 458 is a badder, faster 458 Italia with a twin-turbo upgrade that adds 168 horsepower to the already potent 4.5-liter V8. That's 738 hp, which, paired with the extra 134 pound-feet of torque, for a total of 532 lb-ft, is good for a 2.8-second 0-60 run.
Low-inertia ball-bearing turbochargers are used to boost the power, and an air-to-water intercooler makes sure the air surging into the combustion chambers is as cool and dense as possible. Twin wastegates and blow-off valves relieve extra boost pressure and, in addition to a new stainless-steel exhaust system, add some new noises to the 458's soundtrack. The V8 is boosted to a relatively mild 7 psi maximum and maintains 6 psi on its way up to redline. A reflash of the engine control unit brings the package together. HPE is confident enough about its wares that the $59,995 upgrade also comes with a one-year/12,000-mile warranty.
The HPE700 Twin Turbo 458 is set to be unveiled on Friday at the Concorso Italiano located at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch, which is part of California's Monterey Car Week festivities. It also can be viewed on Saturday in the paddock at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the Monterey Historics Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion vintage car races. Check out the press release below for the full details, as well as a video of the Ferrari in action.
