THIS IS WHAT FERRARI HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS AMAZING CAR:

The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano boasts stunning performance with its 6 litre V12, which was developed from the Enzo Ferrari engine, and punches out 612 bhp at 7,600 rpm and combines with an Alcoa all-aluminum chassis and aluminum bodywork for a power to weight ratio of less than 6 lb/hp.
The innovative Delphi SCM Magnetorheological suspension control is just one of the technical features used for the first time on a performance car.  When combined with the F1 Superfast gearbox, the F1-Trac road-holding, safety and stability system, the steering wheel-mounted manettino vehicle dynamics control switch and the advanced down-force and aerodynamic efficiency styling, it truly represents the suitable application of Ferrari racing knowledge and technology to a road-going production GT.

The 599 GTB Fiorano was designed by Pininfarina and is a strikingly sculptural car.  The body’s forms are so supple; in fact, that from every angle you look at it, there is always something new that comes to light.  The car’s lines are a result of lengthy testing in the wind tunnel, with exceptional results in terms of both down-force and drag. A true balance has been struck in the interior between the 599 GTB Fiorano’s sporty vocation and the feeling of intimacy that only skilled hand-crafting and detailed personalization can achieve.

Sumptuous leather trim is tastefully combined with high-tech detailing in carbon-fibre and aluminum for a unique ambience, and there are novel styling cues including a central grip to provide extra purchase for the passenger and new adaptive racing seats featuring carbon-fibre side rests. In addition, this discerning client added some very nice carbon fiber accents usually found only on the 599 GTO.  Considerable attention was also paid to the 599 GTB Fiorano’s packaging.  85 percent of the kerb weight is concentrated between the axles for a low polar moment of inertia and the long wheelbase (nearly 10” longer than the 575M Maranello’s) ensures optimum cockpit space.  There’s also a class-leading boot size that ideally suits the car’s grand touring capabilities.

Ferrari launches 2014 Formula One engine, tests it in a LaFerrari? [w/videos]

Mon, 23 Dec 2013

Ferrari is the last of the three engine manufacturers remaining in Formula One to reveal its 2014 power unit. Called the 059/3, like the Mercedes and Renault units it is a turbocharged, 1.6-liter V6 further boosted by an energy recovery system that is twice as powerful as before. The 2013 KERS was good for 80 horsepower, could power the car for six seconds and reduce a lap time by about 0.3 seconds. For 2014, the energy recovery system puts out 160 hp, powers the car for 30 seconds on full batteries and, according to Ferrari, can shave a massive three seconds per lap.
The car that surrounds this engine doesn't have a name yet - that will be chosen by Ferrari's social media followers in January from a selection of names provided by the Scuderia.
Ferrari didn't provide an audio sample of the power unit at its introduction, but a brief video taken at Fiorano has led folks to believe that the team has been testing the engine in a revised LaFerrari chassis. The clip shows a camouflaged version of the marque's new supercar fitted with a roof intake and sounding nothing at all like a V12 as it takes the hairpin and powers onto the straight.

Conquest and controversy conclude the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona [spoilers]

Sun, 26 Jan 2014

If you don't wish to know who won the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona, you should avert your eyes right now. We'll even give you a double-space to skedaddle...
For those of you still with us, the first race in the United SportsCar Championship (USCC) is done, but the discussions about it certainly won't end for a while. Daytona Prototypes claimed the first four overall places, the top spot taken by the No. 5 Action Express Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP driven by Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi, Sebastien Bourdain and Burt Friselle. The 16th and final caution of the race bunched the field up for an eight-minute sprint to the flag, so the first place getter finished just 1.4 seconds ahead of the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Dallara-Chevrolet Corvette DP driven by Max Angelelli. Third place went to Brian Friselle in the No. 9 Action Express Chevrolet Corvette DP, 20 seconds down. Chevrolet power hasn't taken the overall win since 2003, eleven years later it scores a one-two-three-four. The No. 6 Muscle Milk/Pickett Racing ORECA-Nissan 03 scored fifth place, the top LMP2 finisher.
The Prototype Challenge class win went to the No. 54 CORE Autosport team of Colin Braun, Jon Bennett, Mark Wilkins and James Gue.

Race Recap: Singapore Grand Prix is about a safety car and submission

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

The Singapore Formula One Grand Prix is the Monaco GP of the Orient - a weekend known more for its glamour and time-slot than on-track action, with a temporary circuit that punishes every mistake, usually terminally.
Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas got the best of Free Practice 1, opening the curtain on a possible resurgence of Silver Arrows performance. By the time qualifying was done, though, it was his teammate Nico Rosberg who lined up second on the grid, followed by Romain Grosjean with a beautiful performance in the Lotus, Mark Webber in the Infiniti Red Bull, and Hamilton all the way back in fifth. Behind them were Felipe Massa outqualifying Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button getting the McLaren into eighth, Daniel Ricciardo with another good Q3 effort to get into ninth, and the shocker of Esteban Gutiérrez getting his Sauber into the top ten for the first time this year.
At the front of the pack was Sebastian Vettel. Again. But he was only ahead of Rosberg by a single tenth of a second...
