One of the main differences between this installation and that of the coup? version lies in the location of the engine air intakes. These are no longer on the B-pillars of the car, as was the case with the 458 Italia, but have been moved back to the rear spoiler where the gearbox and clutch radiators are all situated.

The new air intake position also meant that the inlet tracts had to be redesigned to guarantee drivers of the 458 Spider the same driving pleasure delivered by the naturallyaspirated Ferrari V8 with the top down, and a specific mix of intake and exhaust sounds was honed to suit the car’s openair remit. Intake and exhaust inputs were equalised at between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm with calibrations of 3-5 dB, thanks to specifically developed silencers.

The soundtrack that occupants hear in the cabin is particularly exhilarating with the top up too, thanks to work done on the harmonics. By partially lowering the wind stop in this configuration, drivers will find themselves even more enthralled by the sound.

FOR A CAR WITH THESE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS, THE 458 SPIDER IS PARTICULARLY EFFICIENT IN TERMS OF ITS FUEL CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS (275G CO2/KM).

This was achieved through a whole series of modifications, including the introduction of the HELE (High Emotion Low Emissions) System which incorporates key components such as: Stop&Start, which cuts fuel consumption by around 10 percent in urban cycles; a low-pressure fuel pump; Pulse Width Modulation-controlled brushless fans (the brushes are replaced by permanent magnets which completely eliminate friction), resulting in an overall reduction in consumption of around 6 percent; and an electronic variable displacement airconditioning compressor.

GEARBOX

When the gears shift, the opening and closing phases of the two clutches overlap with the result that shifting time is slashed to practically zero with no torque interruption and the smoothness of an automatic transmission: the result is a benchmark for sportiness, performance and comfort.

The 458 Spider’s sporty character is also enhanced by specific attention to the final gear ratio and first and seventh gears. The result is plenty of low-down torque, strong acceleration through the rev range and a seventh that is geared for reaching the car’s maximum speed.

Ferrari threatens to quit F1 over new engine regulations

This past week, the FIA and Liberty Media, the group that currently owns F1, announced a plan to shake up the sport's engine regulations in 2021. The new rules are intended to make things a bit more exciting, though not everyone seems to be on board. Ferrari and FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne fired back, saying that the Italian automaker isn't interested in staying if the regulations stray too far from their current course. According to Bloomberg, Marchionne said that Ferrari will only stay if there is "a set of circumstances, the results of which are beneficial for the maintenance of the brand in the marketplace and for strengthening the unique position of Ferrari." Ferrari occupies a special and unique place in the sport. It's the only team to have competed in the sport since it officially became Formula 1 back in 1950. The team even has certain veto powers not granted to any other team. No other team has more wins or more championships. It could be argued that F1 needs Ferrari more than Ferrari needs F1. If this all sounds familiar, that's because it is. It seems that every time the rules get changed, Ferrari throws up its hands and threatens to walk if things don't go its way. It may sound like whining, but Ferrari has a point. Part of what makes F1 special and different from sports like IndyCar and NASCAR is that each team builds its own cars from the ground up. Ferrari actually agrees with the cost-cutting measures but is opposed to any changes that take away from "powertrain uniqueness." Basically, Ferrari want each engine and hybrid unit to be unique. In the end, Ferrari is more likely than not to stay in F1. The team's bosses will use their weight to sway things in a direction that benefits them because they believe what's good for Ferrari is good for the sport. Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are its most powerful road cars of all time

Ferrari just pulled the wraps off the limited-edition Monza SP1 and SP2, and successfully reminded the world that it still knows how to make a jaw-dropping car. We saw the supercars and learned a few details about them earlier today when someone posted pictures on Instagram from a private Ferrari event. Now we have all the details and official photos from Ferrari. Providing the thrust is the most powerful engine Ferrari has ever built for a road car. It took the 6.5-liter V12 from the 812 Superfast and eked out a few more ponies to get it to 809 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. Ferrari says that's good for a 0-62 run in 2.9 seconds - oh yeah, there's no windshield either. The SP1 is a one-seater and the SP2 is logically a two-seater. They were designed to take us back down Ferrari's memory lane, namely those of the 1940s and 1950s era where the name "barchetta" grew from. In decidedly not-old news, though, both are made of carbon fiber and go over 186 mph. They're light, but not crazily so with the SP1 coming in at 3,307 pounds. The pair are also part of a new segment Ferrari is calling 'Icona,' which, as you may have guessed, translates to Icon. Ferrari thinks it solved the windshield delete issue too. Apparently the fairing ahead of the steering wheel and instrument panel is designed to disrupt part of the airflow when traveling at speed. We'd imagine a helmet might still be the smart option though. Ferrari only plans to build 500 of these cars and hasn't publicly announced a price, but it's safe to assume that they won't be cheap and your chances of snapping one up are slim to none.
